Chapter 511 Lion's Castle
“It’s beautiful! But we can’t keep calling it the Imperial Outpost, can we?” Olaf scratched his head and looked at Apophis Breo.
Apophis Breo paused, suddenly realizing that Olaf was absolutely right. Their castles all had impressive names, and while the outpost was small for its time during the Empire's prosperous era, it was a respectable castle in Middle-earth's current climate. Moreover, as the cornerstone of a baronial castle, the Imperial Outpost had already set the tone for the castle from the outset—or rather, it could be seen as a bankrupt version of the Imperial baronial castle!
"What should I call it?" Apophis Breo gazed at his first castle, overcome with emotion. He rubbed his hands together, tears welling in his eyes.
"Let's call it Lion Castle! I hope it will stand guard here like a lion, protecting our territory!" Apophis Breo was full of anticipation and hope for this castle.
"Whoosh~" In the biting cold wind, a majestic lion banner of the King's family fluttered in the wind above the main castle. It was raised spontaneously by the soldiers who had just surrounded the castle.
"..." Apophis Breo trembled, a few tears welling up in his eyes. After many years, the great House of King's Landing had once again raised its banner over this land. The lion of King's Landing had returned!
……
"Cough cough!" Olaf opened the narrow wooden window of the castle, letting in the outside air, which stirred up the dust in the castle and made him cough violently.
"By the Dragon God!" Apophis Breo smacked his lips as he gazed at the dusty castle.
"Find some rags, fetch some water, and wipe the castle clean!" Apophis Breo ordered, looking at the dust that could bury everyone.
"Whoosh!" Apophis Breo unfolded a yellowed sheet of paper, which turned out to be a detailed map of the castle. He found a window and, ignoring the biting cold wind, began to study it by the light.
"What are you doing, sir?" Olaf came in from outside carrying large bags and saw Apophis Breo looking like a thief.
“I’m studying the map of this castle!” Apophis Breo said without looking up.
“This place can house 500 soldiers! I’m wondering how to accommodate them?” Apophis Breo said, looking at the map.
"Let me see!" Olaf leaned closer to examine the map.
“That’s definitely the secondary fortress! It’s such an obvious barracks…” Olaf glanced at the map and rolled his eyes at Apophis Breo. The castle’s design was already quite obvious! The four square secondary fortresses, each 20 meters on each side, were two stories high. The first floor consisted of functional rooms and were not habitable, but the second floor was divided into ten rooms each. Although the space was a bit cramped, each room could still accommodate ten soldiers. Just these secondary fortresses alone could hold 400 soldiers. Not to mention the five-story main fortress, which could easily house the lord’s family and his hundred-man personal guard.
The problem is that Apophis currently has about 200 people, which isn't even enough to fill the secondary castle, let alone the main castle. For Olaf, there's not much to study; there aren't many people, so they can all fit in no matter what.
"We now have 200 armored soldiers, which averages out to 50 per secondary stronghold! The knights will move into the main stronghold with you, and that's it, isn't it?" Olaf spread his hands, as if to say, "You, the Grand Duke of King's Landing, have tens of thousands of troops under your command? You're worried about where to put your men, and in the end... you only have about two hundred?"
“Well said…that makes so much sense…” Apophis Breo’s lips twitched slightly.
……
At noon, the knights returned with their horses, laden with bags and bundles. When they first saw the castle, they were so excited that they started gesturing wildly. When they saw the King's Landing banner flying over the main castle, they burst into tears. If the orcs had seen this, they probably would have thought Roland was dead. Otherwise, why would these knights have cried so bitterly?
"Don't just stand there, welcome home! Bring the horses in!" Apophis Breo beckoned to the knights.
The knights, having wiped away their tears, quickly regained their composure and, in groups, helped Sharma up the steps. "Your Highness, the terrain here is a bit too high; the horse can't pull the sled up!" Looking at the stone steps, the Grand Knight had no choice but to have his men untie the sled and pull the horse up first.
"Wait, I'll go get some help!" Another centurion glanced at the sleds piled up to the side with large and small packages tied to them, then turned and ran towards Lion Keep, which was still being cleared.
"Wait, the brothers are here!" Olaf called out to the soldiers to come out and help, and everyone carried large and small bags into Lion's Fortress.
"Thank goodness! I can finally get a good night's sleep tonight!" Olaf smiled as he looked at the tied-up sleeping bag.
"Thank the Dragon God, I'll be content as long as I don't get windy!" The Grand Knight shook his head with a chuckle.
"Although our home is in ruins and needs rebuilding, everything will be alright!" Apophis Breo encouraged everyone.
"Instead of wasting your time spouting motivational platitudes, you should be thinking of ways to replenish the missing items in your territory!" Olaf retorted, looking at Apophis Breo, who was pontificating about his territory.
"Yes, the primary goal now is to address the shortage of beds! Nothing boosts morale better than a good night's sleep on a soft bed! If there's anything, it's adding a beautiful woman on top of that!" The Grand Knight nodded in deep agreement.
“I agree, my back is about to break!” another centurion said, raising his hand.
“It seems everyone’s demands are quite simple!” Apophis Breo chuckled.
“Several hundred beds is a huge undertaking! Don’t forget that there’s no timber growing on these mountain peaks…” the great knight reminded him.
“That’s right. Tell everyone to make do for now. Take down all the marching tents. The canvas can be used as makeshift beds. Although it’s not as comfortable as a bed after laying down a blanket, it’s still much better than sleeping on the hard ground!” Apophis Breo came up with a compromise.
“Let’s go! Let’s go up and take a look!” Apophis Breo excitedly invited the others.
……
The group climbed the spiral staircase and finally reached the top of the main fortress. Looking down, they felt a sense of awe and wonder. To accommodate the water source, Lion Fortress was located near the edge of the mountain peak, with a cliff right next to it. Apart from the weathered walls of varying heights, only Lion Fortress stood proudly on the bare mountaintop, its lion banner fluttering fiercely atop the mountains.
“It feels so empty…” Apophis Breo said with some dissatisfaction.
"It's alright, we'll just expand it later! This area is big enough for us to build a city on a mountaintop!" Olaf was in a good mood.
“Well said! I will definitely make this the largest mountain city in the empire!” Apophis Breo’s eyes gleamed with ambition and passion.
