S is the abbreviation of the English word Severity, which refers to the severity. Severity is a subjectively estimated value, which is the impact of the failure that the customer (next user) or end user will perceive.

O stands for Occurrence, which refers to the frequency of occurrence, sometimes called likelihood, and is a numerical subjective estimate of the likelihood that a failure mode will occur during the design life, or during the production process.

D stands for Detection, which refers to detection, sometimes called effectiveness.It is a numerical value of a control's effectiveness, a subjective estimate of the cause or failure mode that is detected prior to sale.

Each item of SOD is assigned a value from 1 to 10, and the higher the value, the greater the risk.

As a general rule, any failure mode that results in a 9 or 10 will be the first priority, and a corrective and preventive action must be taken to bring this down.

In addition to individual assignments, RPN (Risk Priority Number) is also a very critical risk level assessment indicator.

RPN is the product of the frequency, severity and detection level of an event. It is called the risk coefficient or risk priority number. The larger the value, the more serious the potential problem. It is used to measure possible process defects so that possible preventive measures can be taken. Reduce critical process variations and make the process more reliable.Process corrections should first focus on those areas of greatest concern and risk.

The process of FMEA analysis is the process of continuously calculating the RPN value. By taking corrective and preventive measures, the value is finally controlled within a reasonable range, thereby achieving the purpose of risk control.
