Chapter 3166

After exchanging a few more words with Sokov, Zhukov picked up the phone on the table, put the receiver to his ear, and said, "Have Major Rex come in."

After hanging up the phone, Zhukov said to Sokov, "I've assigned you an adjutant to assist you with your daily work."

He had barely finished speaking when the door opened, and a middle-aged major, led by a colonel, walked in from outside.

The colonel reported to Zhukov, "Comrade Marshal, Major Rex has arrived!"

"Thank you, Comrade Colonel." Zhukov nodded to the colonel and continued, "You may leave now."

After the colonel left, Zhukov pointed to the major and said, "Misha, this is Major Rex, the adjutant I assigned to you."

After a brief pause, Zhukov said to Major Rex, "Comrade Major, this is General Sokov, the deputy commander of the military district. From now on, you will be his adjutant and assist him in all his work. Understand?"

"Understood, Comrade Marshal!" Rex replied, then turned to face Sokov, raised his hand in salute, and said respectfully, "Hello, Comrade Deputy Commander, I am your adjutant, Major Rex. I obey your orders and await your instructions!"

"At ease, Comrade Major!" Sokov returned the salute and politely asked Rex, "Could you take me to my office?"

“Of course, of course,” Rex replied. “I would be more than happy to do it for you!”

Sokov led Rex out of Zhukov's office and called Gulia, who had been waiting outside.

When the three of them entered the corridor, Gulia stared warily at Rex, who had just asked her about Sokov's identity, and asked Sokov, "Comrade General, who is he?"

Sokov was unaware of what had just happened in the office outside. Upon hearing Gulia's question, he introduced her, saying, "Gulia, let me introduce you. This is Major Rex, Marshal Zhukov's adjutant, who will assist me in carrying out various tasks."

“Major Rex, this is Lieutenant Gulia,” Sokov continued, “she’s been assigned to my bodyguard position by my superiors, and you’ll be dealing with her quite a bit in the future.”

“Hello, Lieutenant Gulia.” Rex extended his hand to Gulia first, smiling broadly, and said, “I never imagined we’d have the opportunity to become colleagues.”

Gulia grasped Rex's outstretched hand and said apologetically, "I'm sorry, Major Rex, my attitude was a bit off just now. Please don't mind."

From their conversation, Sokov realized that the two might have met before, so he tentatively asked, "So, you two know each other?"

“I don’t know him,” Rex said, shaking his head. “We’ve never met before, at least not until today.”

"Then what about your conversation?" Sokov asked, puzzled.

“Let me explain, Commander,” Rex said, looking at Sokov. “I just arrived at work today when I received a call from the Marshal’s adjutant, the colonel you just met, saying he was going to assign me as the new deputy commander’s adjutant and told me to come here and wait.” Rex continued, “When I saw you and Lieutenant Gulia, I guessed that I was supposed to serve you, so while you were meeting the Marshal, I tried to inquire about your identity from Lieutenant Gulia, but I was met with a cold shoulder.”

Gulia blushed and hurriedly explained, "I'm sorry, Major, I didn't know your identity at the time. As the general's personal bodyguard, I couldn't reveal his identity to anyone without his permission." "Understood, understood!" Rex nodded vigorously, acknowledging Gulia's explanation, and then said to Sokov, "Deputy Commander, if you don't object, I'll take you to your office now. Is that alright?"

"Can."

Led by Rex, Sokov arrived at the door of the office on the third floor.

Rex unlocked the door with his key, then pushed it open and gestured for Sokov to come in: "Please come in, Comrade Deputy Commander. This is your office."

Sokov stepped into the office and found that it was quite spacious, though not as large as Zhukov's office, it was at least forty square meters.

The office was simply furnished, with only a desk, two single sofas, and a few chairs.

Rex walked to the right wall, opened a closed wooden door, and introduced it to Sokov: "Comrade Deputy Commander, this is the rest room, with a separate toilet. You can rest in there if you get tired from work."

Sokov walked to the door, peeked inside, and then asked, "By the way, where were you and Gulia while I was working?"

“My office and Lieutenant Gulia’s office are right next door,” Rex said, pointing to a bell on the table. “If you need anything, just press that bell and I’ll be right there.”

Sokov nodded in satisfaction, walked behind his desk, sat down in the large leather chair, and then looked at Rex and asked, "Major, do you know Deputy Commander Lukin's phone number?"

“Of course I know.” Rex walked over to Sokov and pushed a small hardcover notebook on the table toward him: “It contains the phone numbers of the main leaders of the military region. You can find out who you want to call here.”

Sokov opened the notebook and found it filled with phone numbers. The first was Zhukov, the second was Lukin, and the rest were people he didn't know.

He closed the notebook, nodded his thanks to Rex, and then said, "Major Rex, there's nothing else here. You and Gulia can go next door to rest. If I need anything, I'll ring the bell for you."

But Rex remained rooted to the spot and tentatively asked, "Comrade Deputy Commander, I'd like to ask you, has Marshal Zhukov assigned you any tasks?"

Rex's words reminded Sokov of the first task Zhukov had given him: to receive Lunev, who would arrive in Odessa that afternoon.

"Major, thank goodness you reminded me in time, otherwise I would have almost forgotten," Sokov said apologetically. "The task assigned to me by the Marshal was to receive General Lunev, who is visiting Odessa this afternoon. He is the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs."

Hearing Sokov's words, Rex's expression became serious. He looked at Sokov and asked tentatively, "Comrade Deputy Commander, I wonder when General Lunev will arrive in Odessa this afternoon, where we should pick him up, and where we should take him after we pick him up?"

Rex's barrage of questions left Sokov bewildered. He scratched the back of his head and said awkwardly, "I only know that Lunev will arrive this afternoon. I really don't know what mode of transportation he will use or when he will arrive in Odessa. Maybe I should call Marshal Zhukov right now and ask him."

As he spoke, Sokov reached for the phone, preparing to call Zhukov.

“Comrade Deputy Commander, there’s no need for that.” Rex raised his hand to stop Sokov. “I’ll go ask the relevant departments and report back to you once I have the results.”
