Previously, Gao Wushi and Liu Xin discussed the struggle for Japanese power after the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and concluded that with Toyotomi Hideyoshi's shrewdness, it was impossible not to limit the power of the big names headed by Tokugawa Ieyasu during his lifetime and after his death. .But Hideyoshi is not a god, of course there will be unexpected things, and it is impossible to predict and deal with the changing and complicated situation after death.
The samurai official position system created by Hideyoshi during his lifetime, with himself as the apex, tried to bind all daimyo within the framework of his own regime.Moreover, when Hideyoshi was dying and after his death, the so-called "five elders and five enforcement systems" were established.
According to the past, the five elders were the highest decision-making organs of the Toyotomi regime after Hideyoshi's death, and the five chief executives were the practical agencies that implemented the five elders' decrees. Both sides supported the Toyotomi regime before Hideyoshi came of age.
The accusations made by the Japanese scholar Osamu Wakita of later generations have two key elements that caused the impression of the five elders as the decision-making organs of state affairs. One is that the order to withdraw troops from North Korea was jointly signed by the five elders. The power to know and act is in the hands of the five veterans.
Regarding the first point, the Japanese scholar Yuji Sone pointed out that in addition to the five elders, the Five Monarchs also had their signatures (Note: see the paper "Instructions for the Withdrawal of Troops from North Korea" by Yuji Sone), so it was not the exclusive authority of the five elders.
Regarding the second key point, the five elders did jointly sign (or several elders jointly signed, or even Jiakang signed alone) a lot of Zhixing Wanxing certificates. There are several kinds of safety plug and transfer seal.
Among the 1598 Chihsing Wan Xing certificates issued by the elder from December of the third year of Qingcho (62) to May of the fifth year of Qingchou sorted out by the Japanese scholar Yuichi Horikoshi, only four were additions of knowledge and practice.

It can be seen that the increase in knowledge and action signed by the elders, except for Kobayakawa Hideaki and Aoki Shigekichi who fulfilled Hideyoshi's last will, accounted for an extremely small proportion.As for the settlement of the son and stepfather's legacy, the re-settlement of Dang Zhixing, and the transfer of the title, it is just a reconfirmation of almost the same knowledge and practice.
Therefore, it can be seen from the above ratios that although the five elders have the right to know and act, the examples of new knowledge and practice in the actual operation process are extremely limited.
On February 1600st of the fifth year of Qingcho (13), Tokugawa Ieyasu arbitrarily issued a Wanxing certificate, increasing Mori Tadamasa from Mino [-] koku to Shinano [-] koku; Military service; on February [-]th, add [-] shi to the enclave of Hosokawa Chuxing Fenghou.
The reason why Ieyasu was able to do this happened to be that after the death of Maeda Toshiie, the other three elders were in their home country.After Terumoto Mori and Hideo Ukita came back to the house in April of the same year, no other daimyo added Chiyo.
Moreover, judging from the above-mentioned many Wan Xing certificates, all of them are "been executed by Wan Xing". It can be seen that the implementing subject of Zhi Xing is not the five elders, but the five elders are only in name. rely.
Not only that, thirteen days before the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, that is, on August 1598th in the third year of Qingchang ([-]), in the petitions exchanged between the five elders and the five Fengxing, they promised each other to abide by the law and not to form a party. Before Toyotomi Hideyori became an adult, all matters of knowledge and action had to be investigated in detail first, and then discussed by Ieyasu and other elders plus the five ministers, and finally implemented according to the principle of the minority obeying the majority.
As we all know, only Asano Nagamasa is a little closer to Ieyasu among the five honours, and Ishida Mitsunari is a strong anti-Ieyasu faction. Therefore, in most cases, the five honours are superior in number.
In addition, other elders do not necessarily want to see Jiakang become bigger or sell well alone, so although Jiakang is placed in the extremely respected position of the first of the five elders, the most important authority of increasing knowledge and action is still Will be constrained by other elders and adherents.
It can be seen that Hideyoshi's arrangement is very ingenious from his own perspective before his death. He used the prestige of the five elders to maintain the authority of the Toyotomi regime, but also used the five elders to limit the expansion of the power of the five elders.
This is like using official positions to customize the order and prohibiting daimyos from intermarrying privately. The system of five elders and five executions is also a way for Toyotomi Hideyoshi to check and balance the daimyos.
As we all know, the Toyotomi family’s hiding place is about 220 million koku, which is why the Toyotomi family’s strength far exceeds that of other daimyos (Note: Ieyasu’s so-called 250 million koku later actually included a large number of retainers).If any increase is made in the name of the Toyotomi family, it will definitely reduce the Toyotomi family's own hiding places and weaken the strength of the Toyotomi family.
It is precisely because of this that Tokugawa Ieyasu's mind and goal are to increase, and at the same time sell his own favor at the cost of the Toyotomi family hiding in the land, which can be said to kill two birds with one stone.
The existence of the five obediences is precisely to avoid this kind of situation, which is why there are very few examples of the actual increase of knowledge and practice just now—for example, in the previous document of Tadahiro Shimadzu, it is directly said that in the Sazhou (north of Satsuma, one of the three major factions within the Shimadzu family, the home of the Sazhou faction) is his Zhixing, that is, the Shimadzu family got [-] shi, while the Toyotomi family’s hiding place was [-] shi less.
The reason why the five elders are an important existence is that the failure of the invasion of the court and the death of Hideyoshi made the dream of the daimyos to occupy the land of knowledge and practice through foreign invasion come to naught.However, the price paid by the big names in North Korea must be compensated, otherwise there will be troubles, and the five elders are precisely trying to suppress and mediate these big names.
Having said that, there is no knowledge and practice in Japan that can absorb the military achievements and expenditures of the various daimyos who invaded the dynasty. If the Toyotomi family's possessions are used to increase these daimyos, it will have a serious impact on the Toyotomi family's economic foundation and its own strength. It was a huge blow, so this sharp contradiction was just taken advantage of by Ieyasu Tokugawa.
For example, while the other elders were away, Ieyasu's knowledge of Mori Tadamasa and others increased, causing Toyotomi's family to lose the hiding place of 10,000+ stones.And what Hideyoshi did not expect was that after his own death, the death of Maeda Toshiie and the submission of his heir Maeda Toshinaga; crusade.
The original delicate balance was broken, and Mori Terumoto and Ukita Hideie, who felt a sense of crisis, might feel that they would be the next one in their hearts, while Masuda Nagamori, Maeda Genichi, and Nagatsu Masaka tried to fight hard to restore the original state. Therefore, the two elders and San Fengxing finally joined forces, and this was their last chance to bring down Ieyasu.
