Chapter 708 Feudal State-Owned Economy
The ending is indeed not difficult to predict.
Li Yu never thought that thirty days ago he was still on the boat mourning the loss of his ancestors' foundation and worrying about the ruin of Jinling City.
As a result, thirty days later, he was able to witness the end of the Song Dynasty together with that unreasonable Zhao Kuangyin.
The wonderful things in the world are often far beyond what ordinary people can imagine.
Looking at Zhao Kuangyin's stunned expression, Li Yu couldn't help but wonder, what would his grandfather feel if he knew his current situation?
But come to think of it, as a king of a fallen country, since his father had deposed as the emperor and pledged loyalty to Zhou, shouldn't I be okay?
Besides, didn’t Zhao Kuangyin also say that he seemed to have a great literary reputation in later generations, and he also made later generations remember the name of Southern Tang.
Moreover, according to the idea of great unification, the Southern Tang Dynasty was at least not destroyed by foreign races, and the family members were not bullied or harmed.
So Qian Chu watched Li Yu's three pupils turn in several directions, and a smile actually appeared on his face.
The King of Tang in Jiangnan, does he not care about the occasion when he gloats over other people's misfortunes?
At this moment, Qian Chu even sincerely rejoiced:
How wise it was to reject Li Yu's request for Wu and Tang to join forces to resist Song!
"Why is Congjia laughing?"
As expected, all of this was seen by Zhao Kuangyin.
Qian Chu was a little worried about Li Yu, but he didn't expect Li Yu to be so clear and organized:
"I really don't like this idea of a light curtain."
"Now that we can see, we know that these disasters will never happen again."
"How can I not laugh when I am happy?"
It was reasonable and well-founded. Zhao Kuangyin was stunned for a moment, and then burst into laughter.
……
"This Jia Sidao, his methods are lenient when they should be severe, and severe when they should be lenient."
Listening to his father's sigh, Zhu Biao felt that it was not unexpected.
Perhaps because the Ming Dynasty wiped out China's six hundred years of illness, people before the Song Dynasty liked to comment on it, just like Jia Sidao now.
Moreover, this comment always needs someone to praise. Empress Ma looked at Zhu Biao, Zhu Biao looked at Zhu Di, Zhu Di looked at Zhu Bai, Zhu Bai was innocently talking to Zhu Xiongying in a low voice, Zhu Di had no choice but to ask:
"Dad, are you saying that Jia Sidao's public land law is useless?"
So the emperor said with a straight face:
"I told you guys to read more history books earlier, but now you don't even know such a small thing?"
Although it was a scolding, Zhu Biao could feel that there was joy in the words.
Zhu Di, who was the first to bear the brunt of the pain, couldn't help but wonder, whose turn will it be next? Sixth brother? But he would go to Beiping after the New Year, wouldn't it be a loss if he couldn't see him then?
"If Xiangyang is lost, Song will be hard to survive. Fourth Brother! Who is the key to Xiangyang?"
Zhu Di subconsciously straightened his back:
"It's Liu Zheng! It was this man who joined Hu Yuan and trained his navy to plan the attack on Xiangyang!"
"I understand what you mean. Jia Sidao should have killed Liu Zheng directly. Otherwise, he would have surrendered to the Hu Yuan..."
"Shit!"
Zhu Yuanzhang shook his head:
"Fourth Brother, do you think the Song soldiers back then were as brave as our Ming soldiers?" "But Dad, the military books all say that the army should be strictly disciplined!"
"A military book is a military book. It is for a good family to bully their ancestors just because they want to check the empty salary. They are even worse than bandits! If you punish him strictly, he will dare to strike back!"
Zhu Yuanzhang's eyebrows kept twitching when he talked about it:
"For the Southern Song Dynasty, dealing with the Hu Yuan is the most important matter, and the most important thing is military affairs."
"The military is related to the life and death of the country. We need to devote all our energy to the military, to the central military, and to the careful control. How can we apply one rule to the whole army? So there are suspicions of factional strife in various places again?"
"And what about those landlords? When the country is in crisis, they still have to think carefully. This matter should be done in a big way to let these parasites know Hu Yuan's methods. However, Jia Sidao has been meticulous about these things."
"As a result, the Song army reinforcements on the front line couldn't even enter Xiangyang, and Jia Sidao couldn't even enter the gate of the landlord's house. How could they not perish?"
Zhu Di scratched his head. Why did it feel like he was talking about commanding the army, but his father was talking about governing the country?
[When we talked about the Three Kingdoms before, we emphasized the role of Xiangyang.
As the throat between the north and the south, the fate of the Southern Song Dynasty was sealed after the fall of Xiangyang.
Some people are alive, but they are already dead. This was roughly the situation in the Southern Song Dynasty.
Standing here and looking back at the Northern and Southern Song Dynasties, it is still difficult to make an evaluation that is not controversial.
But what is certain is that the Song Dynasty was indeed a peak period of development of feudal commerce in my country.
Commercial tax can be traced back to the Xia Dynasty, but it was not until the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period that it became one of the main sources of fiscal revenue.
The Song Dynasty ended this chaotic era and, like a normal dynasty, absorbed the advantages of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms. Many people know that commercial tax revenue exceeded agricultural tax during the Northern Song Dynasty.
According to historical records that have survived to this day, at the end of the Zhidao period of Emperor Taizong of Song, Zhao Guangyi, the total income from agricultural taxes on rice, silk, cloth, cotton, tea, and miscellaneous goods converted into money was 2381 million strings of cash. In the same year, the total income from commercial taxes on monopoly, wine, tea, salt, copper, and silver was 1167 million strings of cash.
In comparison, about a hundred years later, during the tenth year of Xining during the reign of Emperor Shenzong of Song, Zhao Xu, agricultural tax revenue was 2021 million strings of cash. In the same year, commercial taxes increased to include wine, maritime trade, market transactions, and market transactions, with total revenue reaching 4248 million strings of cash.
Looking at the Song Dynasty alone is not very intuitive. We have previously listed the increase in commercial taxes during the Tianqi period, and also said that the reason why Tianqi was able to quickly raise commercial taxes was because the commercial taxes in the Ming Dynasty were extremely simple.
But that belongs to the late Ming Dynasty, so it is unfair and not intuitive to use it for comparison. Here, we will use the period of Emperor Xuande, the good sage, which belongs to the early and middle period, for comparison.
During the Xuande period, there were only six items of commercial taxes, including commerce, wine, tea, salt, silver, and iron, totaling 202 million strings of cash.
We have emphasized the liquor tax before, so the comparison here is very intuitive. During the reign of Emperor Taizong of Song, the liquor tax was 111 million strings of coins; during the reign of Emperor Shenzong of Song, the liquor tax revenue was 786 million strings of coins; during the reign of Emperor Xuande of the Ming Dynasty, the liquor tax was 5 strings of coins.
Of course, these are only on the surface. Outside the accounts, it is difficult to generalize the Song Dynasty's checkpoints and layers of commercial taxes, the levies and extortions by clerks, and the Ming Dynasty's local levies and taxes by vassal kings. However, the fact that the amounts differed so much is still incredible.
Mr. Guo Zhengzhong, a modern scholar, once commented that the productivity of the Song Dynasty did not change in essence. In essence, it was still a feudal country based on agriculture. It was just that it intervened in commercial activities to a high degree through official means, thus pushing the official economy to its peak. It can also be called the nationalization of the economy in the feudal era.
Of course, we all know what happened later. After the Jingkang Incident, the already imperfect Song Dynasty suffered another setback. The cost of living continued to rise, but there was no reduction in taxes at all. Ultimately, the relatively healthy economy became a disguised means of exploitation.
It was probably for this reason that after Zhu Yuanzhang established the Ming Dynasty, he believed that this was the cause of the Song Dynasty's demise, and he directly banned the taxation and monopoly, and did not even use it as a supplementary means of taxation.
In a sense, Zhu's decision did waste the experience accumulated in economic exploration during the Song Dynasty for hundreds of years, which is a pity.
I have a short business trip to fly at 7 o'clock in the morning, and I don't know when I will be back in the evening, so I will just give you a brief update for now.
Just one more thing to add. I just got home at 11:05. I will update tomorrow. I can’t get up today.
