Chapter 870 Soul Theory
"First, memory is the foundation of the soul. The continuous or intermittent recording of information about the material world in continuous time and space segments determines whether a living being's soul exists!
Second, the soul is related to matter. There must be some kind of connection between the soul and matter. The two can influence each other, and the so-called matter determines the spirit, and the spirit interferes with the matter!
Third, perception determines the continuation of memory, which is the extension of the soul. Only by perceiving the outside world and continuously incorporating external information into continuous memory can the birth and continuation of the soul be guaranteed. "
"And these are the three laws of the soul that I have summarized!"
Lin Chen's deep and deep voice echoed throughout the laboratory.
Taoists believe that the soul is the "primordial spirit" and the origin of the connection between man and the universe. Through practice, one can return to nature and become one with Tao.
Buddhism regards the soul as "consciousness" and the subject of reincarnation, and emphasizes the need to practice to escape from reincarnation and achieve nirvana.
Theologians generally believe that the soul is the eternal essence given by God, the link between man and God, and has a sacredness that transcends the flesh.
As for scientists, they are skeptical about the soul and tend to explain consciousness from the perspective of neuroscience and psychology, believing that the soul may be a product of brain activity.
Although various schools of thought have different views, in Lin Chen's previous life, the soul, as mankind's exploration of self-transcendence and eternity, has always been one of the core issues of philosophy and religion, because there is no objective phenomenon that can directly prove the existence of the soul.
But after reincarnating into this chaotic universe, in this great universe where supernatural powers flourish, the soul has become something that any powerful being in the world cannot avoid encountering when they reach a high level.
After a long period of practice in the world of immortal cultivation, Lin Chen has roughly grasped the key to the so-called soul. At least judging from the results of his current practice, [soul] and [information] can be said to be closely related.
This so-called information, in the soul, manifests as [memory], which is how he derived his first law of understanding the soul:
Memory is the foundation of the soul.
After practicing the Nascent Soul Transformation and the comprehension of the true spirit, Lin Chen gradually grasped one point. The only true spirit that the cultivators refer to is probably referring to all the information perceived by the external matter within the original body, and the corresponding memories.
To put it simply, the so-called true spirit, soul, primordial spirit and the root of everything are not something mysterious, but all the memories of what you have experienced in your original body.
Memory is the key to the soul, or the root of the soul.
Of course, someone might say at this time, if I copy my memory and transfer it to another body, wouldn’t there be two more of me in the world?
Indeed, the memory is the same in this case, but the problem is that the body is different, or rather, the information that carries the memory is also different.
No matter how accurate the information in the copied body is during the transcription process, it can never be exactly the same as the original, just like there can never be two identical leaves in the world. As long as there is change, there will be differences.
When there are gaps in the group, there will be subtle differences in the perception of the outside world, and the recorded memories will also be slightly different. As it continues to develop, it will eventually split into two different people.
This is why there are so many split souls in the world of immortal cultivation that eventually turn against the main body.
And it is precisely because memory determines the soul, so the more books he reads, the more principles he understands, and the more things he goes through, the more different experiences he will have, and his soul will continue to grow stronger in the process. When he becomes almost omniscient and omnipotent, he will be called an immortal and praised as a god by everyone.
That's why the souls of those ignorant monsters are so weak, while those who have read the books of sages and understood the truth have strong minds, the immortals who have comprehended the great way and controlled the laws of heaven and earth are amazing, and the evil gods sleeping in the deep sea are extremely terrifying... Why is there such a big gap between them?
That is because in their minds, the amount of information remembered is completely on a different level. The more information or knowledge recorded, the stronger the essence of the soul will be.
If one loses his memory, not only mortals but even gods and immortals will lose themselves.
Just like if one loses the memory of the previous life after reincarnation, one will completely fall into the mortal world. That is why Taoists say that the mystery of reincarnation in the womb is the most dangerous. If one is not careful, and loses all the memories of the previous life, then even the immortals and gods will fall into the mortal world.
So at least in Lin Chen's view, the soul is closely related to memory. The more terrifying the amount of information contained in the memory, the higher the essence of the soul will be.
The memories of his past life cannot be invaded by any existence in the world of immortal cultivation in this life. It is probably because when he was traveling through the dimensional universe, the memory information of who knows how many years has passed, which makes it impossible for any creature below the level of He Dao in this universe to analyze and understand it.
But again, because he also has no information about the world of immortal cultivation in this universe, he has to start from the beginning and climb to the top step by step.
'If that's the case, then this so-called enlightenment makes sense. Grasping the information of heaven and earth is the refining of the soul, and comprehending the laws of the universe is the unity of the Tao. The more knowledge you master, the more powerful you will be...' Thinking of this, Lin Chen had a vague understanding.
As for the second, the soul is related to matter.
Taoists believe that a person is composed of two parts: soul and spirit. The soul is the spiritual level, and the spirit is the physical level. The soul and spirit are in harmony with yin and yang. Yin alone cannot grow, and yang alone cannot be born. The two cannot exist alone.
The immortal cultivators in this world also believe that only when the essence and energy are sufficient can the spirit be born, and that spirit and matter cannot exist separately.
Even though the body is not important to a cultivator after reaching the stage of Nascent Soul Transformation, it does not mean that the spirit can exist independently of matter.
Because matter refers not only to the flesh and blood body, but also to the essence that constitutes everything.
In previous lives, this essence may be microscopic particles, cosmic strings, dark matter, etc., but in this chaotic universe of this life, this substance is chaotic energy, which is spiritual energy.
Aura itself is also a kind of matter!
Although souls, spirits, and primordial spirits seem so idealistic, they are essentially a combination of spiritual energy and soul, and are no different from the original flesh and blood body.
Therefore, the soul and matter are closely related. Whether the former interferes with the latter or the latter affects the former, the two are not opposed or separate from each other, but are originally one.
As for the third, perception determines the continuation of memory, which is the extension of the soul.
That's even simpler.
Only by sensing the outside world can memories be born, can reactions be made, and things can be called living things, and souls be born. Only by sensing the outside world and making reactions can humans judge whether something is dead or alive, a living soul or a corpse.
Perception determines the birth and continuation of memory, that is, it determines the formation and growth of the soul, and the soul and matter influence each other...
These are the three laws of the soul summarized by Lin Chen.
Only with memory can there be a soul, so even a fish with only seven seconds of memory has a soul, so microorganisms with only simple memory can have a soul, and so trees can record the memory of time through their annual rings to have the so-called spirituality... Only memory can give everything in the world a soul.
Those who have only simple memories like ordinary trees and microorganisms are called spirituality; those who have certain memories like beasts and can give birth to the concept of self are called souls; those who have enough memories like living creatures to give birth to wisdom, can recognize themselves, and explore the outside world are called true spirits...
The amount of memory determines how far the soul can go, whether it is the birth of wisdom, the formation of a soul, or even the birth of one's own true spirit.
The ability to receive and input information from the outside world is the difference between living things and inanimate objects. The rate at which information is input represents the strength of perception. This is also the difference in racial talent between geniuses and mediocre people, monsters and humans.
As for the relationship between the soul and matter, perhaps it is the origin and origin of the supernatural.
Perhaps the extent to which the soul is related to matter can determine whether a supernatural being will be born in this world.
If the two are strongly correlated, then perhaps it is a chaotic universe where individual power transcends and the spirit can directly interfere with matter.
If the two are weakly correlated, then perhaps the manifestation is a technological universe of the Way of the Masses, where the mind cannot directly interfere with matter, but must first act on the body, create technology, and finally affect reality...
“…So these three laws are my assumptions about the laws of the soul!”
In the end, Lin Chen made the final decision with just one word.
"Memory is the foundation of the soul. The soul is related to matter. Perception determines the continuation of memory, which is also the extension of the soul..." Fang Zhengyang fell into deep thought after hearing this.
Because for a moment, he couldn't find the loophole in this law.
Whether it is the judgment of living or dead things, the connection between the body and the soul mentioned in ancient texts, or the methods of strengthening the soul in myths and legends... they all seem to be inextricably linked to memory, perception, and matter.
"Then how do we apply this law to research?" After a long silence, Fang Zhengyang spoke hesitantly.
The soul has always been something that human civilization in real time and space has never touched upon. Even if the three major laws were assumed, he couldn't figure out how to study it and where to start.
"It's very simple. We will conduct derivative research based on these three laws to prove or disprove hypotheses, and use them to think about what kind of technology can be born..."
Lin Chen smiled slightly and said:
"For example, the second point is that the soul is related to matter. Then what in the soul is related to matter? Is it the messy thoughts, the hard-to-change cognition, or the incense and faith in myths and legends?"
"Which substances have a strong correlation with the soul, and which substances have a weak correlation with the soul? For strong substances, can we use our spirit to interfere with the substances, so as to create objects like the flying swords and magic tools in novels that can move with the mind? For weak substances, can we make forbidden chains and imprisonment containers to seal these supernatural objects?"
"The strength of this correlation is affected by the environment. A strong correlation represents a prosperous era of cultivation, while a weak correlation represents the end of the Dharma era. Can we use this to make a corresponding instrument to determine the strength of the correlation between souls and matter in the area, and thus determine whether a supernatural event has occurred?"
Lin Chen spoke eloquently and clearly explained the practical application of these three laws:
"The first point is that memory is the foundation of the soul. Memory is a kind of information. So what kind of information can strengthen the soul, and what kind of information can harm the soul? Can we use this to distinguish between supernatural things that are useful and useless to humans?"
"Can we collect those useful information and make them into so-called visualization diagrams and exercises, so as to increase the souls of each of us humans?"
"Can we make harmful information into some kind of weapon to deal with monsters and enemies in supernatural events?"
"And if we can integrate all the information in human memory, can we interpret the laws of this world, and then find matter that can have a strong connection with the soul? Can we interfere with matter with the spirit and exert a power comparable to that of the Creator?"
Having said that, Lin Chen paused, looked at the remains of the female tree in the safe container, and said lightly:
"Even if we don't talk about anything else, just talking about the situation of this monster, it can emit unknown brain waves, interfere with our perception, and thus control our bodies."
"Take the third law for example. Perception determines the continuation of memory, which is the extension of the soul. All of our actions are based on our perception of the outside world and the judgment of past experiences in memory."
"This monster distorts our external perception through brain waves, making us believe that everything we do is correct. In the end, it even controls us."
"Does this mean that if we can deceive or distort the other party's perception and make them think that what they are doing is what they imagined, we can manipulate them to some extent."
"Is this method equivalent to the soul-stealing in our myths and legends, and the mind control in Western mythology? If we can copy this method, can we control others or even monsters?"
"It's not just a distortion of perception, but a complete blockage of perception, completely severing the continuation of memory. Doesn't this amount to another kind of death?"
“By then, if we can completely copy or simulate this kind of brain waves, once we know the target’s information, we can enter it into the system and kill people by transmitting the waves thousands of miles away. Isn’t this method, this ability, equivalent to the underworld treasure in our myths and legends—the Book of Life and Death!”
After hearing this analysis, Fang Zhengyang's eyes suddenly widened, a flush appeared on his face, and his breathing became rapid at this moment, revealing his immense shock and excitement.
And in the laboratory, at this moment, it seemed that only Lin Chen's voice was left:
"Memory, perception, matter, if humans can fully comprehend the mysteries within, they can use them to step into, or even control, the mysterious realm of the soul!" (End of this chapter)
