Chapter 1236: Farewell at the City Gate

Long before the Mobei delegation left Beijing, the emperor ordered that a notice filled with Mobei's evil deeds be posted all over Tianchu. Even the other three countries knew about the notice.

Some time ago, with the emperor's instruction, many unsolved mysteries in Tianchu and several murders and arson cases in Tai'an City were all blamed on Mobei and posted in the form of a notice.

Ordinary people regarded the notices posted by the government as the golden rule and believed whatever was written. The notices posted one after another made the people, who already hated Mobei, hate it even more.

Out of this hatred, upon learning that the Dingbei Army was leaving for battle today, all the citizens who had time came to see them off. They were all in high spirits, and the crowds were so angry that they chased after the Gu family members and shouted:

General Gu, capture Lu Sang again. General Gu, defeat Mobei and return in triumph.

The prince and several other officials who were seeing them off together were all troubled when they saw the people's growing respect and enthusiasm for the Gu family.

All the Gu and Lin families were present, except for Lin Wanrong who was waiting to be married and could not go out, even the old lady who was not allowed to travel far, and Lin Siran and his family from the second house came to see them off.

The Xiangwang family of three, Feng Sinian and his sister, and Wang Huizhao, who had not been seen for a long time, also came with their parents.

Princess Yanling already admired the Gu family for defending their country, and now that she was married to the Gu family, she regarded them as her closest relatives. Facing the separation, her eyes were red and she held the hands of Princess Xiang and Lin Jinyan tightly.

Gu Hongzhang had been a soldier for half his life and knew best how dangerous the battlefield was. Although he had a long talk with his son and grandson last night, he was still worried when it came time to say goodbye.

But he was a general who defended his country and the backbone of the Dingbei Army. He could not show his reluctance, nor could he let the descendants of other generals escape. He even instructed them to be loyal and brave in killing the enemy on the battlefield.

He raised his hands and tightly grasped the shoulders of his son and grandson, with all kinds of tenderness and vicissitudes in his heart, which finally turned into one sentence:
"Wait for your safe return."

Gu Qingyun and Gu Ruizhou bid farewell to the princes and officials, looking at their loved ones reluctantly. While the prince and the others were talking to Gu Qingyun, Gu Ruizhou moved to the side of his brothers and sisters, looking at them one by one with a smile:

"Chen'er, I'll leave the mansion to you. Take good care of Grandfather, Mother, and Yanling. Control your temper. Think more and don't be impatient."

"An'er, you are valued by His Majesty and have a great reputation. You must not be proud and complacent. Learn more and observe more."

Gu Yichen and Lin Jinan nodded heavily with forced smiles, and told their brother to be careful at all times.

Gu Ruizhou patted the two of them, then turned to look at Chu Chengping:
"When I come back, Your Highness must make up for the wedding banquet with Wanrong. Wanrong is shy, so I hope Your Highness will take good care of her."

After Chu Chengping agreed, Gu Ruizhou came to Lin Jinyan. Even though his sister smiled calmly, he still saw a hint of worry in her eyes.

"Brother, take the things I sent you. Be careful on the battlefield. I will wait for you to come back safely."

Thinking of the heavy responsibility entrusted to his sister, Gu Ruizhou's gentle smile was covered with heartache. He wanted to touch his sister's head to comfort her like he did when they were children, but thinking of their ages and the countless eyes around them, he endured it:

"Don't worry, I will be careful at all times, and you should take care of yourself too."

Master Ran, wearing the uniform of the Dingbei Army, was hiding in the army. He glanced at the pale and thin man beside him, then turned his head and looked at the brother and sister who were saying goodbye with a burning gaze. (End of this chapter)
