Chapter 661 Take a Break Occasionally

Chapter 661 Taking a Break Occasionally

They had never met, didn't know what the other person looked like, didn't know their name, and didn't even have any memory of them, but Han Fei felt that the person was very important to him.

"She would die if she met me, but she keeps looking for me?"

Han Fei looked at the meat on his plate, a mix of emotions surging within him. He then took out the paper figure's eyes again: "You should still remember what she looked like, right? Can you describe her to me?"

“Beautiful, dangerous, and unique…” The disfigured man lowered his head: “I actually never dared to look at her face, only her hands. They were the most beautiful hands I had ever seen, and also the most skilled hands at using knives.”

"Is that all the information you have?" Han Fei looked at the mangled body reflected in the paper figure's eyes. "She and I should be friends. If you have any difficulties, you can tell me, and perhaps I can help you."

Li Guo'er and Xiao Jia, on the other side of the table, never expected Han Fei to say that. They had come to investigate and asked for his help, but Han Fei suddenly took the initiative, as if he were the real owner of the room.

"No need." The disfigured man glanced intentionally or unintentionally toward the bedroom; he didn't want anyone else interfering in his "marriage."

“You have your choices, and I understand that. If you encounter any problems in the future, you can call this number.” Han Fei waved to Xiao Jia, who was balding. Xiao Jia hesitated for a while before taking out his phone and exchanging contact information with the disfigured man.

Han Fei's identity is sensitive, Li Guo'er is wanted by the police, and Xiao Jia is the only normal person in the team, and only his mobile phone can be used normally.

"Don't keep making me contact them. If my phone is full of people like this, I won't dare answer the phone at night," Xiao Jia muttered softly.

"There's one more thing I need to trouble you with." Han Fei placed the paper figure's eyes in front of the disfigured man: "Have you seen the mangled body reflected in the paper figure's eyes inside this building?"

"Paper figures?" The disfigured man's eyes turned strange. "Perhaps you can go to the ninth floor and take a look. There lives a paper craftsman who makes white goods there. He used to have all sorts of paper figures in his house."

"Thank you." Han Fei didn't ask any more questions about marrying a ghost. "Can we keep in touch? My name is Han Fei, what's yours?"

"My surname is Fu. My wife and I used to run a cooked food shop in the city. Later, the shop caught fire, and I was severely burned." The disfigured man recalled the tragedy of the past, and the scars on his face began to twitch slightly.

"You're also surnamed Fu?" Han Fei realized that many people he met around him had the surname Fu, and these people were all connected to him in some way: "Could the person who killed me also have the surname Fu?"

Finding no other clues in the room, Han Fei and his two companions walked out, with Xiao Jia, who was following at the back, letting out a long sigh of relief.

“His house was really creepy. I felt much warmer after coming out. Let’s not run around anymore. Let’s hurry home and hide while there aren’t many people outside.”

"Let's go to the ninth floor first. Once we know the building well, we'll feel more at ease coming back at night." Han Fei took the paper doll's eyes and headed upstairs.

"You two are acting like private detectives while being wanted criminals, I'm really impressed!" Seeing that he couldn't dissuade Han Fei, Xiao Jia had no choice but to follow him.

The higher Han Fei climbed, the more uncomfortable he felt. He felt as if something was watching him, but he couldn't pinpoint where that gaze was hiding.

"This building is so creepy during the day, how terrifying must it be at night?" Li Guo'er thought Building 11 was the scariest, but now she realized she was completely wrong.

"Terrifying as it may be, this place does give me a homey feeling, especially the room where Dean Fu is staying." Han Fei lowered his voice: "Dean Fu and Chef Fu seem to be lying. There's a lie mixed in with nine truths, or they might even be telling the whole truth but hiding some details."

"How did you tell?"

"My intuition tells me my home is in this building. It used to be the safest place for me, but because of these outsiders, it's become a dangerous trap." Han Fei took a deep breath, feeling the fear rising from the depths of his heart: "I've died in this building more than once, but I still come back here. I feel like I'm the woman who keeps looking for me. We're both doing the same thing, exchanging death for some kind of change."

"I don't understand what you're saying, but it seems to make some sense." Xiao Jia had given up trying to communicate with Han Fei, but Li Guo'er was lost in thought.

The three quickly arrived at the ninth floor. The door to room 1093 was open, and various paper items were displayed in front of the security door. It seemed that the people living here were selling items used for the dead in the residential building.

"A dead man doing business in a neighborhood where living people live? And the neighbors haven't kicked him out? I don't know who's more carefree." Xiao Jia found it outrageous. If there were such a family in his building, he would probably move out overnight.

"I sell paper goods here because there are people who need them," an aged voice came from inside the house. An old woman with a wrinkled face leaned out with her cane. "You don't seem to be here to buy anything; you must be here to ask for advice, right?"

"Grandma, I want to buy a paper figure." Han Fei didn't bother beating around the bush: "Can I go inside and take a look?"

“Young man, you can’t just buy paper figures like that.” The old lady didn’t move aside and stood at the door: “If you’re asking about funerals, come back tonight. If you’re asking about anything else, please leave. My husband just went to bed and it’s not convenient for him right now.”

"Inconvenient?" Han Fei looked into the house, which was filled with all sorts of paper figures. If someone passed by at night, they would probably be startled. "Is the paper craftsman the neighbors are talking about your husband?"

"Yes and no," the old lady shook her head and smiled, her expression kind and gentle.

Just as Han Fei was hesitating whether to force his way in, police sirens suddenly sounded outside the residential area. Li Guo'er's face instantly turned pale, and she coughed softly.

"Since the old man is already asleep, we'll come back in a few days." Han Fei politely said goodbye to the old lady, and the three of them walked downstairs together.

"Our whereabouts should not have been exposed, don't panic." Han Fei said calmly, "There is only one entrance and exit to the community. If it is blocked, we will jump out of the window of a resident's home."

“Okay.” Li Guo’er was more nervous than anyone else: “We have to get out of here quickly. If the police impound the taxi, it will be a big problem. After all, ten people have died on it.”

Upon arriving on the first floor, the three realized that the police had a very clear objective: to head directly to Building 11, which was located in the very center.

"Has the human trafficking case been solved? Why did they go to Building 11? Did the group of game participants report it to the police? Was this part of F's plan?"

While the police were mobilizing officers to enter the building, Han Fei and his two companions took the opportunity to leave, got into a taxi, and fled.

They were on tenterhooks the whole way, but thankfully the police didn't catch up. Around 9 a.m., they returned to Xiao Jia's home.

After a whole night of turmoil, all three of them were exhausted. What happened that night was more complicated than what many people experience in a year.

"I'm going to sleep now, you guys do as you please." Xiao Jia seemed resigned to his fate; he knew that once he was on this pirate ship, there was no way he could get off so easily.

"Wait a minute." Han Fei called out to Xiao Jia, "I think it's best if you don't leave our sight and stay alone in a room."

"What? Are you afraid I'll call the police?" Xiao Jia felt a little wronged. He had been implicated in helping Li Guo'er. To put it nicely, he had participated in hiding the body without knowing it; to put it bluntly, he was now an accomplice.

“You saw a lot of scary things last night. What I want to tell you is that once you get entangled with those things, it will be very difficult to get away. They can appear at any time. Maybe when you wake up, they will be standing by your bed. Or if you turn over in bed, their faces will be right behind you.”

"Brother, stop talking, I was wrong." Xiao Jia's face was droopy, and a few more strands of his already thinning hair fell out.

“The three of us should stay together, never out of each other’s sight, and protect each other. Only in this way can we survive in this city.” Han Fei patted Xiao Jia on the shoulder: “After we complete the game in the dark, I won’t take any reward. You and Li Guo’er can split it equally.”

"Why are you just like my old boss? Always making empty promises?" Xiao Jia muttered, but his actions betrayed him. He hugged his blanket and lay down on the living room floor: "Xiao Guo, you can sleep on the sofa."

Ignoring Xiao Jia and Li Guo'er, Han Fei spread out the bedding at the doorway. He seemed to have often slept on the floor before, and even sleeping on the ground felt very familiar to him.

Around 4 PM, the three woke up one after another, ate a little something, and then Han Fei took over Xiao Jia's computer.

He searched online for information related to Xingfu Community, but strangely, much of the information seemed to be blocked, with nothing unusual about it.

“There’s clearly something wrong with that neighborhood. The police went there this morning, how could they not find anything related to it?”

After sitting in front of the computer for a long time, Han Fei suddenly saw Happiness Community in a rental post.

The poster was a girl who asked for help on a forum on how to get her landlord to refund her rent. She was terminating her lease early because she kept hearing strange noises in the room, couldn't sleep well, and often had nightmares.

In the comments section of the post, some people offered advice to the girl, some asked her if she needed to share an apartment, and others suggested that she call the police directly.

Most people were joking, but to everyone's surprise, the post disappeared not long after.

"Running to rent a room in Xingfu Community? This girl is really bold." Han Fei remembered the girl's ID and sent her a private message after the post disappeared. He said he was willing to pay a high price for the girl to sublet the house to him, but on the condition that the girl tell him what was unusual about the room.

To show his sincerity, Han Fei also told the girl that he was willing to pay one-third of the rent first and hoped that she could leave her bank account information.

After a while, the girl sent a link, and Han Fei directly asked Xiao Jia to transfer money, leaving Xiao Jia's phone number.

Influenced by the money, the girl believed in Han Fei's sincerity and began to communicate with him.

"My surname is Jia, you can just call me Mr. Jia. Can you tell me what strange things happened in that house?"

"Hello Mr. Jia, my name is Xiao You. Thank you for your help, but I sincerely advise you not to rent an apartment in that complex." The girl's voice came from the phone: "I live on the seventh floor of Building 1 in Xingfu Complex. I chose that place entirely because I was scammed by the previous tenant. That damn landlord said he wouldn't return my deposit until someone else moved in!"

The girl was kind-hearted and told Han Fei the truth directly.

"I just want to know what you heard in that room?"

"It sounds like footsteps," the girl said, though she wasn't entirely sure.

In the stairwell?

"No, it's in my room."

There was a moment of silence between them, then Han Fei spoke up: "Are you still in that room? I think you'd better come out and call me."

"There's no need for that. Actually, I'm not really sure either. It's just that the landlord's attitude makes me very uncomfortable. I feel like I've been scammed."

"It's absolutely necessary! Pack your things and leave the neighborhood now. We'll talk again when we meet. If you think I'm a scammer, I can send you more money. Also, let me tell you, many rooms in Happiness Neighborhood are haunted houses where people have died." Han Fei said this to save the girl. He himself didn't dare to spend the night in Happiness Neighborhood, let alone an ordinary girl.

"What kind of scammer sends money before we even meet? Where are we supposed to meet then..." The girl's words were cut off before she could finish.

Hearing the busy tone on the other end of the phone, Han Fei looked up at Li Guo'er and Xiao Jia: "Let's get ready too."

"What are you preparing? Which neighborhood are we going to?" Xiao Jia's legs went weak, and his vision went black.

"I want to see what my happiness looks like." Han Fei closed the webpage, his gaze lingering for a second on the Plants vs. Zombies retro game icon, before getting up and leaving the room.

……

"Why is there no sound? The signal is terrible in this crappy place. I haven't even told them where to meet yet!" Xiao You tried calling again, but couldn't get through. It seemed like the line was always busy. "This is really strange."

After trying for a long time without success, Xiao You sat on the edge of the bed in frustration, her mind filled with Han Fei's warning to leave immediately.

"Could it really be a haunted house? He doesn't sound like he's joking. I'd better pack my things and leave quickly. I'll just stay out tonight." Xiao You put her phone on the bedside table and hurriedly organized her cosmetics. As she fiddled with the bottles and jars, she suddenly heard footsteps in the hallway. Someone was running upstairs from downstairs.

"That startled me, it was just the sound outside." Just as she was trying to reassure herself, Xiao You realized that the footsteps had stopped, and it seemed that the person outside had stopped at her door.

Mustering her courage, Xiao You walked towards the living room, not daring to make a sound. She peered through the peephole and saw that the hallway was empty, with no one in sight.

"No, I have to leave before it gets dark." Xiao You ran back to her bedroom. She picked up her phone to call Han Fei again when she suddenly realized something.

Her phone's automatic screen lock time is 30 seconds. It has definitely been more than 30 seconds since she put her phone down, but not only was her phone screen unlocked, her photo album was also opened.

Looking down at the selfie on her phone, Xiao You panicked a little. When she was scared, the first person she thought of was her mother, so she immediately took out her phone and made a video call to her.

The video call was answered after only two rings, and a middle-aged woman looked at Xiao You with a loving expression: "Baby, why did you suddenly decide to video call me?"

"Mom, please don't hang up! Something's happened here." Xiao You didn't have time to explain. She quickly put on her coat, stuffed the important things into her handbag, and ran towards the living room.

"Honey, what happened? Don't always only tell me good news and not bad news. Tell Mom! Do you need Mom to come over to you now?" The middle-aged woman on the video call was very worried about Xiao You.

"Just stay with me, I'm a little scared to be alone." Xiao You held up her phone in one hand, then used the hand holding her bag to open the door.

"Alone? Wasn't that your boyfriend standing in the living room just now?"
