Chapter 1270 What's wrong with these guys?
Huang Jiacai sat in his large executive chair, fiddling with an unlit cigar, his mind racing with the intelligence he had just acquired—a detailed report on the current situation of Dr. Walker, the chief scientist of BG Group.
Intelligence reports say he was depressed, secluded, and unusually prone to outbursts of rage in the lab... These fragments piece together the image of a genius scientist on the verge of collapse.
“Walker…” Huang Jiacai murmured the name.
He admired Dr. Walker's talent; Walker was one of the few scientists within the BG Group who was not only proficient in technology but also capable of thinking strategically.
Yet this very scientist, a leader in his field, is now gripped by profound self-doubt due to the overwhelming superiority of his cognitive abilities and the loss of his dignity. This, however, is a strategic advantage for Sanbo and the Breakthrough Alliance.
But Huang Jiacai saw more than just an opportunity to weaken his opponent; he saw a deeper strategic plan.
Dr. Walker has become exactly what Huang Jiacai wanted; it can be said that everything is under his control.
A few days later, an ordinary international flight landed in Zurich. A middle-aged man with an Asian face walked out of the airport with the flow of people. He was dressed plainly, like a business traveler or a scholar. In a corner of an inconspicuous café in Zurich's old town, he met Walker, who looked haggard and had a wary look in his eyes.
“Dr. Walker, it’s an honor to meet you.” The man said in fluent English in a low voice, without shaking hands, but simply pushing a seemingly ordinary USB drive across the table. “A friend asked me to pass on a message to you, as well as some information that you may find interesting.”
Walker's fingers trembled slightly; he didn't immediately touch the USB drive. "Who? Professor Yang Ping?"
The man smiled slightly, neither confirming nor denying: "He admires your talent, and he believes that the boundaries of science should not be confined by commercial barriers and narrow competition. Your current environment may not be fertile ground for your full intellectual potential." He paused, observing the struggle on Walker's face, and continued, "He asked me to tell you that serving a fortress that tries to lock away the future is a loss for scientists worldwide. If you feel lost about the future, we always welcome colleagues who are truly dedicated to exploring the frontiers of science."
Walker fell silent, his inner turmoil evident.
Yang Ping's achievements stood before him like a towering mountain, filling him with both frustration and longing. The oppressive atmosphere within BG and Karl Muller's arrogance had already exhausted him. At this moment, this invitation from the opposing camp, tinged with a sense of "mutual respect," was like a ray of light illuminating his despairing heart. He didn't accept on the spot, nor did he show much enthusiasm, but he also didn't vehemently refuse.
"What's in here?" Walker was cautious and didn't reach out to take it.
The man smiled and said, "Don't worry, it's not anything shady inside. It's detailed information about Professor Yang's X-2 enhancer technology. It will help you resolve all the doubts you're facing now."
Dr. Walker's eyes were filled with longing. For a scientist, nothing is more important than unraveling the doubts in his heart. Regarding X-2, the information only told him the operating procedure, but not the underlying principles. This was a painful torment for him. He had to figure out the "why".
"Why are you giving me these? This is during your war with the BG Alliance. You have no reason to do this." Walker was clear-headed, and he still didn't reach out.
The man smiled slightly again: "Professor Yang said that this kind of technology that is beneficial to human health should not be patented, but should be shared by the whole world. He only applied for a global patent to protect the technology in order to prevent BG from stealing it and monopolizing it. Even if he applies for a patent, he will make it available to the world for free."
"Moreover, Professor Yang said that Dr. Walker is a top expert in this field. Although there is an iron curtain between him and you, he firmly believes that the spirit of science can penetrate the iron curtain. He is giving you these things only for pure academic exchange, hoping to get some advice from Dr. Walker."
Dr. Walker's eyes were filled with disbelief: "That's all? You don't need me to provide anything for you, like BG's security technology? In exchange?"
The man shook his head: "No, no, no! You may have misunderstood. We didn't mean that. We just came to deliver technical materials to you. Professor Yang and you are just having a purely academic exchange, without any commercial motives. You and he are both scientists, and scientists should not get involved in the war between businessmen."
"Alright, I should go now. Thank you for coming out to see me. You can do whatever you want with this USB drive. If you find it helpful, take it. Don't worry, we don't have any conditions attached. If you don't want it, just throw it into the Rhine."
The man finished his coffee, got up, and left. Dr. Walker stared at the USB drive for several minutes before finally reaching out and taking it.
……
The atmosphere was somber in Karl Müller's office at BG's European headquarters.
On Carl's large desk lay a stack of photographs, which clearly showed the scene of Walker meeting the Asian man in a corner of the coffee shop.
“It happened just three days ago. The other party was very cautious and used an untraceable disposable communication device to arrange the location. Our intelligence personnel only had time to take these photos.”
Karl Müller's voice was devoid of any emotion.
"Although the specific content of the conversation could not be confirmed, Dr. Walker's behavior in the following days showed that he was extremely emotionally volatile and repeatedly accessed our database alone late at night."
As Karl Muller stared at the photograph and spoke, a vein throbbed slightly on his forehead.
He was inherently suspicious, especially after the repeated setbacks in replicating the X-2 project and the fruitless internal investigation; he saw everyone as a potential traitor. He was aware of Walker's recent instability, initially attributing it solely to the pressure of project failure. But now, everything seemed to be connected.
Why couldn't the large BG team crack the technology developed by the small team of six people?
Why does the opponent seem to be able to predict their every move and launch extremely precise counterattacks?
Why was Walker pessimistic from the beginning about fully replicating X-2 technology?
Details he had previously overlooked now became crystal clear through the lens of suspicion.
“Walker…” Carl spat out the name through gritted teeth, his voice filled with the fury of betrayal, “Mr. Rikoyan and I trusted him so much, gave him the best resources and the highest authority, and he actually…”
“Mr. Carl,” Gan Fengyi spoke up at the opportune moment, her voice steady. “Is there some misunderstanding? Are you sure this person is Dr. Walker?”
“Absolutely true!” Carl said.
After a moment's thought, Gan Fengyi said, "If it is confirmed that it is him, although we lack direct evidence that Dr. Walker leaked core technology, from a risk management perspective, we cannot take any risks. A single secret contact is enough to constitute the highest level of security alert. Who can guarantee that this is not the result of long-term infiltration? Who can guarantee that Dr. Walker, in a depressed state, will not make decisions that would harm the company's interests?"
She paused, then looked at Carl with a sharp gaze: "We must act decisively. Dr. Walker has too much access to core technologies, and his instability is a ticking time bomb. For the sake of BG's century-long foundation, we must take action, or we will not be able to explain ourselves to Mr. Rigoyan and the board of directors."
Carl Muller took a deep breath; Gan Fengyi's words had hit him where it hurt. Risk management, absolute security, board pressure… his last remaining affection for Walker and his assessment of the scientist's value began to falter. "You're right, Gan," Carl's voice regained its composure. "BG cannot tolerate any uncertainty, especially from within… We must suspend all of Walker's work, citing personal health reasons that render him unable to fulfill his current role. His position is crucial; I must report to Mr. Gao Yang and, if necessary, dismiss him."
The order was carried out swiftly, and that afternoon, Walker was quickly and "dignifiedly" escorted out of BG's laboratory in Switzerland by two security personnel. Walker was in charge of both the European and American laboratories, and spent more time in Switzerland.
……
China, Sanbo Laboratory.
When Huang Jiacai received the news that Walker had been officially suspended, he was discussing data optimization plans for the new platform with Yang Ping. He glanced at the encrypted message, his face showing no surprise, and simply said to Yang Ping, "Professor, BG has crippled itself; Walker has been suspended."
Yang Ping looked up from the complex gene sequence diagram, raised an eyebrow, and then calmly nodded: "As expected, Karl Muller's arrogance and suspicion meant that he could not tolerate a failed and uncontrollable scientist. It's just a pity that Walker was such a talented person."
"It is indeed a pity," Huang Jiacai echoed, but a slight smile appeared on his lips. "However, for us, this is the best outcome."
In fact, Huang Jiacai's plan was far from over. What he wanted was not for Walker to suspend his work, but for Walker to leave BG.
Huang Jiacai fears Walker, this potential and threatening "sober man," and he must eliminate Walker.
Karl Muller and his ilk are not a threat; they excel at capital maneuvering, market squeeze, and patent encirclement, rather than truly disruptive technological breakthroughs. In the long run, this poses little threat to Sanbo and the Breakthrough Alliance.
However, the play still needs to be finished.
To convince Karl Muller that he had made the "right" decision, and to assure BG's top management that they had eliminated the "mole," Huang Jiacai needed to give this charade a perfect ending.
In the weeks that followed, the Breaking Wall Alliance's several counterattacks in the international market suddenly appeared "clumsy".
In Europe, a patent opposition application against one of BG's flagship reagents was based on valid grounds, but the attack did not target the most critical issues. BG's legal team easily resolved the case, and the process was so smooth that it surprised BG.
In terms of technological research and development progress, their latest technology has clearly lost its previous focus on BG technology, as if it has suddenly lost its direction, or as if the chief engineer in charge of these devices has been replaced.
These performances appear to indicate some kind of setback, or a loss of accurate intelligence that has caused the counterattack to go astray.
In Karl Muller's view, this was undoubtedly conclusive evidence—the "insider" who had once provided them with accurate intelligence and guided their effective strikes was no more. Without Walker as their "eyes," Huang Jiacai and the Breakthrough Alliance's counterattacks became sluggish and lacked focus.
"It seems we were right to eliminate Walker."
"Look, their actions have thrown them into disarray, and they've lost their inside sources. Huang Jiacai is nothing special after all."
"I've always suspected that the Chinese were able to build their own platform so quickly because there must be someone secretly supporting them, but I never expected this..."
As Karl Muller looked at the reports, a rare relaxed expression appeared on his face, one that hadn't been seen in recent months.
Gan Fengyi nodded slightly, a hint of a smile flashing deep within her calm eyes, but she quickly concealed it.
These "mistakes" in the counterattacks do indeed reflect the loss of an inside man, and in terms of results, they did not cause any substantial damage to BG. They seemed more like a show of maintaining a superficial offensive, which is clearly inconsistent with Huang Jiacai's style.
"Yes, Mr. Carl, our internal environment has been cleaned up. Now we can focus more on advancing our original plans and completely suppress them in the market."
“That’s right!” Karl Muller regained his confidence. “It’s time to show those arrogant Chinese our true strength.”
“But…” Gan Fengyi frowned.
“But what is it? Don’t hold back, just say it.” Carl greatly admired Gan Fengyi; if it weren’t for her reminder, Carl probably wouldn’t have been able to dig out Walker, this mole, by now.
“Dr. Walker is a senior scientist at BG. He is a rare genius. Are we going too far by doing this? I think we can talk to him and give him a chance. Although there will be risks, but…” Gan Fengyi said, expressing her thoughts.
Carl waved his hand, interrupting Gan Fengyi: "Gan, you are too kind, with a strange sense of morality from the East. Let me tell you, we can't take this risk. If we don't get rid of him, you and I will be removed from BG in the near future. We can't bear such a big responsibility. Scientists? We have many scientists. He is just one of them. We can't ruin ourselves because of him."
"I understand." Gan Fengyi nodded as if she had realized something.
……
Huang Jiacai's office.
He flipped through the reports of his recent "failures" and a satisfied smile appeared on his face.
"Brother, I don't understand. It seems like we've lost our way in these counterattacks. Is it because you've been too tired lately?"
Huang Jiahui didn't know why Huang Jiacai, who was usually so shrewd and calculating, had been making a series of mistakes lately. Although the losses weren't too great, it was clearly out of character for him.
"There's a high-level meeting tomorrow morning at nine o'clock. What's wrong with these guys?" Huang Jiacai threw the documents on the table.
Huang Jiahui was completely bewildered. These decisions were all made by you, so why are you blaming others?
