The story of Ashima's unyielding struggle against powerful forces reveals the human ideal that light will eventually replace darkness, goodness and beauty will eventually replace ugliness, and freedom will eventually replace oppression and confinement. It reflects the national character and spirit of the Sani people of the Yi ethnic group who "cannot be bent but can be broken."

There are different opinions in the academic community about the origin of this story. Some researchers believe that it first emerged in the primitive society of slash-and-burn agriculture and took shape in the feudal society. It has spanned thousands of years of human social development and has been passed down from generation to generation through word of mouth. After thousands of refinements, it has formed many versions of the story, many singing characteristics, and even many schools.

But no matter which version it is, it shows the tortuous and touching love story between Ashima and Ahei, creates the artistic image of Ashima, a beautiful, kind, hardworking and brave Sani girl, shows the strong will of the Yi people in pursuit of a happy life, and praises the Yi people's hard work, wisdom and fighting spirit against evil forces. Its artistic charm is timeless.

However, because this story has been spread in Sani Yi language for thousands of years, it was not known to the outside world until modern times.

It was not until the movie "Ashima" was made and widely circulated that people became familiar with this story.

Although the movie "Ashima" has been adapted greatly and can no longer reflect the original story, its influence cannot be underestimated. After "Ashima" was published in China in the 20s, it was translated into more than 50 languages ​​including English, Japanese, Russian, French, German, Thai, Czech, etc., and had a profound impact worldwide.

In particular, in 1957, the Japanese poet Rei Uda translated "Ashima" to the island country, and subsequently three translated versions of "Ashima" appeared. These versions had a wide impact in the island country and were also adapted into radio dramas and stage plays and circulated in various forms.

In Zhou Zhi's opinion, Ashima has achieved a perfect unity of content and art, reaching a higher literary realm. From the perspective of narrative poetry, it can be regarded as a model and representative work of similar works.

The singing occasions can be weddings, sacrifices, funerals, labor, life and other occasions. It can be both epic singing and fragment song performance.
