Service Department: Chapter Forty-Five Experiment
"Are you going home so late?"
Seeing Rio Futaba walk into the school without turning her head, Chen Yi quickly called out to stop her.
“I don’t have the equipment at home to preserve this special sample,” she explained.
"Huh? Are there any at the school?" Chen Yi followed and asked.
Although Zongwu High School is considered a key high school, it probably doesn't have the standard laboratory equipment.
"Actually, I do have one. My parents asked someone to bring it to me. It's in my own science classroom." Futaba's statement was incredibly extravagant.
"It's so late now, how are you going to get home?" Chen Yi glanced at the sky, where only a sliver of sunset remained in the west. Looking east, the deep blue sky was like a curtain covering half the sky.
"If it's too much trouble, I won't go back. The lock on my lab door is pretty secure," Rio Futaba said calmly.
The sturdy lock could only stop the fake man a couple of times at most. Chen Yi glanced at the almost deserted school interior and his eye twitched.
Does the school not want to hire anyone to ensure the safety of the school at night? Why hasn't it arranged even a basic night shift security? Or is it that it's not yet time for the night shift to start?
"Why are you following me?" Rio Futaba walked deeper into the school, looking at Chen Yi who was still closely following her, and pushed up her glasses in confusion.
"Do you usually spend the night at school?" Chen Yi didn't answer her question directly.
"No, home is more comfortable than school. Today is a special case." She waved the empty bag in her hand, then thought for a moment.
"It's good that you come along. I can't observe the traits and such, so I need your help to observe the data."
Is that so... Chen Yi dismissed the idea of granting the other party 'spiritual vision' as well. This way is fine too; it ensures the other party's safety and allows him to know information about evil spirits immediately.
"Let me see... cryogenic storage? Oh no, I didn't prepare the pre-freezing tubes... Oh well, let's just do the preliminary experiment."
Rio Futaba opened the bag, then looked troubled.
"Take out a small piece." Rio Futaba handed the bag to Chen Yi.
"..." The sealed bag was opened, and a foul stench instantly wafted out, causing Chen Yi's expression to twist slightly.
My nose, which had finally recovered, is suffering again.
"The smell is very strong... but I can't smell it?" Futaba Rio watched Chen Yi's performance and scribbled notes on her sketchpad.
"Here." Chen Yi knew the basic steps of the experiment. He took a small amount from the sealed bag with test paper and made a temporary slide according to the slide preparation procedure.
"Not bad." Shuangye nodded and praised Chen Yi for his skillful one-handed operation.
"Interested in joining the Quantum Mechanics Research Club?" Perhaps this guy would be surprisingly useful as an assistant? Rio Futaba thought.
"I'm sorry, President, I've already joined the school's Pseudo-Human Hunting Club," Chen Yi casually flattered.
"I see..." Futaba recalled, "Does the school have this club... I think so."
"Futaba, under the microscope we can only see that it has some similarities to human biological tissues." Chen Yi spread his hands and looked around Futaba's science classroom.
This isn't a biological laboratory, so what can they possibly measure here?
“Okay then… Hello, Mom, I’m sorry to bother you, but I have a sample here…” Shuangye hesitated for a moment, then took out her phone and decisively made a call.
"Okay, we'll wait at the school gate. Please come as soon as possible." Shuangye gave a brief report, then hung up the phone and tidied up the mess in the classroom.
"So how do we preserve this sample? With liquid nitrogen?" Chen Yi scratched his head and placed the sealed bag on the table.
“Idiot, liquid nitrogen will destroy molecular structure... Go get the thermos from the windowsill.” Rio Futaba sighed and made a decision immediately.
"Here," Chen Yi handed it over. Shuangye took the thermos, took two ice cubes from the refrigerator in the science classroom, smashed them, and swept them into the thermos.
"Sample." She reached out her hand, and Chen Yi handed her the sealed bag.
"Just for short-term storage, I'll make do with it." Rio Futaba muttered to herself as she handed the thermos to Chen Yi.
She thought to herself, "I don't need this thermos anymore, I'll just buy a new one."
"Let's go to the school gate. My mother has already sent an assistant to pick us up." Shuangye tidied up the lab table briefly and called to Chen Yi.
"Now?" Chen Yi checked the time. "Wouldn't it be dangerous to wait there?" He looked out the window; there was no light left, the sky was completely dark, and had turned a deep navy blue.
Now is the time for human intervention; every second spent outdoors reduces the risk of being outdoors.
“She has professional biological equipment over there, which can measure more specific results… Um, I don’t think I’ve mentioned it yet… We will offer a reasonable price to buy this sample…” Futaba was halfway through her introduction when she realized that there might be some risks for the boy in front of her to obtain this sample, so she bit her lip and added.
“I didn’t say I wouldn’t go. If I didn’t want you to know, I wouldn’t have agreed to meet you at the school gate. I’m just worried that the distance from here to the school gate might be dangerous, and there would also be some danger while waiting at the school gate. How about we wait until your mother’s people arrive before we go out?” Chen Yi didn’t care about the ownership of the sample; he only cared about the nature of the ’evil spirit’ so that he could take safer measures in the days to come.
"I see." Rio Futaba calmed down and pulled out a chair to sit down.
'Klukay, can you go through the door and explore the outside environment?' Chen Yi asked in his mind.
"Commander, it seems not. I'm not quite sure what the situation is." Kroos appeared, walked to the classroom door, pushed it open, and shook her head at Chen Yi.
"How about we discuss the nature of this evil spirit first?" Rio Futaba thought for a moment; going out now was indeed a bit dangerous.
"I'll speak my mind." Chen Yi's shoulders were a little tired, so he had no choice but to temporarily take off the guitar bag from his back.
......
"It is highly likely a variant of a pseudo-human, and possesses the ability to be subjectively invisible... subjectively invisible..."
"So, it means it's objectively visible? We clearly saw it but thought we didn't?" Rio Futaba felt she had deduced the truth.
No wonder these pseudo-human variants have never been recorded by the Japanese authorities... Given their physical dissipation rate after death and their invisibility that never fails, finding their traces is indeed quite difficult.
"Chen, can people who can't see them use methods like thermal imaging or sonar to detect them?"
"I think it should be possible."
"In other words, although we can't observe the existence of the entire individual, the objective records of scientific instruments won't be false, right?" Rio Futaba pushed up her glasses, a glint of light flashing by.
"As expected, that's how it is," Chen Yi affirmed.
"It's good news." A slight smile appeared on her lips.
"That's really good news. It means I don't have to learn how to use a gene sequencer and gene analyzer from scratch," Chen Yi thought to himself.
Service Department: Chapter 46 Leaving School
"What is this...?" Rio Futaba was startled when Chen Yi pulled the assault rifle out of his guitar case and instinctively took a few steps back.
"Is it strange? I can't exactly fight the evil spirits hand-to-hand to get the specimen, can I?" Chen Yi slowly screwed the silencer onto the muzzle, then took out several other accessories from his guitar case, attached them to the gun, and tested whether they could work properly.
"Which way did your mother's assistant come from?" Chen Yi asked casually, stroking the metal gun barrel as he looked down.
“Over there in Makuhari,” Rio Futaba replied, cautiously leaning closer and watching with interest as Chen Yi inspected the firearms.
There was a faint smell of gun oil, which showed that the gun had been carefully maintained.
It wasn't very far, about a ten-minute walk. Chen Yi looked out the window and saw a car parked at the school gate.
"We're here, let's go down." Chen Yi slung the gun sling over his shoulder, put his guitar bag back on, and said to Futaba Rio.
"Let's go then."
Pushing open the door, Chen Yi stared into the quiet corridor, which resembled a gaping maw of an abyss waiting for its prey to walk into its trap.
"Click." Futaba turned off the lights in the science classroom, plunging the entire corridor into complete darkness.
Tactical flashlights and lasers turned on simultaneously, illuminating the corridor once again.
"Stay close, don't get lost," Chen Yi reminded Futaba Rio.
......
The school was so quiet you could hear a pin drop; Chen Yi could even hear his own breathing and heartbeat.
Neither of them spoke; they simply walked calmly and quickly through the corridor on that floor.
Something was wrong; Chen Yi inexplicably felt a stabbing pain in his temples.
"Klukka, go ahead and scout ahead." Chen Yi called Klukka, who was covering the rear, to the front, while pointing his gun at the stairs on one side.
Is there an ambush?
"Why did it stop?" Rio Futaba asked, puzzled.
"I have a bad feeling, I hope it's just my imagination," Chen Yi said dismissively, with no intention of moving forward.
"Commander, the corridor is safe. Remember to check the classrooms on both sides." Kroos returned from the front and gestured to the closed doors on both sides.
"...Get through quickly." Chen Yi gripped the gun tightly with both hands, his old wounds throbbing slightly.
The two quickened their pace and soon arrived at the stairs.
Just then, footsteps came from below the stairs.
"...Classmates? Why are you still at school so late?" The person who came upstairs was the night shift security guard from Zongwu High School. He looked like he was on patrol. He was an older man with a big beard and a pistol at his waist. When he saw Chen Yi pointing the gun straight at him, he was so scared that he immediately raised his hand.
"Are you human?" Chen Yi asked.
"I also want to know if you're human..." the old security guard muttered, obediently raising his hand.
“Why we’re on campus isn’t important. We’ll leave now. But to avoid unnecessary suspicion, it’s best if we keep a certain distance from each other,” Chen Yi shouted to the security guard on the mezzanine floor.
"This little brat... I'll listen to you." The security guard spat, drew his gun from his waist, and slowly moved downstairs.
"I'll pretend you two don't exist. Go back now!" he shouted, his voice fading into the distance, as if he had run away.
"Chen, I think that security guard is acting strange." Rio Futaba, who had been silent until now, spoke up at this moment.
"Hmm?" Chen Yi turned around. "Is something wrong?"
“Since he’s a security guard, there’s no reason he wouldn’t know that we went into the school in the evening, right? Unless he never went back to the security booth, or he’s not a security guard at all.” Shuangye’s analysis was quite logical.
“But he has a gun on him,” Chen Yi retorted after a moment’s thought.
"Has a gun? What does having a gun prove?"
“Futaba should know about a completely disguised pseudo-human subspecies, right?” Chen Yi changed the subject. “I’ve encountered attacks from completely disguised pseudo-humans before. If you don’t have a certain level of social interaction with them, you can’t even tell they’re disguised. They have a perfect grasp of human cunning.” He explained in detail.
"However, when that dummy attacked me, it used a dagger, not a firearm."
"It had previously killed a police officer and then posed as a patrolman from the Anomalous Threats Security Division to pick us up. At that time, the officer's equipment was not taken by the other party. In other words, it was not carrying a gun at the time."
"Why would you rather use a knife than a gun? Don't you think this might be a key point in identifying a fake person?" Chen Yi stated his reasoning.
"...I once read an article that seemed to say that pseudo-humans' genes are allergic to gunshot residue, so they really can't use firearms. Your reasoning has some merit." Futaba crossed her arms, deep in thought, and after a while gave an affirmative answer.
"Commander, that security guard is at the corner downstairs with a gun pointed at the stairwell," Kroos said to Chen Yi as she returned from downstairs.
"The plan has changed. We'll go down the other staircase," Chen Yi said, turning back to Futaba Rio.
"Why?" Shuangye was bewildered by Chen Yi's sudden change of heart.
“We have judged from our knowledge and experience that the other party may not be a fake, but we don’t know if the other party also thinks that we are not fake,” Chen Yi explained.
"A chain of suspicion? You mean... that security guard might be downstairs holding a gun to us?"
"Yes, so going down the stairs on the other side is the safest option."
Chen Yi nodded.
......
Leaving Kroos downstairs to keep an eye on the security guards, Chen Yi and Rio Futaba once again crossed the corridor. Just then, an accident occurred.
Rapid footsteps echoed from the bottom of the stairs at the corner, like the sound of a spider's legs touching the ground.
"We're under attack!" Chen Yi roared, shoving the stunned Futaba Rio, and quickly opened fire on the dummy figures that rushed out.
The guy moved extremely quickly, leaving a deep, bone-revealing wound on Chen Yi's arm.
Despite the excruciating pain, Chen Yi kept pulling the trigger, smashing the fake man's head to pieces.
Several fake humans emerged from under the stairs, roaring at Chen Yi and his companion.
"Don't just stand there, run!" Chen Yi grabbed Futaba Rio and quickly ran back. The chances of survival against that security guard were much higher than against this large group of fake people.
"Um...that security guard..." Futaba doesn't exercise often, and this short sprint had already left her breathless, and her clothes were in disarray.
"I'll handle it." Chen Yi led the way, and after arriving on the first floor, he quickly flashed in the direction of the security guard's line of sight.
“Uncle, we are human! The fake humans are behind us!” he shouted.
"Join the glorious evolution!" But the security guard did not respond as he expected, and unexpectedly opened fire.
