Chapter 23 The Conduct of a Gentleman
Yun Jin felt increasingly uneasy. The old man didn't seem to have any ill intentions; he just wanted to drive her out of the house.
The reason why he would guard this courtyard for Liu Sanlaizi is strange no matter how you look at it.
Yun Jin observed carefully and indeed noticed something was wrong. She suddenly sheathed her sword, stepped back, and shouted, "Stop!"
The old man stopped what he was doing, tightened his grip on the fire poker, and stared intently at her.
Yun Jin examined his complexion and tentatively asked, "Are you poisoned?"
A hint of surprise flashed in the old man's eyes, but he didn't say anything.
"Although the poison you've been given prevents you from speaking, it doesn't affect your hearing," Yun Jin said tentatively, staring at him. "May I try? I've studied medicine and poisons with my master since I was a child; perhaps I can cure you."
The old man stared into her eyes, and seeing that she didn't seem to be lying, he threw the fire poker in his hand away.
Yun Jin took two steps forward, took the old man's hand with her left hand, and placed her right hand on his pulse. While taking his pulse, she searched her memory for similar symptoms. After a moment, she put the old man's hand down, frowned, and looked at him:
"This isn't poison, it's a Gu. If I'm not mistaken, it should be the Whispering Gu. The Gu worm lurks in your throat, and any movement causes excruciating pain. If you hadn't taken the Ice Soul Powder, your meridians would probably be completely destroyed by now."
The old man listened to his explanation with great conviction and looked at her expectantly.
Yun Jin smiled and said, "I happen to be able to solve it."
As she spoke, she led the old man out of the dark room, had him sit down at the table, took off the bundle on her back, and took out blood powder, borneol, cinnabar, cicada molting, and golden thread lotus, pouring them into a small bowl. She then took out another small bowl, and from the bundle, she took out a water bag, poured some water into the small bowl, and stirred the powder well.
To avoid attracting attention, she always carried a bundle on her back. As for how she managed to carry so many things, she didn't want to explain; she just said they were taken out of the bundle.
She then took out a small bottle of honey, dripped a drop of honey into the bowl, mixed the powder into a large pill, placed it on the table, and said to the old man, "Just open your mouth and look at the pill."
The old man, half-believing and half-doubting, leaned on the table and opened his mouth to look at the pill.
In a short while, the old man felt a sharp itch in his throat and coughed twice involuntarily. Sure enough, a tiny red worm, as thin as a hair, crawled out of his mouth, landed on the table, and wriggled a little.
Yun Jin reacted quickly, scattering a handful of grayish-brown powder. The small insects instantly curled up into a ball, twitched twice, and then remained still.
The old man clutched his throat, his eyes first widening in shock, then overjoyed. He tried to open his mouth; though his throat was still tight, the usual excruciating pain was gone.
"I...I can..." His voice was hoarse, as if it had been sanded, but he actually managed to utter a few words.
"Don't rush," Yun Jin poured him a glass of water. "You just forced out the Gu worms, so your throat needs some rest. Let's moisten it first."
The old man took the water cup and gulped down most of it. His throat felt much better immediately. He put down the cup and was about to get up to bow when Yun Jin stopped him.
Yun Jin tidied up the medicinal powder on the table, shook her head and sighed, "The person who put the poison on you probably didn't intend to let you live."
Upon hearing Yun Jin's words, the old man's face darkened, his lips forming a cold, hard line, his voice hoarse yet filled with deep-seated hatred: "I know who it is..."
As he said this, his gaze drifted towards the night outside the window, clearly not referring to Liu Sanlaizi.
Yun Jin's heart skipped a beat, but she didn't press the matter. Everyone has their own secrets, and she didn't need to dig into them.
"Even if it wasn't Liu Sanlaizi," Yun Jin said calmly, tidying up the medicine powder on the table, "he wasn't a good person either. How could you willingly guard this house full of stolen goods for him?"
The old man opened his mouth as if to say something, but in the end he only sighed. He did indeed have his own unavoidable difficulties.
Seeing his silence, Yun Jin pointed towards the dark room and laughed, "To be honest, I'm here today to 'rob and plunder.' Are you still going to stop me?"
The old man looked up at her. Moonlight shone through the cracks in the window, illuminating her veiled face. Only her clear eyes were visible, honest and without a trace of impurity.
He shook his head and said, word by word, "These things never belonged to him. They're yours now. I'm leaving. Until we meet again."
After saying that, a 75% favorability rating appeared above his head, and he got up to leave.
"What is your name, sir?" Yun Jin asked hurriedly. She had saved someone, so she needed to know who they were; she wasn't some ungrateful fool who didn't expect anything in return.
Although she knew the old man's name was Chai Wu, the old man didn't know, and she couldn't very well tell him, "Your name is floating above your head..."
The old man paused, then turned his back to her and said, "Everyone calls me Chai Wu."
Before he finished speaking, his figure had already disappeared outside the door.
Yun Jin raised an eyebrow as she looked at the empty doorway.
This Chai Wu doesn't look like an ordinary old man; who knows, he might actually come in handy someday.
Without thinking further, she turned and went into the dark room. Using a tinderbox, she quickly stored more than a dozen wooden boxes into her spatial storage. When the boxes landed, the space flickered, but Yun Jin did not notice.
After packing her things, she closed the hidden door, turned around, left the house, and climbed over the wall to escape.
When they returned to the Liu residence, the backyard was quiet, with only the chirping of insects and the night breeze.
She went straight to the room in the front yard where Huang Weixue was locked up. Pushing open the door, she saw Huang Weixue leaning against the wall. Hearing the noise, he looked up sharply, his eyes filled with anxiety: "Xiaobai, you're finally back! Why were you gone for so long? Did something happen?"
He still had bruises on his face from being hit, and when he spoke, he pulled at the wound at the corner of his mouth, making him gasp in pain, but he still stared intently at Yun Jin.
Yun Jin said calmly, "Don't worry, he won't die. I've already dealt with Liu Sanlaizi. We'll stay at the Liu residence tonight."
She stepped forward and helped Huang Weixue up. "I'll find you a clean room to rest in."
Supported by her, Huang Weixue staggered out, muttering, "Where's that girl? Did you find her? And... did Liu Sanlaizi hurt you?"
"Why so many questions?" Yun Jin rolled her eyes at him. "He's in the main courtyard, doing just fine. As for Liu Sanlaizi, he's too busy taking care of himself to bother with me."
As soon as the two reached the main courtyard gate, the girl ran out of the house. Seeing Huang Weixue limping, she quickly stepped forward to help, but then felt a little embarrassed: "Young master, thank you for today... I'm the one who dragged you into this."
"It's none of your business." Huang Weixue waved his hand, his tone sincere. "It is the act of a gentleman to help those in need."
"A gentleman's conduct?" Yun Jin scoffed, helping Huang Weixue towards the servants' quarters. "I've heard the saying, 'A gentleman doesn't stand under a crumbling wall.' You're too weak to even kill a chicken, what kind of hero are you trying to be? If I hadn't arrived in time, that Liu fellow would have already tied you up and thrown you into the river to feed the fish!"
