Namtso is one of the "three holy lakes" of Tibet. The so-called three holy lakes of Tibet include Mapam Yumtso, Namtso and Yamdrok Yumtso.

Later, as the climate of the Tibetan Plateau gradually became drier, the area of ​​Namtso was greatly reduced. There are now 8 to 10 ancient lake rock lines, the highest of which is about 80 meters away from the current lake surface.
