Chapter 45 Law Enforcement Equipment
Chapter 45 Law Enforcement Equipment
"Ding ding ding..."
Old Theon, a bunch of keys hanging from his index finger, led Milo through the corridor into the armory, puffing out clouds of smoke along the way.
"There aren't actually that many types of law enforcement weapons systems in active service, but there's no explicit rule that law enforcement officers can only use active-duty weapons, you know what I mean."
After the heavy armory door was pushed open, a variety of cold and hot weapons came into view, hanging full of shelves and walls.
On the left shelf are various old-fashioned pistols, rifles and other firearms, while on the right is a series of cold, hard blades.
All weapons are engraved with the totem of the law enforcement system's judgment sickle and its corresponding number.
According to the standardized equipment requirements for law enforcement officers, each officer is entitled to one cold weapon and one firearm.
“Normally, unless there is a major violent incident, no one would choose a bulky thing like a rifle as a personal weapon. The original design of the black trench coat was to conceal the weapons carried by law enforcement officers to the greatest extent. It would be silly for you to carry a rifle that is more than a meter long, right?”
Old Theon stubbed out his cigarette at the door before entering the armory.
"So the standard weapons are basically pistols with long blades or daggers, which are lightweight and do not hinder movement."
He patted the weapon pouches on either side of his waist, then pulled out a recurve machete with a black-plated blade and handed it to Milo, explaining as he did so:
"My favorite, I forgot the specific model and name, I named it Ex-Wife because it has the same terrifying destructive power as my ex-wife."
Milo weighed the machete in his hand.
It has a good weight and a comfortable grip. The one-piece tang design greatly increases the strength of the knife, and the black coating on the surface also isolates the reflective effect, increasing its concealment.
Milo held the blade horizontally and carefully touched the sharpened edge.
"The triple-layer steel forging technique."
"Oh? It seems I don't need to explain too much. You can choose for yourself." Old Theon was slightly surprised, then waved his hand, indicating that Milo could choose the weapon himself.
After all, he's the kind of person who can recognize the forging techniques of a machete at a glance.
“No, I was just praising your ex-wife.” Milo handed the machete back to old Theon and strolled slowly through the cold weapons section.
Over 80 percent of the law enforcement officer's melee weapon system is hardcore and minimalist in style, with no decorative layers or engravings other than etched law enforcement images.
However, a small portion still retains the style of classical weapons, namely medieval rapiers and some exquisite short daggers.
“These days, nobody chooses these fancy things anymore. They’re basically just sitting here collecting dust. In a few more years, they could be sent to a museum.”
Old Theon sneered.
The practicality of this type of weapon is indeed less than its aesthetic appeal. It might be used in some important ceremonies, but law enforcement systems are not fond of ceremonies and tend to cut corners and keep things simple. Therefore, flashy weapons almost never get a chance to appear.
"Pick one."
Theon seemed quite curious about what kind of melee weapon Milo would choose.
"This one will do, but I want to adjust the blade angle. It's too narrow and prone to chipping."
Milo took a Bowie knife from the shelf.
The broad blade is etched with a scythe-like motif and a blood groove, featuring a teardrop-shaped tip and an S-shaped handguard. This type of knife has a nickname as imposing as its design: the butcher's knife.
"Good eye." Old Theon nodded, then asked, "Alright, as is customary, you should first give this beautiful lady a friendly name."
“Then let’s call her ‘ex-girlfriend’.” Milo chuckled, giving Boyd the knife a name similar to that of old Theon.
"Do you have an ex-girlfriend?" Old Theon scoffed at Milo's act of stealing ideas.
"Oh, there really is one."
Milo retorted jokingly.
The two men bypassed the shelves and entered the area for firearms.
The most eye-catching item in the firearms section was a slender rifle displayed on a long table.
The fact that it is treated differently from other weapons suggests that this thing must have something special about it.
Milo glanced at the weapon's nameplate—Whitworth.
This Whitworth rifle has a slender and elegant body. The leftmost end of the firing mechanism side plate is engraved with wheat ears from top to bottom. The stock is made of high-quality walnut wood and has a smooth surface. There is a metal buttplate at the rear of the stock.
"0.451 caliber, 914mm muzzle-loading rifle barrel, percussion cap firing mechanism."
Old Theon shouldered his slender rifle, made an aiming motion, and explained:
"It's not a weapon in active service and isn't mass-produced, but it's currently the only rifle with an accurate range of over 1000m. You can think of it as a sniper rifle, but most people can't handle it. It's usually used by shooting enthusiasts from the aristocratic class."
Milo glanced at the still-intact factory gun oil on the barrel and muttered, "So it's still a virgin?"
"Yes, not a single shot was fired."
Old Theon smiled and put down his rifle.
"Let's leave this old maid for now. I doubt she'll ever be of any use. With such high accuracy and range, someone has to know how to use her... Let's look at these short weapons over here first."
……
The shelves were completely filled with short-barreled firearms.
Primarily handguns.
Old Theon casually picked up a pistol: "If you want something retro, choose this one. It's an old thing, but a lot of people like it, like our Chief of Staff." "A flintlock musket?" Milo shook his head, clearly not liking the thing.
Rebecca always carried this type of old-fashioned pistol, flintlock firing, single shot.
Most importantly, this piece of junk is far too weak. While its accuracy and destructive power are decent, it's the kind of thing that takes two hours to charge and only provides five minutes of talk time. In combat, it's practically a disposable item; after firing one shot, there's absolutely no time to reload and prepare for the second. (For a similar awkward scene, see the battle in the abandoned containment facility in the valley.)
Rebecca might be the kind of person who prefers retro styles, which can be seen from her detachable melee weapons.
But Milo is different; he certainly wouldn't choose a flintlock musket, an antique that has been in service for over two hundred years.
The memories of Carl that remained in his mind strongly suggested that he make another choice.
"It has to be this one."
Milo took a brand-new Remington revolver from a box.
This is a modern heavy revolver with a total length of 36 cm. The front section has an octagonal barrel with internal rifling, which is 20 cm long. The cylinder has 6 chambers, a single-shot action, and separate-loading ammunition. Each time a round is loaded, the percussion cap, gunpowder, bullet, and shims must be loaded separately.
Compared to single-shot flintlock muskets, the Remington revolver's six chambers provided six shots of error tolerance, and the revolver also featured a folding breechblock under the barrel, making loading much more convenient than with flintlock muskets.
Most importantly, this thing is the representative of high-powered handguns on the market. The lead bullets fired by the large-caliber handgun using black powder can reach a speed of more than 300 meters per second, and it can kill large targets such as horses with one shot.
This is the perfect weapon for law enforcement officers: violent, efficient, and deadly.
……
"You can ask the technical department for usage and maintenance methods, and if that doesn't work, then come and ask me."
Old Theon nodded.
He was quite satisfied with Milo's choice.
Although Theon also carried a flintlock musket on his waist, that was because revolvers hadn't been invented when he joined the company. The flintlock musket had become part of his career, and it wasn't so easy to suddenly switch to another type of weapon.
After Milo selected his weapons and equipment, he went to the management office to register, led by old Theon.
The management office staff verified Milo's law enforcement credentials and recorded the weapon's model number.
After leaving the armory, old Theon lit another cigarette and stood by the window of the administration office, muttering, "That Boyce knife needs to be re-sharpened, the angle adjusted, sacrificing some sharpness is fine. Also, it needs a wearable leather sheath, and the gun too."
As he spoke, he tossed a cigarette to the law enforcement officer inside the management office window.
The latter took the cigarette, clipped it to his ear, quickly organized and recorded all the contents, tore off a delivery slip, and handed it out along with the heavy revolver.
"You can take the gun. You can pick up the knife and other accessories tomorrow at noon. Also, take this pickup slip and go downstairs to pick up your uniform."
"Thank you."
……
After wandering around the law enforcement building several times, Milo finally finished all the preparations he needed to make for his first day on the job.
When he returned to the criminal investigation team's office carrying two sets of uniforms, old Theon pointed to several desks piled high with countless documents in the corner and said:
"Set up your own workspace, you can choose any space that no one else is using... If you don't smoke, you can sit by the window, everyone here smokes."
Milo spent a lot of effort clearing all the messy file boxes into a corner to make room for a clean desk, and finally placed the two sets of uniforms on the desk.
The uniforms provided by law enforcement include a variety of accessories, such as a built-in white shirt, black vest, jacket, trench coat, and even small accessories such as ties, cufflinks, and belts.
This complete outfit, even if worn by a pig, would at least make it look like a blood-soaked black pig.
……
Old Theon rummaged through his belongings and found an old gun pouch, which he tossed to Milo to use for the day.
Milo tied the pouch to his belt, then slipped the revolver into the holster, and it fit perfectly.
"Remember, you can carry cold weapons with you, but firearms must be temporarily stored at the management office when you are not on duty. Don't take them home after get off work without knowing what you're doing."
Old Theon casually stepped his boots onto the corner of the table, tightened the laces in a cocky manner, wiped the dust off the boots with his trench coat sleeve, and then grabbed the documents to dust off the dirty tabletop.
His gaze shifted to Milo:
"Don't change the clothes inside, just put on the trench coat and try it on."
Milo obeyed the order and put on the black trench coat typical of law enforcement officers: "It fits perfectly."
Old Theon crossed his arms, nodded, and gestured again:
"Put your hat on."
"Face mask."
……
The leather tricorn hat covered Milona's messy hair, and against the backdrop of the black trench coat, his entire demeanor instantly exuded a certain imposing aura.
"Okay, that's about right."
Old Theon stood up straight and adjusted his collar:
"Now that we have everything we need, let's get to work. We're going to the outskirts of the city to grab someone."
……
"Huh? That fast?"
