The monarch of a country cannot obtain the rare treasures of the previous dynasty. Every time Taizong thought about this, he became depressed.

It is said that Wang Xizhi himself cherished the "Preface to the Lanting Collection" written by "divine assistance" and regarded it as a family heirloom.

And how was this unique work in the history of calligraphy written?
This will bring the time back to the third day of March in the ninth year of Yonghe in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (353 AD).

Wang Xizhi, who was the internal historian of Kuaiji at that time, and 41 people including his friends Xie An and Sun Chuo, drank wine and wrote poems at the Lanting Yaji in Shanyin, Kuaiji.

Wang Xizhi compiled these poems into a collection and wrote a preface to describe the incident of drinking Qushui and express his inner feelings caused by it.

This preface is the "Preface to the Lanting Collection", later known as the "Lanting Preface".

Wang Xizhi wrote it impromptu while half drunk and half awake. His calligraphy is extremely natural and smooth, and his posture is flying.

It is said that Wang Xizhi wrote the manuscript after he sobered up the next day. No matter how he wrote it, it was not as good as the draft of "Lanting Preface".

Wang Xizhi knew that he might never be able to write better in the future, so he cherished this work very much, treated it as a family heirloom, and gave it to his son Wang Xianzhi.

After that, this family heirloom was passed down all the way in the Wang family until it was passed down to the 7th generation Sun Zhiyong.
