Chapter 1911, Section 544: Classic Scene
A cane extended from the carriage, and then a middle-aged man stepped down. He reached out and helped the lady who had been at the window to get off the carriage.
"Are you the cat's owner?" he asked Anan.
"I guess so," Annan said vaguely.
She tried to bend down and pet the silly cat, but it dodged away in disgust.
The woman stood frozen, her mind filled with the vivid disdain in the cat's eyes. Had she just been... looked down upon by a cat?
"How to sell it?"
Annan sized him up a few times, frowned, and said, "Not for sale."
Why don't you listen to the price first?
"I'm not interested in money."
The man sneered, "Interesting. In Sertovis, no one has ever dared to speak to me like that."
Annan calmly repeated, "Interesting. In the Tattun Empire, no one has ever dared to speak to me like that."
"You think you are—"
The man's words were interrupted by a group of black-armored guards who approached. The deputy in charge stood in front of Annan: "Your Excellency Annan, the Minister wishes to see you."
"Has he arrived?"
"Yes, around the same time as you."
“I’ll come over after I’ve dealt with this,” Annan said, glancing at the nobleman who was frozen in place.
Who would have thought that he would encounter such a scene after not returning to Sertoviz for so long?
"Annan?"
"Ah."
"That Annan from Liberty City?"
"it's me."
"Annan, the one who played Jack?"
"If there are no other Jacks."
"You're not at the Great Wall in the north..."
Annan gestured to his deputy: "I'm not here to meet with the minister."
The man's eyes rolled stiffly: "That minister..."
"Just as you think, Minister of the Imperial Military Affairs, Slime."
The deputy, who had no intention of getting involved in such a trivial matter, couldn't stand it any longer and had to speak up to correct him: "It's Lord Steve."
"Oh right, Steve."
The man was silent for a moment, then took out his money pouch. Seeing that Annan remained silent, he gritted his teeth and took out a land deed from his pocket: "And my coastal estate in the suburbs. Please forgive my rudeness."
Black Pearl stared longingly, as if to say that everyone who sees it gets a share.
Annan pretended not to see it, took the money bag, weighed it in his hand, and put it into his magic ring. He then waved his hand and said, "Take the land deed back. You can leave now."
"I will praise your mercy day and night..."
The man seemed unable to believe he was being let off so easily. He let out a long sigh and, pulling his female companion along, retreated with an air of utter obsequiousness.
The deputy remained expressionless; since even the person involved hadn't said anything, he naturally wouldn't interrupt.
"Who is this guy?" Annan suddenly asked his deputy as he watched his retreating figure.
The man, who hadn't gone far, stumbled and had to grab the handrail of the carriage to avoid falling.
"I don't know, but he's probably a wealthy businessman from Sertovis." The deputy paused briefly. "Should I help you find out?"
"Never mind, I'm not a petty person."
As soon as the man steadied himself, he heard the beautiful girl next to Annan say, "You humans are too soft... too merciful. If it were a dragon, they would have plundered the enemy's entire lair."
"Actually, we're pretty much the same. It's all about strength, but dragons rely on strength, while nobles rely on power."
The deputy led the way, with Annan and his two companions following behind. Annan looked down at the silly cat and said, "How about that? I got revenge for you."
"Why don't you tell that human who I am?" The silly cat was unhappy that it hadn't been its turn to take the stage.
"You're such a big shot, what if you scare them to death? A little punishment will do."
……
In the city lord's mansion, the minister sat in the study that had been temporarily requisitioned, handling the official business that had piled up over the past few days.
"Your Excellency the Minister truly lives up to your reputation as a legendary warrior; your legs are truly remarkable. You traversed the entire empire in just two days."
Annan's voice could be heard from outside the corridor before he even stepped inside.
Who would have thought that by splitting into three groups, the weakest of them would reap the most rewards, the ordinary black pearls would come away empty-handed, and the Imperial Minister would nearly drown underground.
"I just have urgent business to attend to," the Imperial Minister said calmly.
"What is it?" Annan asked him deliberately.
The Imperial Minister looked up at Annan's assistant: "The dwarves are secretly mining within the Empire's borders. I'll draw up the location for you later; take men and capture them. I'd like to ask the Dwarf King: do the dwarves intend to break their old alliance?"
"Also, the fact that they haven't been discovered for so long means that humans must be helping them ship their goods. Investigate who is selling large quantities of weapons and armor within the country and arrest all those involved for treason."
Hmm? Could it be that what the minister said is true?
The Imperial Minister's gaze then fell on the silly cat, like a pebble thrown into a calm pond, creating ripples.
He had completely overlooked the cat's existence. For a legendary warrior, this was virtually impossible, unless the opponent was also a legendary-level assassin, or…
"Saint?"
The Imperial Minister recalled some rumors.
"That's right, standing in front of you is—"
Annan stepped aside, almost guessing his deputy's foot, revealing his silly cat-like expression: "The ruler of the night, the master of all cats, the cat and the midnight maiden!"
When you're out in the world, your reputation is something you earn yourself. Regardless of what Annan calls "Silly Cat" in private, in front of outsiders, "Silly Cat" is a supreme deity.
The Imperial Minister stood up and, together with his deputy, paid homage to the cat and the midnight maiden.
The gods provided much assistance during the transition between humans and elves, and even disregarding that, it is only right to maintain respect for beings far more powerful than ourselves.
The Imperial Minister asked Annan, "Is this related to the discovery you mentioned, madam?"
Annan nodded.
The deputy left the study on his own initiative, and Annan also told Black Pearl to leave first.
Annan adopted a serious tone: "What happens next, you must ensure that no one except the Emperor and a few trusted high-ranking officials knows about it."
"The gods bear witness, I will not tell anyone except the emperor," the Imperial Minister swore.
Annan nodded; he had already prepared his message to the Empire on his way here.
He began by recounting how the Blackwatch Legion encountered the Spider Queen, Lolth, who collaborated with the Chaos forces in the North, ostensibly digging a rat hole into the Empire, but in reality setting up a warp anchor point.
To highlight his own actions and absolve the little spider of its mistakes, Annan said, "Rosie the Spider Queen reformed herself under his influence."
"Hey, you're not angry?"
The silly cat wondered in his heart about Rosie the Spider Queen.
“I believe him,” Rose replied.
You guys are disgusting!
"Rosie the Spider Queen..."
Upon learning that there was a second saint behind Annan, the Imperial Minister fell into deep thought.
So, including Lady Fortune, there are three deities behind Liberty City?
This scene was not uncommon during the transition between the Elven Calendar and the Saint Laurent Calendar. Many great nobles and powers had the shadow of one or more gods behind them, and the Supreme King and the Golden Family even had saints personally helping them.
Even in turbulent years, Annam was able to gather three deities.
