I saw a shop selling Beijing-style snacks and inquired about the prices. The shopkeeper mentioned a particular pastry that cost over twenty yuan per pound, but I didn't buy any.
I went to another shop and bought a piece of donkey roll with red bean paste filling. It was more expensive, over thirty yuan per pound.
Hearing about the price, I suggested we go back to the previous shop nearby, where the same item would be six or seven yuan cheaper. But my family insisted on buying from that shop, saying it had a verified "established brand" certificate and seemed authentic. They wanted a small piece of sticky rice cake cut into pieces and coated with soybean powder. The price was even higher than some similar products in tourist areas.
I saw a woman come to buy some goods. She didn't ask the price, but directly asked for four pieces of donkey rolls. The vendor didn't mention the price per pound, but I guessed the total price of those pastries was around 100 yuan. That's enough for a dinner at a restaurant.
I remember once buying duck carcasses and sweet bean sauce at night in the old street area. The items were a bit pricey, but the quality was definitely good. That same evening, near the subway station, I ate steamed buns and wontons. I heard vendors outside some restaurants advertising authentic Zhajiangmian (noodles with soybean paste), but I didn't try it. I've had Zhajiangmian, garlic sausage, and tripe with sesame paste sauce there many times before; some of the dishes were quite delicious.
After finishing my meal and leaving with my things, I saw a stall selling donkey rolls (a type of glutinous rice cake). They were about 20 yuan per pound and came in about ten different flavors. I picked the smaller ones, and they tasted okay. But because they were not cheap, I noticed the stall had a lot of stock.
In the temple fair park, I found a pavilion with a food box and sat down to have some snacks. Since I thought the lamb skewers were too expensive, I didn't let my family buy any. I had eaten fried dumplings before leaving that day, so I wasn't very hungry; a simple snack would suffice.
Her family said she needed to control her blood sugar and should only eat a small piece of pastry, but I still insisted she have another one. She doesn't usually eat pastries like red bean paste rice cakes. We bought a bunch of pastries for Chinese New Year, but none of them were that type.
