Chapter 1003: Now that you’ve entered this door, you still want to escape?
It’s just that the guests that Ancient One entertained, whether it was the God-King Odin or those dimensional demons, were unable to experience the taste of it.
Strange didn't understand, but he could roughly tell that this seemed to be an expensive item like aged wine?
But he didn't know how to appreciate it at all.
"Excuse me, you once cured a man named Pangborn, a paralytic, didn't you?"
Strange got straight to the point, his voice carrying a hint of urgency. He had come all the way here to find a cure for paralysis, and the Ancient One was his only clue.
Gu Yi nodded slightly, a faint smile appearing on his face.
"That's it."
Her answers were brief and vague, and she didn't seem to intend to explain the whole process in detail.
Although Ancient One is compassionate, her personal power seems so small in the vast human world. Even she cannot save every suffering soul.
Kamar-Taj's involvement in Pangborn's life was not out of simple compassion, but had a deeper purpose - to lead Strange, a talented but troubled doctor, onto this unusual path.
Strange was excited, as if he saw the dawn of hope. However, the next words of Ancient One left him confused.
"It wasn't him who healed himself, it was me who convinced him that he could go."
There was a hint of mystery and depth in Master Ancient One's words, as if he was hinting at something.
Strange was stunned. He couldn't understand such mysterious statement.
"You wouldn't call that therapy?"
He asked doubtfully. In his opinion, psychotherapy might help patients build confidence, but it would never allow paralyzed patients to stand up again.
Master Ancient One smiled slightly. She picked up the teacup and gently stirred the tea inside, as if she was thinking about how to explain to this Western doctor who was bound by common sense these things that were beyond his understanding.
“When you connect a nerve, are you healing the nerve, or is the limb healing itself?” she asked rhetorically.
Strange was stunned. He had never thought about this question before.
In his understanding, scalpels and microscopes are tools for curing diseases, and he is the one who masters these tools. However, Master Gu Yi's words made him start to re-examine his medical concepts.
“The body can be healed in a variety of ways.”
Master Ancient One continued, her voice calm and firm, as if she was stating an indisputable fact.
“It’s not just physical treatment, it also includes spiritual guidance, energy flow, and even the understanding of the laws of the universe.”
Strange was confused. He tried to grasp the key information in the Ancient One's words, but it seemed that he was always missing something.
He began to doubt whether he could really understand the medical mysteries of this mysterious oriental world.
"Are you talking about cell regeneration?"
Strange suddenly had an idea and felt that he had found a possible explanation.
"This is very cutting-edge medical technology. Is that why you want to conduct research here because there is no supervision from the Medical Association?"
The Ancient One shook her head, a hint of disappointment flashing in her eyes. She had hoped that Strange could comprehend a deeper truth, but it was clear that he was still bound by the framework of common sense and science.
"Cell regeneration is just one of them, but not all." She said slowly, "What I pursue is a higher level of healing - healing the soul."
Strange was stunned. He had never heard of the term "healing the soul".
In his world, disease is disease, which needs to be cured by medicine and surgery, while the soul is a topic in the realm of religion and philosophy, which has nothing to do with him as a surgeon.
Ancient One sighed softly. She knew that for someone like Strange, who was deeply influenced by the modern medical system, it was not easy to understand the healing methods that transcend the material level. She tried to guide Strange to break out of the framework of conventional thinking.
But Strange was clearly not ready to accept such a concept. He confidently believed that he already understood the current situation: "So, you have mastered a superb medical technology, which may violate existing medical management regulations. That is why you chose to conduct research here to avoid the supervision of the Medical Association."
His reasoning was logically clear, but it completely deviated from the true meaning that Ancient One wanted to convey.
Ancient One frowned slightly. She understood that Strange's misunderstanding stemmed from his fear of the unknown and his obsession with rules.
She tried to explain: "Mr. Strange, you may have misunderstood me. What I am pursuing is not to evade regulation, but to explore a completely new treatment method that may go beyond existing medical knowledge. This method is about..."
"About what?"
Strange interrupted her, his tone somewhat provocative.
"Illegal human medical experiments? Does this poor, backward, chaotic place just happen to provide you with a large amount of experimental materials that are not protected by law?"
His voice echoed in the empty room, with a hint of blame and dissatisfaction.
Ancient One shook her head. She knew that Strange's speculations were not based on the doctor's moral concerns, but stemmed from his deep desire for power and fear of the unknown.
He tried to control the situation through accusations and threats, as if this would give him the upper hand in this unknown game.
"How is the research on this technology going?"
Strange asked eagerly, his eyes gleaming with greed.
“Have we made any breakthroughs in methods to allow nerve cells to repair themselves?”
Ancient One smiled awkwardly. She found that the conversation between herself and Strange was like a pantomime. They were both speaking their lines but were completely on different channels.
She took a deep breath and decided not to continue this meaningless conversation.
"Mr. Strange,"
Gu Yi's voice became firm and gentle.
"I know it may be difficult for you to understand, but I must tell you that what I pursue is not just a technological breakthrough. I try to use the power of the soul to better understand life and heal the body. This is an exploration beyond the material level. It is about the inner human being and the power of the spirit."
Strange's expression froze instantly, and a trace of confusion and uneasiness flashed in his eyes. He began to doubt whether he really understood this place, this person, and the research they were doing.
He tried to fit all this into the medical framework he was familiar with, but found that no matter how hard he tried, he could not find a suitable explanation.
