Because I had a limited budget, I went to a shopping mall during the Lunar New Year of the Snake to look at goods, planning to buy gold jewelry but not other items.
At that time, I wanted to buy a small gold ring, ignoring all other gold jewelry. My maternal grandmother, who lived in the mortal world, always wore two or three gold rings. One ring was set with a ruby, while the other two had ingot-shaped designs on the front, and were rather plain. She also wore two very small gold earrings, but no other jewelry. Influenced by my family, I also bought a gold ring that time. Even though it was small, it was of a higher quality than all my existing silver rings, especially those set with semi-precious stones, and at least comparable to the small platinum diamond ring I bought more than six months earlier.
Following my family's advice, I bought a closed-loop ring, as it's relatively more durable. This avoids the possibility of loose-loop rings shifting or not being as securely fixed.
I went to a shop, which was another chain store of the same brand as the gold Pixiu pendant I bought; it might also be a franchise. I heard they wanted to buy a gold ring to wear on their index finger.
The middle-aged female shop assistant brought me rings weighing five or six grams, but they were all adjustable. If they were closed, they would weigh around ten grams. The smaller rings were for women, while men's rings weighed four or five grams or more. The shop also had larger rings weighing ten or even tens of grams, which could be worn on the thumb.
When I told her I wanted to buy a gold ring for 2,000 yuan, the saleswoman said that pure gold cost over 800 yuan per gram at the time, plus the craftsmanship fee. She said that 2,000 yuan would probably only buy a very small ring weighing a little over two grams, which wouldn't fit. She suggested buying a standard size ring that would suit me better.
I checked out a few other shops, but with a budget of two thousand yuan, I couldn't find anything suitable. Some brand-name gold shops charge a couple hundred yuan per gram for the craftsmanship of their rings, while others list the craftsmanship fee for a single piece of jewelry as several hundred or a thousand yuan, already calculated. The more grams the piece weighs, the higher the craftsmanship fee. Some shops offer a 5% discount, and others offer a 10% discount for buying two items—these are promotional offers. Other shops don't offer much of a discount.
