Chapter 695 A Mirror of Humanity
Chapter 695 A Mirror of Humanity
The resurrection ritual uses eight tools, among which the mirror with the birth date and time written on it is the most crucial. It reflects the past, separates dreams from reality, and has yin on one side and yang on the other. It is present in all resurrection rituals.
"Why is that child in the mirror?" Xiao Jia sidled up to Han Fei, trying to cling to his old boss.
"It is said that when people die, a part of their soul remains in the mirror they often looked in during their lifetime. This may be the same principle." Ah Chong stood on the other side of Han Fei. Ever since he saw Han Fei's arm full of scars, he felt that Han Fei was a kindred spirit and became Han Fei's follower.
Han Fei did not answer their questions, but simply took the red rope and walked forward.
"The plastic surgery hospital has been transformed into an altar, with eight buildings corresponding to eight different instruments. Dream is to be resurrected here..."
Han Fei originally thought that Fu Sheng was the choice of the three managers of the park, but now he realized that Meng was also eyeing Fu Sheng. Fu Sheng should be the "product" of the compromise and calculation of all the managers of the park.
A large-scale collapse occurred in the basement of Building No. 7. Du Jing has been in charge of the repair project, but unfortunately she has long been controlled by her dream, and the entire hospital has been transformed into the way her dream wanted it to be.
The corpses filling the deep pit formed "Building No. 8," and terror, despair, and negative emotions continued to ferment, seemingly corresponding to the deeper world.
Above Building 8 is the clean and tidy Building 7, representing healing, hope, and death.
Recovered patients regain their smiles and leave with their families, while those who fail to be resuscitated are transferred underground, their gradually cooling bodies becoming bricks in the construction of the deep world.
Han Fei climbed up, stepping on the corpses. He grabbed the black hair hanging in the air and, as if rock climbing, arrived at the place where Building 7 and "Building 8" were connected.
Taking a deep breath, Han Fei ignored the stench in the air and dug his fingers into the corpse, slowly approaching the mirror.
The young man trapped in the mirror heard the noise. With his back to the mirror, he curled up in the corner, hugged his legs tightly, and buried his head between his knees.
He dared not look at the outside world, nor did he have the courage to step out of that mirror.
"Fu Sheng?"
Han Fei stopped in front of the huge mirror. He looked at the young man in the mirror, and the fragmented memories in his mind gradually pieced together, restoring scene after scene.
The young man in the mirror was just like the Fu Sheng in his memory; everything seemed to have returned to the time when they first met.
Fu Sheng locked himself in his room, refusing to communicate with anyone. The world seemed to be full of malice towards him; he was lonely and in pain.
"Fu Sheng!" Han Fei shouted at the mirror, but the young man remained unmoved and didn't even raise his head.
The young man huddled in the corner of the room was the Fu Sheng from Han Fei's memory, not those fragments of Fu Sheng's memories.
"You should still remember me! We ate together and fed the cats in that little park."
Han Fei's hand touched the mirror, but the cold, hard mirror was like an unbreakable cage, and Han Fei's voice could not be heard.
“What’s preserved in the mirror is the soul guide. Dream can manipulate that young man through the remnant soul in the mirror and slowly achieve his goal of controlling him.” The injured Yan Le suddenly spoke up. Yan Le’s mother wanted to show her value: “Dream has prepared eight bodies for himself. Yan Le and Fu Sheng are both his choices. However, Fu Sheng’s situation is very special. The other managers also value him more.”
How did you know all this?
“I saw him in the Paradise at night. Both the ‘human’ and the ‘ghost’ wanted to instill their ideas into that child, making him the new master of the Paradise.” Yan Le’s expression was ferocious. Her mother was still controlling her body. “The Paradise family compound and the plastic surgery hospital are two other places in the city where the Dream’s body is hidden. If you want to destroy the Dream’s ritual, you must destroy all the bodies.”
It is said that a cunning rabbit has three burrows, and Meng prepared eight escape routes for herself.
"It seems time is tight." Nodding, Han Fei asked Xiao Jia to bring Fu Tian over, and together they placed the young Fu Tian in front of the mirror.
Before Han Fei could speak, Fu Tian pressed his face against the mirror, calling out his brother's name. He was just a few years old, separated from his mother and hanging out with a group of desperados. He could usually remain calm, but now, upon seeing his family, he immediately revealed his vulnerable side.
Fu Tian cried. His older brother, whom he regarded as a role model, was locked in the mirror and looked extremely miserable.
"Mom has been looking for you! She even lied to me and said you went to study in another city! She calls every night and tries to gather clues. She really misses you!"
The childish voice trembled with tears. The young man in the mirror twitched his ears slightly, but his body remained unresponsive.
"elder brother!"
As Fu Tian's voice grew louder, the silence of the hospital was broken, and it seemed as if insects were crawling on the corpses that were being used as bricks.
Her long, black hair swayed slightly. There was no wind on the ground, but her hair curled and turned, like insects being pulled out of the soil.
“Dream sets traps near every resurrection ritual. The trap on Yan Le is the butterfly that can enter the dream. I don’t know what the traps here are either, so you’d better be careful.” After Yan Le’s mother finished speaking, she grabbed the arm of the previous brain and gave him a look, signaling him to prepare to retreat.
In Yan Le's mother's world, nothing is more important than her daughter; her daughter has become her obsession.
Young Fu Tian didn't understand any of this. He was filled with fear and anxiety the whole way. When he finally saw his brother whom he hadn't seen in a long time, all the grievances and unease in his heart burst forth. He wanted to wake his brother up.
After their father left, the older brother became the pillar of the family. They agreed to take care of their mother together and try to make a living, but the older brother ran away on his own and disappeared without a trace.
He didn't understand, he couldn't figure it out, but he didn't dare to ask so as not to upset his mother.
“Your brother has his own reasons. He chose to be human over ghosts, and he chose the city over home. From this perspective, he can’t really be considered a bad person. At least compared to me, he’s more like a good person.” This memory shrine is meant to recreate everything that happened in the past before Han Fei’s eyes, and it can be considered Fu Sheng’s last attempt to persuade Han Fei.
"It has already been proven to be the wrong path, and there is no need to go through it again. I also know that it will be difficult to find a new path and that I will face obstacles from both old and new forces, but there are many things in this world that cannot be abandoned just because of difficulties."
The "Building No. 8," built from piles of corpses, began to mutate. The corpses, which should have been dead, were pierced by strands of black hair. Their chests rose and fell slightly, and when they connected into a large area, it was as if the entire building was breathing.
Taking out the Rebirth Slaughtering Knife, Han Fei told Fu Tian to turn back. His idea was simple: if the dream had imprisoned Fu Sheng's remnant soul in the mirror, then he would cleave the mirror open and rescue him.
"The more enemies I kill, the sharper my rebirth will become. The dream of building the mirror has created boundless slaughter. I should be able to cut through what he left behind."
The changes in "Building No. 8" began to accelerate. All the patients and medical staff in the hospital gathered here, in a frighteningly large number. Even if they all eventually turned into the lowest level of obsession, they could kill everyone except Han Fei without any effort.
"Han Fei! Let's get out of here first!" Xiao Jia was closest to Han Fei, and his experiences these past few days were more terrifying than any nightmare he had ever had in his life.
"Take Fu Tian with you, and you two go back to the surface first!"
"What about you?"
"Don't worry about me!" Han Fei gripped the sword with both hands, standing together with all his companions on the hilts of the swords, their minds focused and their wills aligned.
cut!
A dazzling light flashed in the dark, sunless underground building, and the most beautiful part of humanity turned into a blade, slashing at the mirror surface.
With his life hanging in the balance, Han Fei swung his sword with all his might, but the sound of the mirror shattering as he expected did not come.
Looking up in surprise, Han Fei discovered that the mirror surface was like flowing water. When the Rebirth Blade was slashed into the mirror, it could not destroy the mirror. Instead, it showed signs of merging with it.
Just as the Rebirth Knife pierced the mirror, unfamiliar faces appeared on its surface. Their faces showed no pain or sorrow, only faint smiles and a sense of relief.
"The Rebirth Blade can't cut through it? What is this mirror made of?"
With a single slash, Han Fei caused all the corpses that made up "Building No. 8" to turn into zombies. They became inexplicably angry, as if someone had shattered their last remaining hope.
The eyes on the corpse wall slowly opened, blood seeped from the scabbed wounds, large patches of lividity fell off, and pairs of vicious eyes stared at Han Fei, who was holding a knife.
"I think I understand the butterfly's trick now." Han Fei figured out the key in a very short time: "Dreams are good at manipulating people's hearts. They can weave nightmares or beautiful dreams. They must have stripped away all the beautiful emotions in the hearts of those patients and doctors and used other people's hopes and memories to make a mirror."
"This mirror hanging above the hellish morgue is both a cage imprisoning Fu Sheng's remnant soul and a repository of the most beautiful obsessions of all the dead. If anyone damages the mirror, they are destroying the beautiful memories of all the dead, which will naturally provoke their anger and make them act recklessly."
Dreams inadvertently create a delicate balance, with the human world above and the deeper world below, the two worlds connected by the most beautiful memories of humanity, where hope and despair coexist.
What's even more amazing is that all this beauty has nothing to do with Fu Sheng. The world he wants to save doesn't love him and leaves him with the deepest despair. This may also be one of the reasons why that remnant soul is trapped in the mirror and has no response to the outside world.
"Dreams extract everyone's beautiful memories and turn them into mirrors that imprison the soul, immersing people in them and making it impossible for them to leave. But I let everyone's last remaining humanity become a blade that can cut through all evil."
Han Fei touched the mirror with his palm and stared at the young man huddled in the corner in the mirror, as if he had returned to the previous world of the shrine.
"You've endured far too much; perhaps this is the fate chosen by the black box."
Han Fei wanted to convey his message, but the corpses in the entire building were turning into zombies. If he didn't leave soon, even Xu Qin would have a hard time protecting him.
"I think I've forgotten something..." As Han Fei was about to turn around, he noticed out of the corner of his eye that there was a strap around the young man's neck, which looked like the strap of a phone case.
Upon closer inspection, the young man was curled up, and it seemed as if something was pressing down between his chest and knees.
He pursed his lips, recalling the scene of his last meeting with Fu Sheng. After hesitating for a moment, he called out to Xiao You, "Give me your phone!"
Xiao You's mother brought over the blood-stained phone, and Han Fei tried his best to recall that last number.
As he pieced together the fragments of memory, he opened his phone and pressed down on a series of numbers.
The call went through quickly.
The familiar ringtone of a cell phone sounded simultaneously inside and outside the mirror. Fu Sheng, who had been huddled in the corner with his head down, stirred slightly. For the first time, he reacted to the outside world, slowly raising his head. His numb eyes saw the caller ID on the phone.
After a brief moment of confusion, his eyes changed.
He stood up, holding his phone in both hands, and looked around. In that moment, he became like a normal person again.
The transformation of corpses in "Building No. 8" has begun. Han Fei's legs were grabbed by hands that reached out from the corpse wall, but he showed no intention of dodging. He stared straight at the young man in the mirror and then put his phone to his ear.
The phone kept ringing. Fu Sheng stared at the screen for a long time before finally pressing the answer button.
The sound of him inhaling came through the microphone. After hesitating for a long time, Fu Sheng said something.
"is it you?"
"it's me."
The phone screen became blurry.
"Where are you?"
"I've been watching you from outside the mirror."
Fu Sheng, holding the phone, stepped out of the darkness. He didn't know where the mirror was; the world in the mirror seemed to be pitch black, without any light.
"It's okay, don't rush. Just do as I say, keep moving forward, yes, keep moving forward."
Han Fei's voice came from the phone. Just like before, the young man walked step by step to the mirror with Han Fei's help, and his hand touched the mirror.
Are you outside?
"Yes, we're separated by a mirror. I'm looking at you, but you can't see me. But even when you're in darkness, I still want to cheer you up."
Fragments of memory unfolded in his mind, and with just a few simple words, Han Fei was already certain that the Fu Sheng in front of him was the Fu Sheng he had met before, and also the original Fu Sheng in this shrine's memory world.
"Can't you see it?" Fu Sheng pressed his hand against the mirror. "I can see all the ghosts, but I can't see you and Mom."
“Take a step back first. I want to stab my knife into the mirror. See if you can grab it.” Han Fei was not the kind of person who would give up easily. He raised the Rebirth Blade again and swung it at the mirror with all his companions. The bright and dazzling blade seemed to be the helping hand that everyone extended to Fu Sheng.
