Chapter 2842
Chapter 2842
If the old lady asked Vera to treat the wounded, she could still refuse, after all, she was just a head nurse, not a military doctor. She was an expert in taking care of patients, but if she was asked to treat the wounded, she would be unable to do it.
Upon learning that the old lady's daughter-in-law was having difficulty giving birth and needed her help, Vera quickly cast an inquiring look at Sokov, wanting to see what the other party thought.
Sokov learned that the old lady came to the town hospital to see a doctor in order to save her daughter-in-law who was having a difficult birth, and he wanted to help her. Seeing Vera looking at him inquiringly, he did not immediately agree, but looked at her and asked, "Comrade head nurse, can you help me?"
"Of course, Comrade Commander." Vera nodded and said in a positive tone: "For me, this is not a difficult task."
Since Vera said she could help, Sokov nodded and asked, "Did you find the medicine at the pharmacy?" Perhaps worried that Vera would misunderstand his meaning, he added, "Anyway, it's a difficult delivery operation, and it's inevitable that some surgical instruments and medicines will be used."
"We are lucky." Vera showed a relaxed expression on her face: "We found some surgical instruments and a small amount of medicine in the pharmacy. It shouldn't be a big problem to deal with a difficult delivery operation."
"Then let's set off."
After Sokov asked everyone to leave the town hospital, he did not sit in the passenger seat, but climbed into the back car and sat with the soldiers. He gave his seat to the old lady so that she could give directions to the driver.
After more than half an hour of bumpy ride, the truck, under the guidance of the old lady, drove into an inconspicuous little village and stopped at the door of a wooden house in the north of the village.
An old man was standing at the door. When he saw a military vehicle driving towards his house, his face was full of surprise.
When he saw the old lady getting out of the car, he immediately stepped forward and asked, "Old lady, where is the doctor you found? My wife is in so much pain that she doesn't have the strength to scream."
"All the doctors in town are gone," the old lady said. "Luckily I met a nurse who said she could help our daughter-in-law deliver the baby."
After Vera got out of the car, she heard the screams coming from the house and quickly asked the old lady, "Is that your daughter-in-law in the house?"
"Yes, she is my daughter-in-law."
"Take me in quickly. If we delay too long, something dangerous might happen." Vera stared at the old man as she dragged the old lady into the house and said, "Old man, go and boil some hot water. It will come in handy later."
The old man agreed, ran quickly to the kitchen on the side and started boiling water.
Sokov knew that giving birth would take a long time. For safety reasons, he first ordered people to set up guards around the place, then walked into the kitchen, sat down next to the old man, and asked politely, "Old man, where is your son?"
Hearing Sokov's question, the old man looked at Sokov with a vigilant look but said nothing.
When Sokov saw the old man like this, he couldn't help but wonder if there was something wrong with his son that was why he didn't dare to answer his questions?
Thinking of this, he organized his words in his mind and continued, "Old man, my troops are stationed not far from here. I just want to ask, is it possible that your son is in my troops?"
"That's impossible." The old man suddenly raised his voice after hearing what Sokov said: "He's dead. He died last month."
"Did he die on the battlefield?"
"Yes." The old man's expression dimmed. "The postman brought a death notice saying that all the members of his unit were killed."
Sokov was speechless for a moment, not knowing what to say to comfort the old man who had lost his son.
Just as he stood up and prepared to leave the kitchen, the old man said behind him: "There is a wooden house at the east end of the village. There are two apple trees planted at the door. There is a wounded man living inside."
"There's a wounded man at the east end of the village?" Sokov stopped and turned to ask the old man, "Is anyone taking care of him?"
"He fled here last week." The old man said to himself, "A kind-hearted person in the village took him in and let him recover at home. Unfortunately, when he went out to the fields to look for food two days ago, he was shot dead by the Germans who suddenly appeared. Now the wounded man is left alone in the house, and it is not clear whether he is still alive."
Upon learning that there was a wounded soldier lying in a wooden house at the east end of the village waiting to die, Sokov could no longer remain calm. He quickly called Zub and Chulsin and rushed to the east end of the village to see if the wounded soldier was still alive.
Arriving at the east end of the village, Sokov quickly found the wooden house with two apple trees at the door. He walked quickly to the door and pushed it open with force.
The room was dark and he couldn't see anything, but Sokov smelled blood and herbs, which meant the wounded were in the room.
"Is anyone in the house?" Sokov shouted into the house. "Is anyone in the house?"
After shouting several times, I finally heard a weak voice coming from the corner of the room: "I'm here!"
Sokov hurriedly followed the sound and soon came to a wooden bed. He had adapted to the light in the room and saw clearly that there was a wounded man lying on the bed, with bandages wrapped around his head and shoulders. It seemed that his injuries were serious.
Sokov leaned over to the wounded man and said, "I am Major Sokov, commander of the infantry brigade. Comrade, which unit are you from?"
The wounded man lying on the bed suddenly became a little excited when he heard Sokov's words: "I... I... I am..."
Sokov was worried that he would die suddenly because of being too excited, so he comforted him and said, "Don't be anxious, talk slowly."
The wounded soldier took a few deep breaths and said in a tearful voice: "Comrade Major, don't you recognize me? I am Romanov!"
When Sokov heard the name said by the wounded man, he couldn't help but shudder all over, thinking, could it be the Romanlov he had always been thinking about?
He quickly turned around and shouted to Zub and Chulxin who were standing behind him, "Come over here and see if you know this wounded man."
Chulxin came over first, carefully examined the wounded man on the bed, and exclaimed: "Comrade Brigade Commander, isn't this Romanov? How come he is here?"
Zub also took a closer look and agreed, "Yes, it is Romanov. Comrade Brigade Commander, we cannot leave him here alone. We should take him back to the brigade immediately and let the military doctor treat him."
Even if Zub didn't say this, Sokov planned to take Romanov back. You know, if this person hadn't been framed and had some problems in the 1980s, the person sitting in the highest position would not be Gottu but him. If he died during the Great Patriotic War, it would definitely have a bad impact on future history, so Sokov planned to take him back to the field hospital of the infantry brigade and let Jenna, the assistant military doctor, treat his injuries.
"Chursin, Zub," Sokov ordered them, "Find something to carry Comrade Romanov to the north of the village."
Zub agreed and was about to go forward to carry the person, but was stopped by Churxin: "Wait a moment, Comrade Sergeant." "Why wait a moment?" Zub asked puzzled.
"It's too far from here to the north of the village. I'm afraid it's a bit too much for the two of us to carry him like this." Chu Erxin said, "I'll go back and find the driver and ask him to drive the car to the door so that we can carry him directly into the car."
"That's a good idea." Sokov nodded and said to Chulhin, "Comrade Chulhin, please go back and find the driver and ask him to drive the car to the door. And find two more soldiers to help lift Romanov into the car."
Chulsin agreed and ran outside. Sokov held Romanov's hand and comforted him, "Romanov, don't worry, I will send you to the field hospital for treatment as soon as possible."
"Thank you, Comrade Major," Romanov asked in a weak voice, "Can you give me something to eat? I haven't eaten for several days."
Hearing Romanlov say this, Sokov immediately remembered the old man who had just said that the villagers who took care of Romanlov had been beaten to death by the Germans who appeared nearby. No one had taken care of Romanlov these days. If he had not appeared here, he might have died of hunger and thirst in two days.
"Sergeant Zub," Sokov turned to Zub and asked, "Do you have any food?"
"Only half a loaf of bread."
"Hurry up and give it to Romanov." When Sokov saw Zub take out half a piece of bread wrapped in paper from his backpack, he reminded him: "He has been hungry for two days and his stomach is weak. Don't feed him too much at once, otherwise his life may be in danger."
"I understand." Zub agreed, broke off a small piece of bread in his hand and stuffed it into Romanov's mouth. Seeing that he was having difficulty chewing, he took off the kettle on his back, unscrewed the lid, put his left hand through Romanov's neck, gently lifted him up, and then put the kettle close to his mouth.
But Romanov took only one sip before he started coughing violently, which scared Sokov. He was worried that his coughing would rupture the wound on his body. He quickly asked with concern: "Romanov, are you okay?"
Romanov coughed and waved his hands. "I'm fine, Comrade Major. I didn't realize there was wine in the kettle and I choked on it."
"Sergeant Zub, what's going on?" Sokov asked Zub with a stern face, "Why is there wine in your canteen?"
Hearing Sokov's words, Zub chuckled a few times and then defended himself, "Comrade Brigade Commander, the weather is cold, so I put all the vodka distributed by my superiors into the kettle. When I feel too cold, I drink a few sips to warm myself up."
"Okay, put away your wine bottle." Sokov said to Zub, "Romanlov is injured, so he can't drink casually."
After Romanov lay down again, Sokov asked curiously: "Romanov, how did you get here?"
Hearing Sokov's question, Romanov struggled to sit up, but was stopped by Sokov: "Just lie down and answer."
"Comrade Major," Romanov looked at Sokov and said with tears in his eyes, "After we were dispersed, I followed a group of defeated soldiers to retreat northward. After walking on the road for more than ten days, we arrived in Smolensk Oblast and were incorporated into a combat group. But facing the crazy attack of the German army, we could not stop it at all and had to retreat again. Not long after, my unit was trapped by the Germans in the Vyazma area..."
Romanov had not eaten for two days and was very weak. He spoke in a weak tone and Sokov had to work very hard to hear what he said.
Before Romanov could explain how he got here, the sound of a car was heard at the door. Zub hurried to the door to check, then turned to Sokov and said, "Comrade Brigade Commander, the truck is coming."
Soon, Chulsin came in with two soldiers.
"Carry Romanov onto the truck," Sokov instructed the men, "be careful not to hurt him again."
"Don't worry, Comrade Brigade Commander." Chulxin said confidently, "I have more experience in how to carry the wounded onto the truck."
A few minutes later, Romanov was put into the bed of a truck.
"Comrade Brigade Commander," the driver asked when he saw Sokov sitting in the co-pilot seat, "Where are we going next? Should we go back to the brigade directly, or wait until the head nurse is done and then return to the brigade?"
Sokov thought for a moment, then told the other party, "Drive the car to the cabin where the head nurse is delivering the baby. I have a few words to say."
The driver agreed, started the car, and drove towards the wooden house in the north of the village.
When the car arrived in front of the wooden house, Sokov got out of the car and called all the soldiers to him. He said to them, "There is a seriously injured person in the car who needs to be sent back for treatment immediately. The two of you stay and protect the head nurse. The rest of you follow me back to the troops first."
"Comrade Brigade Commander," a soldier who was called out asked cautiously, "When will we return to the troops?"
"Don't worry." Sokov glanced at the cabin and replied, "After we send the wounded back to the brigade's field hospital, we will send someone to pick you up. You must ensure the head nurse's safety before she returns to the troop station. Do you understand?"
"Understood." The two soldiers answered in unison.
In this way, except for two soldiers who stayed outside the cabin to protect Vera, the rest of the soldiers drove back to the field hospital of the brigade headquarters.
When the truck arrived near the tent of the field hospital, Sokov opened the door and jumped out, shouting to the tent not far away: "There are wounded people here, come out and take them."
Jenna, who was in the tent, heard Sokov's shout and immediately came out of the tent and asked curiously, "Comrade Brigade Commander, where did the wounded come from?"
"We encountered it accidentally when we were rescuing people outside."
Jenna turned around and instructed the stretcher bearers who had just been assigned: "What are you still standing there for? Hurry up and carry the injured down."
After Romanov was carried off the truck by stretcher bearers, Jenna immediately went forward to check his injuries.
Sokov, who was worried, asked anxiously, "Comrade Assistant Military Doctor, how is his injury? Is he okay?"
"The bandages on his body are so dirty. How long has it been since they were changed?" Jenna said unhappily after a simple inspection: "Some of the wounds have festered. If he is not treated in time, he may be in danger of death. Stretcher bearer," she said to the stretcher bearer, "Hurry up and carry him into the tent. I need to perform surgery on him as soon as possible."
