Chapter 122 The Curtain Falls (The End)

Even if he was still drowsy, this kind of fuss would have woken him up, even if he didn't want to. After these people collected enough data, they finally freed the detectors from Brad. He had already shaken off his previous drowsy state, and his eyes were bright.

He realized that he had escaped those bizarre dreams, and now was... reality!
"Brother." This time it was a definite statement. He seemed a little uncomfortable sitting there, using his palms to support his slightly slumping body. His vision suddenly broadened, taking in the entire scene in the ward.

He glanced at Jiang Hui and Hillman, his gaze finally settling on his father, Lieutenant General Mays. A moment of silence fell over the ward, making Jiang Hui and the other outsiders feel slightly awkward, as if they shouldn't be there.

“He’s awake.” Lieutenant General Mays walked to the bedside, looked down at the person, and gently placed his left palm on the back of the other’s neck.

"Father," the young man called softly. He lacked the solemn and stern demeanor he usually displayed when facing the new students; he seemed more like a child who had made a mistake. Indeed, in front of his father, he was still a child, forever a child.

"Why are you looking down? Do you think you did something wrong?" It was Lieutenant General Mays who finally broke the silence.

Brad certainly didn't think he had done anything wrong.

His upbringing instilled in him the belief that as a soldier nurtured by the nation and supported by the people of the empire, he should defend the interests of the country and its people, even at the cost of his life. Therefore, he had no regrets about nearly dying while saving those children.

In the instant he awoke, he even felt a surge of joy he himself couldn't believe—because he knew he had made the right gamble. Both the children and he were saved, and the price he might have to pay afterward seemed so insignificant.

He moved his hands and feet and was pleasantly surprised to find that his limbs were still intact, without any paralysis or anything, which was better than he had imagined. However, perhaps his joy turned to sorrow, as the movement of his arms was too great, directly aggravating the large wound that had not yet fully healed, and he froze instantly.

"Don't move. You've only just woken up and you're already causing trouble, as if you're afraid you won't be staying in the hospital for long. Just stay still! Otherwise, don't blame me for calling your mother." Lieutenant General Mays's previously composed aura dissipated instantly, replaced by a rather irritable tone.

Brad was a stubborn person in his daily life, always having his own opinions since childhood. Even his transfer here was partly due to the person behind the scenes who sabotaged him, but also partly due to Lieutenant General Mace's support; otherwise, given his family's influence, he wouldn't have been truly left with no other options. Lieutenant General Mace had plenty of ways to resolve things... though none of them were necessarily honorable.

He was more assertive than his older brother and sister, even to the point of seeming somewhat dim-witted, which had always worried the patriarch of the Mays family. He was both proud of the boy's excellence and deeply concerned about his naivety and inexperience.

If there's one person in the family who can keep him in check, it's his mother, the only person he dares not contradict.

It's not that his mother is particularly remarkable. She's actually just an ordinary person, whose profession is completely out of sync with the rest of the family. Due to health issues, she hasn't worked since marriage, only occasionally logging in to the holographic platform to take on freelance work.

But the other person was definitely the one Brad respected most and the one he least wanted to defy. Lieutenant General Mays understood his son and knew that only his wife could make this stubborn son bow his head even slightly.

Earlier, Mays was angry because the child was disobedient. So the father and son had been at an impasse. Now he didn't want to cause any more trouble and just wanted to take the stubborn little brat back. Naturally, this meant involving his wife.

Sure enough, upon hearing his mother's name, Brad immediately calmed down, his breathing even more docile than when he had just woken up, making the Maces father and son envious. Why was this proud youngest son/brother only so obedient in front of his mother... He was the youngest in the family, and if he were always this obedient, they would certainly be willing to spoil him.

“Alright, I can’t possibly keep something this big from your mother. She’s not some clueless housewife confined to her home. I doubt she can keep it from you for long. Just wait for her to contact you. If you don’t want her to come and arrest you herself, I advise you to go back home obediently once you’re better. We’ll talk about it then.” Lieutenant General Mays said slowly, but without any politeness, because it was the truth. Brad clearly knew this too; his back slumped slightly, seemingly unwilling to accept it, but he ultimately said nothing, clearly having accepted a compromise in his heart.

"Alright, there are still guests here. You should thank them, you troublesome fellow. If it weren't for the kids' insistence, we probably wouldn't be seeing you right now." The lieutenant general moved slightly aside and waved to Jiang Hui and Hillman, signaling them to come over.

Under the watchful eyes of the three Mays and with Stark's nod of approval, the two could only nervously approach.

Well... to be honest, they weren't really that familiar with Instructor Mays. Saving people was one thing, but now that they were here, they didn't seem to know what to say.

Jiang Hui had assumed that the naturally outgoing guy would be able to break the ice, but she hadn't expected that even his outgoing nature was selective. He had unconsciously moved behind her and was just staring at her expectantly...

"Instructor Mays, are you feeling better? We came...to see you." Jiang Hui was forced into this situation and forced herself to say three sentences, which didn't really make much sense, but they were enough to be a greeting. Hopefully, the other party wouldn't mind.
Jiang Hui could clearly feel the young man, who had just regained consciousness, lingering his gaze on her, seemingly scrutinizing her for a while, making her instantly uncomfortable. After a long while, she heard him ask, "What's your name?"

Jiang Hui: ? ?

Why are you not playing by the rules? This conversation is getting weirder and weirder, and the logic is falling apart.

Besides, your father just thanked us for saving you... Don't you feel awkward asking this question now? It makes our relationship seem incredibly superficial.

—While that's true, the three of them aren't exactly close, but we can keep this a secret for now. What's the point of asking now?

Jiang Hui knew that if he continued to remain silent, the atmosphere would probably become even more awkward, so he simply went with the flow and gave his name: "I am Jiang Hui, a student of Class 2, Combat Individual Soldier Department, 89983."

The other party remembered very carefully, confirming the details of her name with her, and then asked Hillman in the same way.

Jiang Hui: ...He was really serious.

Jiang Hui: What's your name?
Hillman: Al, so you didn't know.

Jiang Hui: Friend, you didn't tell me.

Brad: What are your names?
Jiang Hui & Hillman: ...

Hillman, who already knew Instructor Mays' full name from his father: I was the only one injured; it's done.
