Chapter 1212 Good impression
Boheng shook hands with the other person quite naturally. The old carpenter, Polney, had a stitched scar on his hand that extended towards his wrist, clearly a wound left by improper machine operation.
Polney noticed Boheng's gaze, smiled and raised his hands: "Yes, I am a carpenter. I have done this job all my life, and I still have ten complete fingers."
The men all laughed.
Boheng then turned to two other men, each of whom looked younger than the last. During introductions, the middle-aged man identified himself as the Trion family's chess teacher, while the other, thinner and paler, claimed to be a clergyman from the Emmanuela Cathedral.
Polny, Dobini, Simon.
Boheng silently memorized the names of the three men, especially the old carpenter—Eunice said that the old man seemed to often be able to talk to Worsander.
Younis clearly adored Polnis. During their conversation, Boheng and Gahodore learned that Younis had been frequently helping out at Polnis's workshop these days, assembling wooden strips, sanding planks, and making tables, chairs, and even a new crib for people in the nearby town.
Polnis has a daughter who recently had a baby, and he shows everyone pictures of his granddaughter. Eunice listened to him talk a lot about the baby and then helped him clean the linseed oil off the newly made crib.
Gahodore remained silent throughout, merely observing Eunice's actions with curiosity. Before coming here, Eunice was clearly the most wary of the inhabitants of the habitable land, but now, when she was with Polni, they seemed like a master and apprentice, a father and daughter.
"We haven't eaten yet, so we're going to the restaurant first. We'll talk later!"
"Hurry up, there's a special offer of caramel shortbread today!" Polney waved to Eunice and the others. "See you later."
On the way to the restaurant, Boheng asked some more questions about Polnis, which Younis answered one by one.
“By the way, that Simon,” Boheng’s tone suddenly turned serious, “he seems a bit strange, you should keep an eye on him.”
Eunice was somewhat surprised. In the conversation just now, the tall, thin man had barely spoken. If Boheng hadn't mentioned it, she would have almost forgotten that he had been listening in the whole time: "Does the teacher think there's something strange about him?"
"It's hard to say, but just don't let him get close to our people, and don't let the children be alone with this person."
"it is good."
Just as she was about to step inside the building, Gabrielle turned back again—the three men were still standing in the garden, smoking and chatting.
Is Simon strange? Gahodore wondered to herself. Of the three people she had just met, Simon was the most presentable. This was not only because he was young, but also because he was neither like Polni, who always had messy hair and wore ripped hoodies without a care in the world, nor like Dobini, who would spit when he got excited.
Of the three, Simon made the best first impression on her.
In the restaurant, Lü Qizhen had almost finished eating. Seeing Jiaheduolei enter, she took the initiative to greet her. Boheng and Younis took their seats first, and Lü Qizhen watched their backs as they walked away: "I've been wanting to ask you this before, is your teacher from District 14?"
“I…don’t know,” Gahodore said softly. “I haven’t heard him talk much about the past.”
"Shall we go see Chloe in a bit?"
"Okay." Lü Qizhen gently nudged Jiaheduo's shoulder: "Then I'll go back to my room first and wait for you."
After parting ways with Lü Qizhen, Gahodore sat absentmindedly next to Eunice. Eunice helped her and herself get two full plates of food. While Boheng went to the self-service area, Eunice was still telling her about helping Polni assemble the trash cans a few days ago. Gahodore nodded in agreement until Boheng returned, at which point Eunice suddenly remembered something: "You and the others went to that duke's mansion again a few days ago?"
"Yes."
“Tell me the details quickly.” Eunice lowered his voice slightly. “The teacher is here too—what’s the deal with that Kvischk? Why does he keep coming here, and why do you guys keep going to his place?”
Gabrielle opened her mouth slightly. She knew that Eunice must have misunderstood something, to the point that he regarded her last trip as part of important intelligence.
But what happened that day had absolutely nothing to do with the farm or Hershta—it was entirely Chloe's private matter.
At this moment, Gahodore suddenly felt a little burdened. Although she had never thought that Chloe would be her true friend, she felt guilty about telling others everything that had happened that afternoon.
“It’s unrelated,” Gahodore said. “Chloe has something to say to Kovich.”
"What is it?" Eunice asked.
“Well, anyway—” Gahodore was about to say that it had nothing to do with Hersta, but then she suddenly remembered that Chloe had gone there to expose Hersta’s cold-heartedness to Kovich, so it couldn’t be said that it had nothing to do with Hersta…
Boheng had already noticed Gahodore's hesitant manner. He was both surprised and felt a kind of inexplicable anger—Gahodore was such a loyal follower of his, yet now she was holding back for the sake of Hersta, whom she had only known for a few months. For a moment, he didn't know whether to direct his anger at the manipulative Hersta or at Gahodore, who was so easily swayed.
"Is it inconvenient to say?" Boheng asked softly.
“There’s nothing inconvenient about it, it’s just… well,” Gahodorei said, “that’s Chloe’s secret after all, I—”
"Chloe forbade you from telling us anything?" Eunice's gaze instantly turned wary. "Is she hostile towards us?"
"No, no." Seeing that she was making things worse by explaining herself, Gahodorei had no choice but to tell the whole story. She omitted most of the details of the argument and only briefly summarized Chloe's motives and Kovich's reaction.
Upon hearing the end, Boheng couldn't help but let out a soft sneer. Everything was just as he had initially guessed. Hersta had no feelings for Kovichk, and her kindness and politeness towards him were merely a means to better utilize him for her own purposes.
However, this inexplicable sense of triumph had not been brewing for long before a new layer of doubt arose—if Hersta could use Kovischk so ruthlessly, how could she do the same to herself?
Eunice, standing nearby, shook her head repeatedly. She glared at Gahodore and lowered her head to drink her soup: "It's such a trivial matter, and you're still being so coy about it—I thought something serious had happened. What's there to be embarrassed about?"
“Gahodore probably wouldn’t want to reveal her friend’s privacy,” Boheng said.
Gabrielle glanced at Boheng gratefully.
