The Most Powerful Brain in the Interstellar Space
Chapter 339 The aftermath
Chapter 339 The aftermath
As darkness descended, Jiang Hui's heart remained largely undisturbed, like a traveler who knew he would eventually return home, a strange calm rising within him.
The sounds around me seemed to disappear, and the sharp wind, like a knife, lost its presence, getting closer and closer.
The overwhelming pressure came crashing down on them from behind, leaving no room for resistance. A chill ran down the girl's spine, and she ultimately succumbed to her primal fear, closing her eyes tightly.
Huh? Why did it suddenly... stop?
Jiang Hui, who was ready to say goodbye to this world, opened her eyes in confusion. The surroundings were still dark... but she didn't seem to feel anything.
"Squeak—" It's here?
Jiang Hui shrank her neck, not out of belated fear, but because the sound was so piercing, like a vibration pressing on her eardrums, making her entire hearing system ache.
"Crack crack crack..." Another loud rumbling sound followed, but along with the friction sound, the enormous thing that seemed to have been pressing down on her moved slightly away from her, a beam of light shone in, and fresh air flowed in.
Jiang Hui stiffened, as if in disbelief, and rolled over from Clarence. Midway, her right shoulder seemed to brush against something cold and hard for a fleeting moment, but it was gone in an instant. She kept her eyes closed, hesitant to open them to see what was happening. Her back was slumped against the ground, cold sweat beading on her skin. It took her a long while before she slowly, very slowly, opened her eyes.
The first thing that caught their eye was a large, dark, unidentified barrier. In the dim light, the uneven texture on its surface was faintly visible, and a metallic rusty smell could be detected. Light shone in through gaps around the barrier, and Jiang Hui and Clarence were lying directly beneath an unidentified metallic disc-shaped object.
The moment Jiang Hui opened her eyes, she realized that the powerful pressure she had felt earlier was not an illusion. A metal disc of that size crashing down would naturally create a strong sense of pressure. Moreover, the disc was only about the width of three people's waists away from her.
In other words, if something hadn't suddenly bumped into her from the side, another waist-thickness of that thing would have crushed her back. If it had gone any lower, both she and Clarence would have been flattened into mincemeat.
That's how dangerous it is... Wait, how can she still have time to let her mind wander like this?!
Although they didn't know what had temporarily rescued them, who knew if it was only temporary? While they still had a chance, they should hurry and crawl out of this hellish place.
Without waiting for a reply, Jiang Hui disregarded whether Clarence was awake or unconscious, grabbed his waist, and tried to pull him out.
However, someone quickly helped her with this.
The disc-shaped unidentified object above them now seemed to be suspended by something, instantly creating a safe distance between them.
With that large object no longer pressing against her, Jiang Hui felt her breathing finally become easier, but she remained vigilant until she heard a jumble of noises around her.
"You guys are going over there? Quick, jump up and get ready, Lieutenant Colonel Zong is keeping watch."
"No, the lieutenant colonel has already come down. He's on the other side. Brigadier General Paischel is probably piloting the mech now."
"Never mind, you should go up first. There aren't enough people holding up there. If Angel tries anything again, it could turn into another chaotic battle."
"The mech is already in such bad shape, how can it still..." cause trouble?
"Be careful, there are two more children down there. I can hear them breathing." "Which side? Wait, I need to check—"
"No need. The lieutenant colonel said the children are closer to that side, so he can just lift them up."
……
Jiang Hui had been pulling Clarence along for a short distance when she heard the commotion outside and was initially hesitant to move. However, after listening for a while, she realized that the group outside was likely a regular military force, not rebels, and she breathed a sigh of relief.
Her real thought was that escaping this place as quickly as possible would be safer; waiting for someone to rescue her was pointless. But judging from what they were saying… the people outside were preparing to operate something to open up the things on top and let them out. So naturally, she couldn't continue moving around recklessly, lest she just cause trouble.
Jiang Hui could only remain frozen in place, silently urging everyone to move faster. Clarence, whom she was holding, seemed to have fallen into a deep coma. Even such a life-threatening situation and commotion failed to elicit the slightest reaction from him. His hands were as cold as a dead man's, which made Jiang Hui increasingly anxious.
Fortunately, the soldiers were very efficient. As if responding to her prayers, several different beams of light shone through the arc of light that was near their position.
Then the thing pressing down on her seemed to be completely lifted, and a large ray of sunlight slowly shone on her face. At that moment, the girl was unaware of the complex expression on her face—it was hope, a longing for life, yet tinged with a hint of melancholy that perhaps even she herself was unaware of.
Once the metal disc on top is lifted, if Jiang Hui were to examine it immediately, she would discover that it is not a disc-shaped object at all, but rather a component belonging to the back of the transforming mecha, used for balance adjustment and information reading. It is disc-shaped overall, with its other side connected to the much larger mecha body.
Fortunately, the mecha landed in the perfect position, with its slightly concave disc-shaped components facing down, perfectly positioned to catch Jiang Hui and the other person who had been caught in the vortex.
If they had been even less lucky and had been hit by other parts of the mech first... they probably wouldn't have been alive before the military arrived to remove the mech. So, it's fair to say that the two of them really did have a bit of luck involved.
Of course, at this moment, Jiang Hui and Clarence had no idea that one was completely confused and didn't actually know what had happened, while the other was dizzy from head to toe. Neither of them had any idea what kind of deadly danger they had just brushed past.
The few beams of light that had pierced through the crack were now fully revealed under the bright light; they were the people who had saved them.
Although Jiang Hui was still conscious, after experiencing the entire escape and the life-or-death race just now, she knew without even trying that her hand and leg bones were probably very soft and she definitely wouldn't be able to get up.
She didn't bother with that; she simply raised her head slightly, squinted, and tried to see the person who had come in.
However, whether it was because the light and shadow were too strong or her mind was a bit confused, she could only vaguely see the elongated, blurry outlines of the group of people who had come.
Then a wave of intense dizziness washed over her, and Jiang Hui could no longer maintain her senses. In the very end… she only vaguely remembered the pale and cold jawline of a certain figure.
"...Lieutenant Colonel Zong..."
