60. An IOU

Translator: Guy Gone Bad

Ling Fan returned home and found that the noodles on the computer desk were left uneaten. He asked in surprise, “Why didn’t you eat the noodles?”

He would eat anything in front of him including moldy steamed buns without hesitation if he hadn’t eaten all day.

He thought the noodles he cooked looked delicious.

Er… Alright, the noodles had stuck together, and the fried egg became cold, and the vegetables had turned yellow… It could be clearly seen that there was a film of oil on the surface of the soup.

“I’ll cook another bowl of noodles for you.” With that, he went straight to the kitchen without waiting for a reply from Chu Xiao.

As for the cold noodles, he heated them up and ate them.

The food in prison tasted worse than that bowl of noodles did, therefore, Ling Fan didn’t think it was a drag to eat.

A few minutes later, a bowl of freshly cooked noodles was put on the computer desk.

Ling Fan noticed that his computer had been moved.

But he was not worried at all. There were some things in his computer that he didn’t want Chu Xiao to see. He was confident of his power-on password.

At that time, he was reminded to set the password. He entered a string of numbers at random. He himself was surprised when he saw his password…

Before Ling Fan could open his mouth, Chu Xiao, who was leaning on the headboard with an unhappy face, spoke first.

“What’s your computer password?”

“Er, why do you ask me this question?”

“Is there something conspiratorial in your computer?”

Ling Fan hummed and hawed, “Er, to some extent, yes.”

The embarrassment on his face was likely to mislead people. After all, as an adolescent boy who lived alone and had a computer, people would naturally think the reason he felt embarrassed was because there were blues movies in his computer.

Obviously, Chu Xiao was no exception.

He said impatiently, “Give me your cell phone.”

“Oh.” This time Ling Fan didn’t turn Chu Xiao down. He handed his cell phone to Chu Xiao without hesitation.

Chu Xiao took the cell phone from Ling Fan and expertly input a phone number and then a line of numbers and letters which looked like error codes.

The phone number belonged to Chen Feng. No one knew the number, except for him and Chen Feng. That string of numbers and letters was a kind of code words known only by him and his subordinate.

24 hours had passed, but Chen Feng hadn’t found him yet. This showed that those kidnappers had cleaned up the scene and destroyed all the clues.

He had to let Chen Feng know his situation as soon as possible.

So he said in his message, “I’m all right. You guys don’t need to look for me. All you have to do is ensure the smooth running of the company.”

He had thought that the drug would lose efficacy in 24 hours. But to his surprise, as time went by his arms and legs were still weak. He couldn’t move without the support of chairs or desks or something else.

Chu Xiao had no idea how long the drug’s effect would last.

But he knew it would do him no good if he returned to the company in this condition.

A common saying goes, “Kill your enemy when he is sick.”

If he returned to the company in that condition, those who hated him very much would show up and try to stir up trouble; some greedy shareholders of Chu Group and some managers of underground casinos would be tempted to extort money from him…

So, he could do nothing but wait until the drug passed out of his system.

Chu Xiao was confident that his subordinates would soon find him.

Lin Tianchen was a computer genius. It would only take him several minutes to decode a signal. So, Chu Xiao firmly believed that they would soon determine his position after receiving his message.

What he didn’t know was that Ling Fan’s cell phone had been specially adapted, although it was a cheap knockoff in appearance.

In order to prevent himself from being found, he had applied for a cell phone number in the name of his missing father and adapted the cell phone.

Ling Fan didn’t think Lin Tianchen could trace the divergent signal source, which had been cut off long ago, and find out where Chu Xiao was, although he was a computer expert.

Ling Fan took his cell phone back from Chu Xiao and glanced at the screen. Chu Xiao had deleted the text message he had sent to Chen Feng. Ling Fan raised eyebrows.

He didn’t mind what Chu Xiao had done. Although he didn’t know what that string of numbers and letters meant, he guessed that Chu Xiao had sent a message to his subordinates and told them he was all right.

As for his current location…

Even Chu Xiao himself didn’t know exactly where he was.

After all, Ling Fan’s apartment was hard to find. Couriers often mistook the apartment.

Ling Fan shrugged his shoulders and put the cell phone back in his pocket. Then he shoved that bowl of noodles under Chu Xiao’s nose and said, “I learned from a biology book that without food and water a person can only live for three days. You haven’t eaten for a day, right? I’ll be troubled if you starve to death in my apartment. What’s more, a funeral will cost a lot of money. We’re neither relatives nor friends…”

Chu Xiao had never in his entire life hear such nonsense. His face clouded over, and he couldn’t help roaring, “Shut up!”

‘Are children nowadays as stupid as he is? If my gun hadn’t been taken away by those kidnappers, I would have shot him down. He’s so noisy. Starve to death? As the Underground Emperor of N City, I won’t allow myself to die in such a stupid way. But…’ Chu Xiao thought to himself.

Although he was angry, he struggled to his feet and came up to the computer desk. He looked down at that bowl of noodles.

There were noodles, some vegetables and a fried egg in the bowl, which looked exactly like that one this morning.

Chu Xiao frowned and asked unhappily, “Can’t you cook anything else?”

The truth was that the bowl of noodles reminded him of something he was angry at.

Chu Xiao replied in a solemn tone, “There are no other ingredients in my refrigerator. I can fry another egg for you if you want.” He silently turned his back to Chu Xiao so that Chu Xiao couldn’t see the smile on his face.

Obviously, it was almost hard for him to restrain himself from laughing out loud.

He was not lying. There were no other ingredients in his refrigerator. He ate noodles every day and didn’t think there was anything wrong. He hadn’t had meals regularly in his previous life due to external causes. The noodles were sumptuous enough for him.

He failed to consider the eating habits of Chu Xiao. He guessed that Chu Xiao used to eat noodles with shark fin soup…

H knew Chu Xiao was very rich.

But anyway, he didn’t expect that Chu Xiao, who hadn’t eaten for a day, was still so picky.

In fact, Ling Fan was wrong. Chu Xiao had stayed in the room all day staring blankly at that bowl of cold noodles. Now he just didn’t want to see noodles.

Ling Fan saw a look of determination on Chu Xiao’s face. He finally gave in.

“Alright, there are restaurants nearby. I’ll order takeout for you.” With that, Ling Fan took a stack of take-away menus out of a drawer. Those take-away menus had only been used by Lei Wu and Lei Lei.

He handed the menus to Chu Xiao and then quickly closed the drawer. He even locked it seemingly for fear that Chu Xiao would see what was inside.

“This one, this one, and this on.” Chu Xiao casually ordered dishes.

He behaved as if he was willing to eat anything but noodles cooked by Ling Fan.

Chu Xiao frowned and said impatiently, “Why are you still standing there like a statue? Give me your cell phone if you don’t know how to order takeout.”

“I’ll do the job. But I think you should give me money first.” Ling Fan said leisurely.

He put on a serious look and began to calculate the total cost of the takeout.

“18 yuan. 34 yuan. 16 yuan. The delivery fee is 5 yuan. Mm, 73 yuan in total.”

“You…”

“What’s wrong?” Ling Fan was well aware that Chu Xiao had no money with him now, because he had had his men rob Chu Xiao of all his belongings. In other words, he asked for money on purpose.

He found it interesting to tease Chu Xiao, and the look of embarrassment on Chu Xiao’s face gave him a sense of achievement.

Chu Xiao remained silent for half a minute before he said with a poker face, “I have no money on me.”

‘Damn it! I’m never short of money, but now I have to admit that I have no money, just for a takeout. What a shame!’ he thought to himself.

Ling Fan threw his hands open and said helplessly, “If so, you can only eat the noodles. I’m just a poor student. 73 yuan is enough for me to eat for three days. As for that bowl of noodles, excluding the labour cost, the price of ingredients is…”

“Shut up!”

Chu Xiao’s words successfully stopped Ling Fan from complaining of being hard up. An air of awkward silence permeated the room.

Ling Fan gave a little cough and said, “How about giving me an IOU? Then I’ll offer you whatever you want to eat.”

Hearing this, a murderous look flashed through Chu Xiao’s eyes. Ling Fan could see the anger and a strong desire to shed his blood in Chu Xiao’s eyes.

He was used to Chu Xiao’s bad temper.

“What do you think? You have to eat the noodles if you refuse.”

“Shut your mouth and give me a pen and paper, ” said Chu Xiao in a cold voice.

“Okay.”

Ling Fan walked out of the room. After a while, he came back.

“Here you are. Write an IOU when you want something.” Ling Fan gave Chu Xiao a notebook.

Chu Xiao took it from Ling Fan’s hand. He gripped it until his knuckles whitened, although he was still weak.

He signed his name on the IOU and threw it to Ling Fan. Then he gritted his teeth and asked, “Can you order takeout for me now?”

He had never owed money to anyone or written an IOU. He had always been a creditor. What was more, 73 yuan was not a patch on the value of his signature.

Chu Xiao thought of Ling Fan as a shallow guy and decided to teach him a lesson when he recovered.

Ling Fan put away the IOU and ordered the takeout for Chu Xiao. This time he didn’t do anything to tickle Chu Xiao.

……

Ling Fan dished out the takeout food onto the dining table and then went to the bedroom again.

“Let’s go to the dinning room.”

“Okay.” This time Chu Xiao didn’t turn Ling Fan down.

Chu Xiao’s face clouded over again when he saw Ling Fan sit down in the chair opposite. He had no intention of sharing his meal with Ling Fan.

“This is my dinner, not yours.”

“Er, alright, suit yourself.” Ling Fan didn’t mind Chu Xiao’s cold attitude. He went to the bedroom and after a short while, he came back with that bowl of noodles. It was his midnight snack.

Ling Fan glanced at the clock on the wall and frowned. “Have you finished eating?” he asked.

Chu Xiao cast a cold look at Ling Fan and answered him with another question, “Does it have anything to do with you?”

“Yep. I have to do the dishes.” In fact, the point was that it was almost twelve o’clock.

Chu Xiao wanted to say something, but his face suddenly changed because a chill stole over his body.

He felt just the same as last night.

“Damn it…” Chu Xiao cursed. He stood up and staggered towards the bedroom.

“Do you need any help?”

“No, just leave me alone.”

He slammed the door with a bang.

Soon afterward there came groans and gasps from the bedroom.

This was the second time…

Ling Fan drew a mark on a calendar.
