Chapter 159, Section 029: Mother and Daughter (Seeking First Subscription)

The moonlight shone down, casting a cold glow over the several figures.

"That's not right either." Jin Ziyue asked in a deep voice, "If Qingzi's birth mother didn't die, then who entered Qingzi's dreams before?"

Sui Mei smiled faintly and said, "It's me. When I'm asleep, I always feel like my consciousness is leaving my body, and I involuntarily drift towards that child."

The phrase "living in a dream" blurs the line between life and death for women.

It's not hard to guess that Jin Ziyue learned about her whereabouts by chance from Sada Haruko.

"You were the one who killed Koji Sawada?"

"Really? I can't remember." She touched her forehead and said faintly.

Jin Ziyue probably also felt that he couldn't get any more information out of this woman; she was more like a tool.

“Then I have no further questions.” Jin Ziyue slowly raised his knife. “You are already dead. Go back to where you belong. At least don’t let your daughter know about your crimes.”

Sui Mei smiled, her face pale and sickly: "You can't kill me."

The blade of light swept across, and the woman offered no resistance; her head instantly turned to ashes.

However, within the phantom image, Homi's figure remained unchanged, like a semi-transparent body, while the scattered ashes slowly condensed and reassembled into Homi's appearance.

"And—" the woman's gaze softened, "Haruko already knows."

Jin Ziyue's eyes flashed with a fierce light.

"The reason I didn't intervene just now," Homi said, her face not showing many wrinkles, looking like a glamorous woman, "is because... I went to see Haruko."

……

Going back an hour ago.

When Haruko Sada opened her eyes, she was already immersed in her own dream memories.

"Damn it, when was that?" She felt a little lost. She could only remember arguing with Jin Ziyue a moment ago, but then she drifted off to sleep.

"Despicable scoundrel! Stingy! Scoundrel!"

She was a little anxious, but there was nothing she could do. After a while, she sighed and looked at the space with frustration. Normally, if she didn't bring the token, the memory palace used for meeting in the dream wouldn't be triggered. It was probably the man outside who had also brought her stepfather's belongings with him.

Perhaps there are also her mother's belongings.

She thought that reuniting them through a dream would be a small way for her to make amends to her stepfather.

Not long after, a gaunt-faced man appeared before her. Sawada Koji was somewhat dazed; his memory was stuck on the scene before his death. Who would have thought that in the midst of his confusion, he would have the chance to see her daughter again.

Haruko Sada was somewhat embarrassed, lowering her head and losing her usual arrogance: "Well... it might be a bit difficult to explain, but you've already passed away."

"Hmm." The man wasn't too saddened; seeing the little girl here was only a fleeting surprise.

"Um... I didn't know before that the contract of indenture was signed by my father, so I blamed you for it..."

Koji Sawada's heart tightened: "You knew?"

“Hmm.” Haruko Sada lowered her eyelids. “I met a benefactor who helped me get rid of all my burdens, but it just happened to affect you.”

Koji Sawada suddenly understood why that woman had appeared in his house at the last moment of his life: "I see."

He reached out and scratched Haruko Sada's hair, saying, "It's good that you're safe."

Haruko Sada suddenly raised her head: "I want to know who killed you? Believe me, that guy has the ability to take revenge."

Thinking of Jin Ziyue, her expression darkened, a mixture of faint sorrow and barely perceptible pride.

Upon hearing her words, Koji Sawada's expression stiffened, and he said, "I don't know, it seems to be a monster, but I can't remember clearly."

"Any distinguishing features?" Haruko asked yesterday.

"I don't know! Haruko, I appreciate your kindness, but please don't go near those monsters, it's too dangerous!"

The man gave a solemn warning.

“But I’m not fighting alone now!” she cried.

She regretted it as soon as she finished speaking, as it seemed that Jin Ziyue also disagreed with her getting involved in these monster incidents.

"Listen to your uncle, Haruko! I promised your mother I would never let you get hurt again!" Koji Sawada grabbed Haruko's shoulders and gazed at her intently. "I was worried that you wouldn't be able to adapt to this world, but now that someone has helped you get rid of your debts, my greatest wish is for you to grow up happily."

"Mmm." Haruko Sada felt a long-lost warmth from this man who was not good with words. She lowered her head slightly and rested her head on his shoulder.

"Uncle, I think I might have fallen for that man who's so nice to me. What should I do?" she whispered.

Koji Sawada was taken aback.

However, he let it go and patted Haruko on the back yesterday: "Haruko has grown up. If there's anything you like, just bravely go after it."

“But he wants to kick me out…” the girl’s voice trembled slightly. “I really wish I could serve him hot meals every day when he gets off work, and live peacefully with him like a virtuous wife.”

Koji Sawada looked at the girl in his arms with a complicated expression, as if he had traveled through time and space to see another gentle person leaning on his shoulder and crying softly.

I remember back then, the woman named Sui Mei couldn't bear the pressure from her family either, and in a moment of emotional breakdown, she leaned on my shoulder.

Koji Sawada remembers saying this at the time:

"Love and giving are never equal, but even if it means eternal damnation, it's better than being consumed by unrequited love."

This is the only kind of romance that a man who frequents Kabukicho all his life understands.

Haruko Sada wiped away her tears and forced a smile: "What? I don't understand at all."

She seemed to remember something and said, "Oh right, I still have my mother's belongings with me. With my abilities, I can meet my mother here tonight."

Upon hearing this, Koji Sawada was struck dumb, his face turning deathly pale: "What did you say?"

Yesterday, Haruko thought her stepfather was just too happy, so she repeated, "I said, we can see Mom!"

Unexpectedly, upon hearing this, Koji Sawada became restless.

"Haruko, get out of here right now!"

The girl asked, puzzled, "Why?"

"Run! Get out of here now!"

Haruko Sada noticed that the other person was becoming increasingly agitated and asked, "Why? Is there something you're hiding from me?"

The memory palace trembled and buzzed. Scenes of the girl holding takoyaki and showing her white teeth, and of her family clinking and clattering as they scooped rice at the dinner table, gradually turned yellow, blurred, burned and wrinkled, and crumbled into a pile of black ash.

"Haruko, Haruko." The woman's voice came from all directions of the Hall of Memories.

“Mom!” Haruko Sada exclaimed with delight.

Koji Sawada was terrified.

In the chaos, the woman's face slowly appeared, her figure and outline gradually becoming solid. The woman was in her thirties, in the prime of her youth.

The woman gazed at her daughter and smiled gently.
