P.S.: I'm really sorry I'm having writer's block, but you know how men are, there's bound to be one or two times a month. Anyway, I'll post tomorrow's chapter after midnight!
Hua Shier was slightly surprised when Lin Kun asked about the introducer right away, but he remained calm and casually replied:
"Didn't Snakeskin tell you? It was Flower Dog who introduced him."
"Oh—a spotted dog."
Lin Kun drew out his words, made a sudden realization, and then abruptly changed the subject, speaking in a casual tone as if they were chatting about everyday things:
"My dog used to be with me. He was missing a finger, but I forgot which one, you know?"
After asking the question, he stared at Hua Shier with the same scrutinizing gaze he would give his prey, a faint smile playing on his lips, as if he were exerting invisible pressure on the young man before him with his eyes.
Hua Shier's lips curled upwards as she calmly met his gaze, her tone confident and relaxed:
"The dog's ten fingers are all fine. Brother Kun, you must have mistaken me for someone else."
Lin Kun met his gaze for two seconds, then suddenly slapped his forehead, a slightly apologetic smile spreading across his face:
"I'm getting old. Look at me, my hair is all white, and my memory isn't what it used to be."
The two of them tacitly understood that this was nothing more than a silent test.
Hua Shier laughed, following his lead, his tone carrying a hint of youthful recklessness and teasing:
"How can a man say he's old? There's a saying that goes something like this: 'A man is a boy until he dies.'"
Brother Kun burst into laughter at this remark, pointing at Hua Twelve with his finger, his approval tinged with surprise:
"That's right, how can a man say he's old? I didn't realize you were so cultured—you've read a lot of books, haven't you?"
Hua Shier didn't take the topic he offered. He waved his hand, his smile fading slightly, and his tone became serious as he steered the conversation back on track:
"None of that matters. You know why I'm here, Brother Kun. You don't know?"
Before he could finish speaking, Lin Kun interrupted him with an innocent look on his face. He spread his hands, his expression so sincere that he seemed completely unaware of the situation.
"I don't know. Why are you looking for me?"
Hua Shier stared at him for two seconds, then his smile vanished completely. He cut to the chase, saying each word slowly and deliberately:
"I want to get the goods from Brother Kun."
Lin Kun blinked, his expression shifting from innocent to confused, his acting completely natural:
"I make electronics. You want to buy pagers from me? I'm going out of business, it's a sunset industry. Everyone uses smartphones and video calls now—you wouldn't be able to sell pagers easily."
Seeing Lin Kun feigning ignorance in front of him, Hua Shier remained unhurried. He took out a cigarette, lit it with a snap, exhaled a puff of smoke, and then slowly spoke, his tone now tinged with coldness:
"Brother Kun, I'm here to cooperate with you with sincerity. From Guangzhou to Hong Kong Island, and from Hong Kong Island to Thailand, isn't that enough sincerity? If you play it like this, it won't make any sense."
Lin Kun pointed at Hua Shier, the feigned confusion on his face vanishing as if blown away by the wind, replaced by a composed smile befitting an elder reprimanding a junior:
"Young man, why are you so impatient? You'll never close a deal if you keep acting like this."
He opened his palm towards Hua Shier, his gaze falling on the cigarette pack in his hand: "You smoke Hua Zi? This cigarette is pretty good over there. Don't smoke it yourself, give me one."
Without saying a word, Hua Shier handed him the whole pack of cigarettes and lit it for him.
Lin Kun put the cigarette in his mouth and took a deep drag, the smoke slowly escaping from his nostrils, a look of enjoyment on his face.
Hua Shier found it somewhat amusing; the scene of Andy Lau slapping Hua Zi was quite interesting.
To be honest, he does look pretty cool when he smokes.
Lin Kun finally stopped beating around the bush. He held a cigarette between his fingers, looking at Hua Shier with a half-smile, his tone drawn out but carrying considerable weight: "You used to be with Old Fu?"
Hua Shier nodded generously: "Yes, Lao Fu introduced me to this industry."
Lin Kun's smile gradually turned cold: "And then you hooked up with his girlfriend and took over his connections. Young man, being ruthless isn't a good idea."
Hua Shier sat opposite Lin Kun, leaning slightly forward. His imposing aura was not diminished in the slightest; on the contrary, he seemed even more domineering than his opponent.
"His girlfriend seduced me. Also, Old Fu is getting old and wants to retire. Even if I stop using his connections, he can't keep them. Besides..."
He paused, a smirk playing on his lips: "Old Fu gave up on cooperating with you, and I came to you as soon as I took over. How can you say it's 'not good'? For both of us, isn't this fucking great?"
Lin Kun muttered something noncommittally:
"That's true, but you even betrayed the older brother who brought you into the industry. How can I trust you?"
Hua Shier chuckled, leaned back in his chair, shrugged, and looked completely unconcerned.
"I'm not working with you. I'm in mainland China, you're in Hong Kong. It's just a transaction. Once the money and goods are exchanged, that's it. Why are you making such a fuss?"
Lin Kun clicked his tongue, as if he was choked by the answer, but he had to admit that there was some truth to it.
He stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray, dusted off his hands, stood up, glanced at his watch, and his tone suddenly became light and polite:
"It's getting late, so I won't disturb your rest any longer."
After saying that, he turned and walked towards the door, his steps neither hurried nor slow, as if waiting for the person behind him to ask him to stay.
Hua Shier saw right through this guy's pretense, but didn't expose him. He simply got up and saw him out without saying a word more.
Reaching the doorway, Lin Kun turned back and smiled at Hua Twelve inside, a smile tinged with genuine appreciation.
"Young man, it's good that you can keep your composure. Tomorrow I'm renting a yacht to go fishing at sea, and I'll bring your people along—I'll treat you to seafood."
Hua Shier smiled, nodded, and readily agreed, "Okay."
Lin Kun waved his hand and walked away without looking back.
The next day, at nine o'clock in the morning.
Ali appeared in the hotel lobby on time and led Hua Shier and his group to the beach by car.
As soon as the car came to a stop, everyone could see a superyacht about fifty meters long moored on the dock through the car window. The white hull was dazzling in the sunlight, and the smooth lines of the hull rose and fell gently with the waves, like a giant beast that was dozing off.
Mouse clung to the car window, eyes wide open, mouth agape in an exaggerated "O" shape:
"Holy crap, that's outrageous! I think all those car enthusiasts are totally lame now! How much would a ship that big cost?"
Hua Shier opened the car door, lightly slapped the back of his head, and curled his lip in disdain, saying:
"Wasn't the cargo ship we used to smuggle ourselves in much bigger than this thing?"
The group of friends were taken aback for a moment, then burst into laughter. The essence of this analogy is exactly the same as someone showing off their Lamborghini and you replying, "Am I proud that I rode a high-speed train worth over 200 million?"
Ali led the way, gesturing for people to proceed.
"Kun is waiting for you upstairs."
Hua Shier led the group up the gangway. As soon as they reached the deck, they saw a number of fierce-looking locals standing around them. They were dark-skinned, strong, and clearly bodyguards.
One of them stepped forward and, expressionless, gestured in English for them to hand over their weapons.
Hua Shier pulled out his gun from his waistband, casually placed it on the tray handed to him, and then gestured with his chin to the brothers behind him. Mouse, Feng Yuxiu, and the others also handed over their guns swiftly and without a word.
Having just handed over his weapons, Lin Kun strode out of the cabin, a warm smile on his face, his voice booming, and full of energy:
"Hey bro, how did you sleep?"
Hua Shier greeted him with a smile, exchanging pleasantries in a natural tone: "Not bad. Thank you for your hospitality, Brother Kun."
Lin Kun waved his hand, feigning displeasure as he corrected him:
"Arranging a room is nothing, it's not hospitality. This is what we call hospitality. Isn't this ship beautiful? Let your people have fun, don't be shy."
Looking around, Hua Twelve saw that the deck was fully equipped with a swimming pool and bar, and the luxurious interior of the cabin was faintly visible.
He looked away and sincerely praised, "Brother Kun is very generous."
Lin Kun smiled and shook his head, appearing indifferent.
"It was all arranged by a friend. I'm just passing on what I've learned. Come on, let's go inside and talk." He told the captain to set sail while leading everyone into the cabin.
Upon entering the cabin, I saw several women sitting around the dining table having breakfast.
Lin Kun pointed to a middle-aged woman with short hair in the middle, his tone carrying a hint of casualness and intimacy befitting a husband:
That's my wife.
He turned to his wife and called out, "Hey, wife—Brother Yu, my business partner from the mainland, I invited him over to go fishing with me."
Sister-in-law Kun looked up, smiled gently at Hua Twelve, and greeted him politely:
"Mr. Yu, have you eaten? Would you like some with us?"
Before she could finish speaking, she saw her younger sister beside her suddenly stand up from her seat. He Yuanyuan stared wide-eyed at Hua Shier in disbelief and blurted out:
"Tianlong?!"
Hua Shier's face also showed just the right amount of surprise, the transition from unexpected to delighted was extremely natural, and the curve of his lips could not be suppressed:
"Little country bumpkin? What are you doing here?"
He Yuanyuan ran out of her seat and instinctively lunged at Hua Shier. But when she reached him, she suddenly remembered that there were other people around. She stopped abruptly, her hands hanging in mid-air, unsure whether to go forward or backward.
Before she could make her next move, Hua Shier reached out and pulled her into a tight embrace.
Lin Kun's eyes narrowed slightly: "You two know each other?"
Hua Shier lowered his head and kissed He Yuanyuan on the forehead before letting go. He then looked up at Lin Kun and answered frankly:
"My girlfriend."
After speaking, he turned to He Yuanyuan and asked in a naturally affectionate tone, "What are you and Brother Kun?"
He Yuanyuan blushed like a boiled shrimp after being kissed in front of her sister and brother-in-law, her neck turning pink. She stammered, "He...he..."
Lin Kun's smile faded slightly as he spoke on her behalf:
“This is my sister-in-law. She’s been studying on Dongshan Island—aren’t you from Guangzhou? How did you two meet?” He had indeed had someone investigate Hua Twelve’s background. However, the person he asked was a friend in the Guangzhou underworld, and all he found out were the rumors and a few dubious stories about 'Yu Tianlong' in the underworld. He didn’t find out that this kid had also come back as the top scorer in the college entrance examination in Fujian.
He Yuanyuan had recovered somewhat from her earlier embarrassment and quickly raised her head, her tone carrying a hint of pride as she eagerly sought to vindicate her beloved:
"Brother-in-law, Tianlong and I are classmates. He's an excellent student; he's the top scorer in our province's college entrance examination this year."
Lin Kun was visibly taken aback: "Top scholar? Really?"
Just now, he was almost convinced that Hua Shier was an undercover police officer who had deliberately approached him by getting close to his sister-in-law.
After all, what a coincidence! They just came to buy goods here, and then a relationship with a sister-in-law suddenly appeared.
But as soon as the words "top scholar" were mentioned, the doubts that had just begun to rise were thrown into disarray again.
The idea of someone going undercover to become the top scorer in the college entrance examination is just too far-fetched and impossible.
But then again, it seems pretty far-fetched that a top scorer in the college entrance exam would come to him to buy goods and sell them.
Lin Kun was somewhat bewildered by these two absurd possibilities, and turned to look at Hua Shier:
"You're the top scorer in the college entrance exam, and you still come here to talk business with me?"
Hua Shier spread his hands confidently, his tone as frank as if he were saying one plus one equals two:
"Isn't the point of studying to find a good job, earn enough money, and enjoy life? I'm going to do business with you now, and I can earn enough for retirement in a few years, avoiding decades of detours. Isn't that obvious?"
Lin Kun opened his mouth, his first reaction was to refute, but after thinking about it, he realized that the words actually made a lot of sense.
He had nothing to say, but he gave Hua Twelve a deep look—this shortcut was indeed fast, but damn it, one could die just as quickly if you weren't careful.
Before Lin Kun could ask anything more, his wife had already walked over from the dining table, stood in front of Hua Shier, and looked him up and down. Her eyes were sparkling, and she had the satisfied look of a mother-in-law looking at her son-in-law.
"The young man is really handsome. No wonder she absolutely refused when I said I wanted to introduce Ali to Yuanyuan."
After saying that, she turned to look at her husband, her smiling eyes clearly saying, "Look, she doesn't need you to worry about her at all."
Lin Kun glanced helplessly at Ali beside him, still wanting to try again for his brother:
"Ali is not bad either. Yuanyuan is still young, she can actually have more choices."
He Yuanyuan immediately became anxious, stomped her feet, and shouted at him, "Brother-in-law!"
Ali was amused and exasperated by his eldest brother's stubbornness, and helplessly offered a word of advice:
"Stop messing around, Brother Kun."
Hua Shier smiled and picked up the conversation, his tone carrying a hint of half-joking teasing:
"Brother Kun, you're going too far. The business deal hasn't even been finalized yet, and you're already trying to ruin my relationship with Yuanyuan?"
Sister-in-law Kun quickly stepped in to smooth things over, smiling at Hua Twelve:
"Don't pay attention to him. Look at his white hair, he's getting senile. Come on, let's go over there and talk. Tell me about you and Yuanyuan."
Lin Kun had originally intended to pull Hua Shier onto the deck to fish and discuss business, but seeing his wife so engrossed in the activity, and knowing that trying to take Hua away from him at this point would be pointless, he could only wave his hand helplessly.
"Okay, okay, you guys talk, I'm going out fishing."
He turned to Ali and instructed, "Take these brothers to the deck to have some fun. Tell all the pretty girls to come out and entertain the guests."
Ali responded and gestured for Mouse and the others to proceed.
"This way, please. There are many entertainment facilities on this ship, so please feel free to use them."
Mouse and the others were taken away, and Lin Kun went out to prepare his fishing gear.
Only Hua Shier, He Yuanyuan, Sister Kun, and a blonde girl who sat at the dining table the whole time, eating her rice and playing games.
Sister-in-law Kun pulled Hua Twelve over and scolded the girl, "This is your aunt's boyfriend, why don't you greet him?"
The girl had short, dyed blonde hair. She casually lifted her eyelids, her gaze sweeping over Hua Twelve's face. Then, she stared at Hua Twelve for several seconds before suddenly uttering something startling:
"Auntie, your boyfriend is even more handsome than a celebrity. Do you want to let me have him?"
Sister-in-law Kun, annoyed, lightly slapped her daughter on the back, scolding her with a mix of anger and laughter:
"What nonsense are you spouting!"
She turned to Hua Twelve and smiled apologetically, her tone full of helpless indulgence and pampering:
"Ignore her, she's been spoiled rotten by Ah Kun."
He Yuanyuan, arm in arm with Hua Shier, jokingly exposed her older sister's misbehavior:
"But my brother-in-law says it's all because you spoiled him."
Sister-in-law Kun glared at her younger sister, feigning anger, and said:
"You brat, I'm your older sister. You need to be on my side, you know?"
She pulled the two of them to sit on the sofa and began to ask them inquiring about Hua Shier's family, studies, and how they had dated, just like a girl from an ordinary family introducing her boyfriend to her parents—warm and detailed.
After chatting for a while, He Yuanyuan couldn't sit still any longer and pulled Hua Shier to the swimming pool on the boat.
Mouse and the others had already changed into their swimming trunks from the yacht, and each of them was holding a pretty swimsuit model by the pool, splashing water and laughing all the while.
Hua Shier glanced around and found that the most serious-looking person was actually Feng Yuxiu—this guy was standing at the bow of the ship with his wife in his arms, facing the sea breeze, playing with the Titanic.
Hua Shier almost yelled at him, "Do you even know that this pose is unlucky?"
Around noon, Ali came over, his attitude even more polite than before:
"Brother Tianlong, my sister-in-law asked me to invite you over for lunch."
When Hua Shier and He Yuanyuan returned to the cabin, Mouse and the others also came in with the models who had been with them.
Lin Kun sat at the head of the long dining table. Upon seeing Hua Twelve enter, he waved enthusiastically and greeted him in a loud voice:
"Tianlong, come and sit down. I caught a grouper today and had the chef kill it for me. You should have a good taste of it later."
"Eastern grouper is not easy to catch," Hua Shier said with a smile as he sat down opposite him, offering a natural compliment:
"Kun's luck is pretty good."
Lin Kun was extremely pleased with himself for saying that.
Everyone sat around the table, and fresh seafood and chilled white wine were served one after another, creating a dazzling array of dishes. The atmosphere gradually warmed up as glasses clinked.
Lin Kun ate while chatting with Hua Shier. Suddenly, the conversation shifted, and he spoke casually, as if he had just remembered something:
"Tianlong, I've agreed to the cooperation. But you haven't said what kind of goods you want—number four, you know?"
Hua Shier raised his eyebrows slightly, immediately realizing that this was yet another subtle test.
"Number Four" is a term used by cops; people in the underworld call it "US dollars."
It's not normal for Lin Kun to say the word 'number four'. If you just follow along, you're essentially handing over the bottom line to him.
He put down his knife and fork, wiped his mouth with a napkin, and slowly corrected him:
"What number four? I want US dollars."
Lin Kun stared at him for two seconds, then suddenly chuckled, a flawless laugh, and went along with it, asking another question:
"Okay, do you want Hong Kong dollars?"
'Hong Kong dollar' is also a trade term, referring to the kind that has been diluted and mixed and sold to retail investors.
Hua Shier shook his head, his tone resolute:
"No need. US dollars are fine. We'll add the ingredients ourselves when we get back. I've heard about your Hong Kong dollars; they're incredibly fair. When doing business, you should mix in a lot of plaster. Those people will still buy it anyway. I'm running a monopoly, you know."
Lin Kun laughed heartily after hearing this, pointing at Hua Shier repeatedly with his finger: "You're an expert! You're right, otherwise how would you make money? You'd eat those bastards alive."
Before the laughter subsided, Lin Kun's phone rang.
He glanced down at the caller ID, nodded to the crowd, picked up his phone, and got up to leave the cabin.
Sister-in-law Kun warmly invited Hua Twelve and his brothers, "Eat up, don't be shy. The mantis shrimp here are really good."
He Yuanyuan peeled a shrimp for Hua Shier, who then ate it with her fingers. The two held hands under the table, oblivious to everyone else, and cuddled together.
Sister-in-law Kun couldn't hide her smile as she watched this scene.
Suddenly, the cabin door was pushed open violently.
Lin Kun walked in carrying a pistol. The smile that had just remained on his face had vanished, replaced by a layer of frost covering his face with murderous intent.
Behind him followed a group of local bodyguards, each holding an AK-47, the muzzles of their guns pointed menacingly towards the dining table.
The models inside the cabin, who had been called in to provide companionship, screamed in terror.
Without turning his head, Lin Kun roared at Ali, "Tell all these women to get out!"
Ali immediately responded and pushed and dragged all the models out of the cabin.
The moment the hatch closed again, it felt as if the air had been sucked out.
Lin Kun walked step by step to the dining table, stopped, and pointed the gun steadily at Hua Shier's forehead.
His voice wasn't loud, but it was as cold as ice shards ground from between his teeth:
"My friend told me that the dog has already been arrested by the cops. You're an undercover agent!!!"
