Chapter 286 After the Match
"Beep beep...beep beep—" The digital clock had just passed 6:01, and the sky was just beginning to brighten, but there was no one in bed. The dark-colored blankets were haphazardly folded and draped at the foot of the bed.

This is a very simple room with few decorations. Even the curtains, which many students don't like, haven't been replaced. They're all white, which actually complements the gray and white decor of the room.

The only thing that seemed out of place in the room was a heavy workbench. This workbench was enormous, taking up almost half of the dormitory space. It was covered with broken parts, making it unrecognizable from its original state. Thick books were piled up in the corners, though they looked quite new and seemed to have hardly been used.

The bookshelves were also packed with thick volumes, showing just how much the room's owner loved reading. However, there was a deliberately empty space in the middle of the shelf, where a small trophy was placed, bearing the inscription: "Champion of the Class D Competition, XX Year, Beska Intermediate Academy, Class 2, Combat Individual Soldier Department, XX Year, Jiang Hui."

Next to it is a traditional old-fashioned photograph, which is far inferior in resolution and clarity to a stereoscopic photograph, but it is very evocative.

The photo above shows the five of them, all looking disheveled with their training uniforms tattered. Jiang Hui was even struggling to stand and had to be supported by Zhou Xiuwen and Hillman like good brothers. However, everyone in the photo looks quite funny, including Clarence, who seems to never laugh.

Jiang Hui came out of the bathroom, freshened up and clean. Her eyes were clear, and she didn't look like she had just woken up. It was the weekend, so she wasn't wearing her school uniform. She found some comfortable clothes, pulled back the curtain, and casually sat on the small sofa by the side to start browsing today's Star News.

She habitually slid her fingertips across the quantum computer, and suddenly felt that her current routine seemed to rely too much on it, as if she had become an alternate electronic cripple in the interstellar world. She began to consider the necessity of subscribing to the print version of the Star News.

However, considering the price she had seen before, she felt it was too wasteful. For her, it was just a glance, and the print version clearly had much less content than the digital version. To just read it and then throw it away seemed like a huge waste. No matter how much money she had, she wouldn't waste it like that, especially since she didn't have much money at all; she only had enough for her needs.

Three weeks had passed since that orienteering race, and Jiang Hui spent a full week recovering from his leg injury. He had been severely berated by the school doctor, who also gave him a hard time when performing photon sutures. Fortunately, he was left with no lasting effects, which slightly eased the expression on Captain Stark's face as he escorted him to the medical office; he no longer looked so frightening.

However, Jiang Hui was genuinely happy with the awards ceremony after it was simplified, since it was an honor she had earned herself.

The prize money and the slot for a custom mecha have already been deposited into her personal account. The former is quite generous, and it's the first money she's earned herself in this new world, which is reassuring. As for the custom mecha slot, club membership, and summer camp voucher, they are all in the form of electronic tickets, in the same category as the housing purchase qualification that Hailusi sent her before. Listing them all, they don't seem very real, and she doesn't need them for the time being.

Unfortunately, there were no team awards in this competition, so each person received a custom badge with their team number printed on it. Those without a team received just a regular badge; the school was quite considerate.

The last photo was taken by Stark, who shamelessly asked her to take it. After the photo was taken, she was carried away by others. Jiang Hui still can't forget the dark look on Stark's face when he saw her leg injury.

Heaven knows what other homeroom teachers and students thought when they saw this: "Ha, they got first place and their homeroom teacher isn't even this happy. Who are they trying to impress?"... People might even think they were just putting on an act.

Because this competition was highly educational and reflected many issues, the school specially set aside two weeks for teachers and students in each class to take time off and review the results.

This was naturally another major "execution ground," where even Jiang Hui, who thought he had done his best, was subjected to various criticisms and corrections, and the other students were naturally not much better off. They didn't start learning anything new until the third week when classes officially resumed.

Schools are all the same, just different names for the same thing, no matter where you are. Even military-related majors are the same, with both theoretical and practical courses. The latter is still the focus for everyone right now, and they have only had two shooting practice courses so far.

However, I heard that there will be a mecha hands-on class next week, which they haven't experienced since the start of the semester. Everyone is quite excited. On the last day of the third week of classes, I heard the first-year students discussing and speculating about it.

Jiang Hui was also quite curious, but the person she was closest to was Clarence, who was in the same class. Both of them were quite unconventional, doing their own thing, and it was hard to imagine the two of them getting together to discuss the new type of mecha and their expectations for the upcoming mecha class.

However, after that match, the other party's attitude softened considerably; at least they would sometimes greet her when they saw her. Once, when she went for a follow-up examination, they even helped her keep her class notes and assignments.

Of course, Zhou Xiuwen and Hillman visited her more often during her time at the medical office. Jiang Hui even took the opportunity to ask Zhou Xiuwen about the principles of so-called mental energy transmission. She didn't have time to learn it during the competition, so now that she had the chance, she should hurry up and learn it so she could use it next time.

When it comes to preparation, Jiang Hui never allows herself to fall behind others.

In short, Jiang Hui's days in the past three weeks of school have been both busy and relatively leisurely.

However, she is currently facing a problem.

After finishing browsing the usual Star News section on his personal computer, Jiang Hui came to his senses. He checked the time and realized it was still early. It seemed a bit too early to go for breakfast, so he pulled out the large book from the top of his workbench.

The book is titled "Conducting and the Art".

The name sounds rather unreliable, and the content is even more so; it doesn't even qualify as a popular science book. I have no idea how it got into the school library. Even she, who doesn't study conducting, thinks it's unreliable, let alone those who actually study conducting.

If there were a suggestion box, she would definitely submit a suggestion to remove this book from the reference library; it's just ridiculous. Even if she reads quickly, she shouldn't waste time like this; every extra second spent on this feels like a waste.

But this isn't the school's fault; the library seems to only have these kinds of books on conducting. Jiang Hui has already collected nearly thirty related books in three weeks, but they're either unreliable or offer extremely marginal descriptions; very few are truly educational, mostly just stories and art…
