Chapter 1446 The Rotten Mansion
Chapter 1446 The Rotten Mansion
Lin Fan had initially thought that only humans on Annie Demon Star lived in poor conditions. But upon entering the Graystone Settlement, he discovered that conditions there weren't much better.
"Life is tough anywhere at the bottom of society..." Antonio sighed, peering out the window.
“This is the real bottom level,” Lin Fan said.
"What about the Loess Plateau?" Lan Bingru asked.
If the limestone settlement is the bottom layer, then what about the loess area, which is far inferior to the limestone settlement?
“I know what Baby means.” Antonio smiled smugly. “She’s saying that the orcs here are the bottom rung of Anemor society. In their mindset, the people of the Loess Plateau no longer belong to the concept of ‘human,’ but are probably similar to the animals on our Blue Star?”
“How can they be the same…” Lan Bingru was at a loss for words.
It is said that humans are advanced animals, but no one really sees themselves as animals.
Let alone those four-legged beasts, even the chimpanzees, the origin of evolution, are not all kept in zoos for people to watch.
If the pure-blooded humans of the Annemo were truly not evolved properly, possessing only human appearances but actually no different from those animals that cannot speak or communicate and have limited brain capacity, people would at most sigh and lament.
But what's the reality? The people of the Loess Plateau clearly possess highly developed thinking abilities, can speak, have complete social relationships and a less-than-ideal moral system, and are also skilled in the use and modification of tools…
They were treated this way simply because they were a step behind the orcs in the path of biological evolution...
"Don't think about it," Lin Fan comforted Lan Bingru, patting her drooping head. "This is destined to be a struggle only for the Annie Demons themselves."
"Hey~ you guys have a good attitude." Bonnie's teasing came out of nowhere.
“Not as good as you.” Antonio’s words, except for those directed at Jin Sichen, have never been used to admit defeat. “He can turn enemies into friends with anyone.”
Bonnie glanced at Chitose, whose eyes were still closed, and breathed a sigh of relief.
“I came here specifically to warn you.” Bonnie glanced cautiously at Garr, who was still in the driver’s seat, and warned in a low voice, “This isn’t the Loess Plateau. Those people are not as capable as you can easily handle. I have to be careful myself. If you really want to get out of here unscathed, you’d better cooperate with me. Put up with their bad temper.”
Just as Antonio was about to change his mind, Lin Fan asked.
"Is the human trafficking here a downstream force of your Silvermoon City?"
"What human trafficking?" Bonnie waved her hand in disgust. "Don't say that later! This is a traditional business of ours, it's been around since ancient times."
"The businesses here are all low-end. The people in the Loess Plateau are of very poor quality; they can only be brought to the Greystone to do low-end manual labor, odd jobs, prostitution, and the like."
“Our Silvermoon City is different,” Bonnie said proudly. “We take the mid-to-high-end route, at least serving as servants to elite individuals. People of your caliber were originally intended for Crystal City to serve as high-ranking noble orcs…”
Seeing the three men staring at her with ambiguous smiles, Bonnie suddenly realized that they weren't under her control yet, and her impassioned words instantly subsided.
"Anyway, we're not on the same wavelength. But my boss has connections with their boss, which is why we're so lucky. Anyway, you guys better watch your step. The people here aren't as civilized as I am."
Antonio rolled his eyes: "No matter how civilized you are, what you're doing is still petty theft."
"You!" Bonnie stared wide-eyed, then felt herself fall backward.
The car stopped.
"You two seem to have a good relationship." Garl grinned enigmatically, pressed the door open button on the middle door, and got out of the car. It was pitch black outside, and he couldn't see where he was.
Bonnie was unsure of herself, so she quickly followed.
"Brother Gar, wait for me!" He called out quickly as he reached the door. "Hurry up and keep up, it'll be hard to find your way if you get lost here."
"Could it be that there's no map here either?" Antonio muttered, being the first to follow.
Lan Bingru followed closely behind Antonio without Lin Fan needing to remind her. Lin Fan brought up the rear.
The buildings here are much more complete than the dilapidated streetscape we just saw. Although the facades still show signs of being pieced together, there's a significant increase in the use of metal and mechanical elements. At first glance, it screams that this is no ordinary place.
"Hurry, hurry!" Bonnie called out anxiously from the front, while Garr was already standing in front of the metal door. "Don't wait until we can't get in."
"If we can't get in, we can't get in," Antonio said dismissively, hands in his pockets. "I've noticed you're afraid of everything. You're like this in the Loess Plateau, and you're still like this in the Orc territory."
"Ha!" Garr suddenly turned around, glancing at Bonnie. "Useless wretch!"
Bonnie really wanted to sew Antonio's mouth shut! Who was she doing all this for?
You can't afford to offend the people in front, and you can't afford to offend the people behind...
How did it end up like this?
He glanced at the dark patch on Lin Fan's shoulder. Perhaps this was the necessary price to pay for such immense wealth?
Seeing that the automatic door was about to close, she didn't have time to think about anything else and rushed out to block it: "Hurry, hurry! It's not safe here at night."
After entering the gate and walking through a dimly lit corridor, a magnificent and enormous building came into view.
The obsidian spire pierces the clouds. A huge fire opal shines at the top, its shimmering light barely concealed by the night.
The wind rustled through the wolf-tooth-shaped wind chimes hanging from the eaves of the tower, their golden light reflecting off the pigeon-blood rubies on the window frames, creating a soft, delicate tinkling sound...
"Didn't they say the Graystone Settlement was very poor?" Antonio was dumbfounded. "Is there a single word of official information from the Anemocracy that can be trusted?"
"Hahahaha~" Gal emerged from the crack in the door, which was studded with fist-sized red-gold rivets, and stood on the steps next to the obsidian giant wolf statue. "Greystone Settlement is indeed poor. But what does that have to do with Manestone Keep? Hurry up, the boss is waiting for you."
Climbing the black jade-like steps, we passed through the heavy sandalwood doors. In the vast main hall, eight enormous white jade pillars were entwined with gilded vines, supporting a huge dome above them. The dome was covered with mosaic patterns made of various gemstones, forming a long, narrow painting.
Lin Fan and his two companions craned their necks to look around the whole way, then lowered their heads and entered another main hall.
A white carpet made of some unknown animal hide stretched from the floor all the way to the throne, while lamps made of giant animal bones hung above the hall.
Scarlet curtains hung between the pillars on both sides, casting shadows of those who walked ahead in the light. The shadows were indistinct, and with the rustling footsteps, it seemed as if many people were hiding behind the curtains.
On either side of the throne were enormous furnaces, from which some honey-yellow solid melted little by little, dripping into the fire and causing a burst of flames.
The throne was covered with a large piece of black fur, and the backrest was made of metal in the shape of a crossed scimitar and axe. The scabbard was inlaid with diamonds, and the axe blade and handle were covered with gold thread patterns.
“Good heavens,” Antonio scoffed, “a mansion that’s worth more than a country!”
Just thinking that every inch of this mansion was built from the dirty dealings of buying and selling people, all those exquisite carvings and dazzling brilliance become like bones being polished and flesh being forged.
All the extravagance became rotten evidence of crime, making one's scalp tingle and one's body shiver.
