Unusual Fate Records
Chapter 13. The Third Dawn
Chapter 13.013. The Third Dawn
"Doctor, it's time to evacuate."
The researchers who opened the lab door were wearing heavy, cold-resistant protective suits, and their muffled voices came from the bottom of their masks.
The leading doctor stared intently at the unconscious girl. The petri dish had just run dry, with only various tubes supporting her body to prevent her from falling.
"Collect samples first!" The man waved his hand, indicating that he didn't care about his own safety at all.
Everyone was wearing heavy protective suits, and the air was chilly. The man in his thin white coat stood out from the crowd.
"Team leader, the patient's rate of alienation has slowed down, and some of the alienated cells have even begun to show signs of reversion!" The woman in front of him rapidly tapped on the buttons, constantly adjusting the various data.
"Her consciousness is resisting cellular mutation. How much time can that buy us?" The doctor's eyes remained unchanged, but his speech quickened, and his emotions had vanished from his face.
"Team leader! The main power switch for the ice storage has been compromised! Backup power has been activated!" The researcher who rushed in, leaning against the glass door, shouted breathlessly.
All the researchers on site suddenly froze, alarms blared, and they could almost hear a jumble of chaotic footsteps.
The scalpels, tweezers, test tube racks, and other implements rattled and clanged, making it difficult to sit still.
The red alarm lights and the intermittently appearing shadowless lamps, along with the swirling icy fog, blurred the bewildered faces beneath the heavy protective suits.
"What's the panic!" The man didn't turn around, an excited glint flashing behind his glasses. This chilling situation made his thoughts incredibly fast, like a dense cluster of chips overloaded, countless currents coursing through his mind. All the experimental subjects, all the experimental phenomena, all the experimental reactions flashed through his mind.
"I understand, I understand, the key to the whole experiment!" the man suddenly roared, bursting into unrestrained laughter.
"Hahahaha! I won! I've finally figured out the key breakthrough in this experiment!"
"Team leader..." The female assistant beside her heard the increasingly urgent flute music and felt the red light shining on the man's face, making his ferocious smile even more blood-red.
He abruptly pointed at the petri dish, his white coat making a swishing sound: "Will to live! Will to live! Something is making her resist while simultaneously wanting to survive!"
"Team leader!" The female assistant's voice was already trembling with sobs beneath her mask.
"Quiet down!" the man snapped irritably. "Let me finish! Spread the word! Whether this experiment succeeds or not is no longer important! The real breakthrough is the third form where humans and White Walkers coexist!"
"Humans and White Walkers are two different species, but 'fate' has become the bond between them. The 'fate' of the test subjects is the most suitable bridge so far. The alien cells are too domineering and will devour the cells of all living things. That's why we thought of reducing their activity to try to make other cells assimilate with them, while retaining cells that can proliferate indefinitely and undergo secondary assimilation. The finished product we obtained is our ultimate goal."
"What if we don't limit ourselves to the cellular level? If the cells of any species could gain controllable, unlimited differentiation and regeneration capabilities, it would be a qualitative leap in the physiological structure of the race!"
"This will be a new kind of human! A new kind of human who will no longer suffer from illness, will have a much lower chance of becoming disabled, and will have a significantly longer lifespan!" He ignored the white mist coming out of his mouth and stared excitedly at everyone present. "And we will go down in history! The milestone of modern scientific bioengineering will be erected at this moment!"
"Team leader...we have to evacuate..." The female assistant couldn't hear the man's shouts at all. The red light flashing and alarming were going off. She was only focused on how to escape.
"You're all very curious about the final result, aren't you?" The man's eyes revealed a strange smile. "It's 'fate.' As you know, people in this world have many strange and unusual abilities, some obvious, some subtle and unassuming."
He gazed at the sleeping girl in the incubation chamber, raised his hand to touch her face in the air, and murmured, "She possesses a certain ability to tame White Walker cells—enough to help her suppress the alienation process when invaded by alien cells. But in fact, her somatic cells already have the rudiments of assimilation with alien cells, which is the closest thing to the theoretically emerging human!"
"What a beautiful woman... but at the crucial moment she resisted?" The man's voice was filled with rage, his fist clenched in the air as he roared, "Something must have happened that changed her mind, changed her will! Investigate! Just look at the people she's been in contact with recently and what she's been through. You'll find them! The culprit who ruined the whole experiment!"
He spoke faster and faster, and no one dared to interrupt him, but this did not affect the inspiration that was bursting forth from the man.
“There is no such thing as unearned courage. Before this, she had undergone three separate collections of mutated hematopoietic stem cells. A person who has been weak for many years only has reckless courage when they mistakenly believe they have received a favor. The event that changed her choice and her destiny was the key to turning the experiment around!”
Gas hissed and leaked from the exhaust pipes, and the white laboratory emitted a reddish light, as eerie as a morgue.
Following the doctor's gaze, everyone looked at the experimental subject. The girl in the incubation chamber was deathly pale. Her smooth arms had even more prominent purple veins. The cold air seeped into her body, turning her lips blue.
The doctor looked around at his assistants, who were frozen in fear, and said, "What's the panic? Research is the most dangerous battlefield! A slight mistake and you'll miss the truth."
"Besides," he said with a mocking tone, "the assassin hasn't even made a move, so what are you afraid of?"
He glanced into the crowd and saw a person wearing heavy protective clothing; the transparent mask revealed a face with increasingly cold eyes.
Suddenly, all the researchers felt as if they had lost their protective suits, and a chill ran down their spines and straight to their heads.
Like a startled rabbit, the woman's scream came from inside her protective suit, and she pushed away those around her as if she were fleeing; the men were in a panic, their heavy protective suits knocking over equipment, pipes and all, and with a clanging and clattering sound, a bunch of instruments were torn down.
"It's really not easy to sabotage the power supply, lure away most of the people, and sneak in wearing protective suits."
The man stepped forward, relaxed and self-satisfied. His white coat fluttered gently in the chilling air from the crackling ice crystals, from which the refrigerant gas was constantly leaking out.
"But it seems you didn't do enough preparation. I saw through you almost the moment you walked in, but I was just too lazy to call you out on it." The man squinted, adjusted his glasses, and a white mist clouded the lenses before quickly dissipating.
Everyone here calls me team leader.
"Only you call me Doctor."
Today is another day spent staying at home. The influence of the pronouncements in Book One on people is rarely explicitly stated, but they do have a certain degree of control over the characters' behavior.
