Police officer Chen Shu
Chapter 847 Struggle and Decision
Chapter 847 Struggle and Decision
The hotel room was very dark with the lights off.
Chen Shu lay in bed, staring at the ceiling above him, unable to sleep.
"Chen Da, are you willing to accept the organization's mission?"
Xiao Wang had already left, but his last words kept echoing in the room and in Chen Shu's mind, as if waiting for some kind of fateful response.
Chen Shu always felt that he was just an ordinary person.
From the first day he entered the police academy and participated in the physical fitness test, he was squeezed on the track with many other high school seniors: 1,000 meters, shot put, and pull-ups. His results were only slightly above average.
After graduation, I didn't get a chance to pass the entrance exam for a high-ranking position in the public security department, nor did I get a chance to join a government agency in my hometown. Instead, I just followed the crowd and joined the special police training program.
As soon as the training ended, he was sent to the police station. Although he became the top case-handling expert in the city several years later, he mostly handled petty theft cases.
He was later transferred to the Special Police Brigade as deputy captain, where his daily routine consisted of street patrols and physical training, occasionally assisting in cracking down on gambling and prostitution. Compared to his time at the police station, it was more like just getting by.
Very normal.
However, Chen Shu always felt as if there was a hand behind his back, pushing him forward forcefully, pushing him beyond the normal range.
Especially during his occasional free time when he had meals with classmates and friends, Chen Shu would drink and listen to them talk about football and basketball, his wife nagging about the children's studies, so-and-so's bright future, and so-and-so's dead end, etc.
He found himself unable to fit in.
Whether it's the national football team's predicament and the balance of national prosperity, the chaotic situation of children doing their homework, or even the gossip and backstabbing within the industry, Chen Shu cannot empathize with them.
Amidst the laughter of everyone at the table, he inexplicably couldn't laugh. He could only shake his head slightly and down the drink in one gulp.
Thus, during busy workdays, during moments of revelry, and even while lying in bed drunk, Chen Shu's mind was constantly filled with past experiences.
It was not as glamorous as described in the archival materials.
For example, the perpetrator in the hostage situation at the train station, who died from his injuries after being arrested, often kept popping into Chen Shu's mind.
His clothes were tattered and ragged, his face was distorted, and he could only stare at Chen Shu with his empty eyes, muttering about the injustice of the world.
Another example is the elderly man who gave up his and his grandson's only seat in the high-speed train accident, only to lose his grandson in the process.
Each time the old man appeared or left without a sound, Chen Shu felt a deep sadness imprinted on his heart, one that he could not shake off.
For example, the thugs in Nanjiang were killed in the cave by Chen Shu with several hand grenades.
They lined up and walked to Chen Shu. Shadows writhed everywhere in the room, sometimes turning into blurry figures, missing limbs, their outlines distorted and incomplete.
"Have you forgotten? You promised to let us go as long as we surrendered."
The ghost reached out, its fingertips icy, and poked at Chen Shu's heart, then burst into a sharp howl.
"Because of you, we will never find peace!"
The ghosts receded like the tide.
"Hey, Brother Shu." Xiao Qiang, the community assistant from Zhongshan, greeted him as cheerfully as ever. "I'm here to help out in the security team, you don't mind, do you?"
Turning around, I saw that Xiao Qiang had put on a formal police uniform, with a gun slung over his shoulder. He was carefully touching the gun in his hand while grinning triumphantly.
"What are you thinking about? What are you afraid of? This isn't the way our wise and mighty Chen Da should act." Bomb disposal expert Xu Mingliang crossed his arms, gestured with his chin towards Chen Shu, and comforted him, "Actually, things are pretty good on my end too, at least everyone's here."
Needless to say, the team's acknowledged senior leader, along with three of his good brothers who were also police officers, came to see Chen Shu make a fool of himself.
"Chen Shu! You're a police officer! So how can you say such irresponsible things so confidently!"
Zhang Yang, staring at her angry big eyes, looked extremely handsome.
Sometimes, Chen Shu actually envied Zhang Yang's personality; once he set his mind on something, he would charge forward without hesitation or weighing the pros and cons.
Even though she is already a popular female host on a prefecture-level city TV station, and even though she is already a locally well-known self-media influencer.
She's beautiful, assertive, and has a respectable job.
But whenever someone asks her for help, she always rushes out without hesitation. Just like this time, even though she had already experienced the horrors and terror of northern Myanmar before, she still went.
Is this foolishness, or faith?
So, what about the police's beliefs?
"Hey."
With a sigh, the room fell silent once more.
Chen Shu raised his right hand, held it up to his eyes, and examined the hand, which was not clearly visible in the darkness.
He knew that after experiencing so much, he was no longer the same as ordinary people, or even as the police.
The blood debt on his hands meant he couldn't escape or hide from it.
The darkness in the room grew even deeper, almost suffocating, and nearly drawing one in, making one lose their way.
When Chen Shu opened his eyes, the sky was already slightly white, and the morning light shone into the hotel room through the gaps in the curtains, bringing a pale warmth.
But the shadow in his heart still could not be dispelled.
Next room.
Zhu Yiba sat in a chair, with a cell phone on the table directly in front of him.
The phone screen was black, with nothing on it, but Zhu Yiba just stared blankly at the screen.
I stared at it all night.
Yesterday, my father's bodyguard, Brother Lin, flew all the way from Beijing.
The goal was simple: to prevent Zhu Yiba from going to northern Myanmar.
"Brother Lin, you were in the army too. If I could tolerate this kind of situation, would I even be human?"
Even if the old man were standing right here, he couldn't stop me!
"Damn it! Nobody can stop him!"
At first, Zhu Yiba was very excited, as expected.
He took a sudden step forward, firmly blocking the other person's path, his eyes burning even more fiercely.
Lin Ge remained completely still, standing straight in front of Zhu Yiba. His only action was to shake his head. No meant no. He came from a military family and didn't care about such details.
Zhu Yiba knew Lin Ge's personality well; if Lin Ge didn't agree, Zhu Yiba wouldn't be able to go anywhere, not even in the first place.
In the end, Zhu Yiba's voice choked with sobs as he pleaded, "Brother Lin, I've already deserted once. If I keep deserting, my life is over."
"No, this is an order." Brother Lin said coldly, his tone firm and low, without any further explanation. "Pack your bags. I'll pick you up at seven tomorrow morning. Xiao Zhu, you've been willful for too long. It's time to go home."
After saying that, Brother Lin turned and left.
Time passed quietly, and dawn broke.
Snapped.
"Heh, does being the father necessarily mean you're right?"
Zhu Yiba slammed his hand on the table and stood up abruptly.
He raised his hands and vigorously rubbed his cheeks twice. His eyes widened, he straightened his chest, opened the door, and walked out.
Click.
The door next to it was opened at the same time.
Chen Shu and Zhu Yiba walked out of their rooms one after the other and came to the shared corridor. They glanced at each other and smiled frankly.
The gears of fate begin to turn slowly, and every struggle and choice affects the future of them and those around them.
