Chapter 58 It’s all here
Where did you go?
When Milo returned to the law enforcement office, old Theon was sitting alone in his office smoking, and he still didn't see any other members of the department.
To be honest, Milo was quite curious about his colleagues whom he had never met.
Day after day, the entire law enforcement office and criminal investigation department had only two people on duty, while the others were out on missions, which was somewhat absurd.
Imagine if Theon was the only person in the Criminal Investigation Department before Milo joined?
"Me? I just mediated a public dispute." Milo made up a reason casually.
"Oh? Tell me about it." Old Theon exhaled a puff of smoke toward the ceiling.
"It's just a conflict between the boss and the employees, nothing new." Milo plopped down at his desk.
But before I could even settle into my seat, there was a knock on the office door.
"Come here."
The person standing outside the door was Rebecca.
……
"What do you mean?" Milo got up and went into the corridor.
“Go to the cemetery outside the city and meet someone. That’s where we met last time,” Rebecca said cryptically.
Milo was somewhat puzzled:
"Don't you find it strange? We have to travel all the way to the cemetery to meet. He's my boss now. If you want to talk about an undercover story, undercover agents usually meet on the rooftop."
When Rebecca said she was "meeting someone," she was of course referring to Inspector Nero.
If Nero's meeting with Milo before the enforcement assessment was to avoid attracting attention, it's rather strange that they would meet at the cemetery now that Milo is an enforcement officer.
"Don't ask me, I don't know either."
Rebecca glanced at her pocket watch.
"Leave early, you still have half an hour."
"Alright." Milo shook his head.
……
Milo mounted his horse and headed to his destination.
I met Nero again at the same spot where we had met before, at Karl's grave.
To be honest, whenever Milo sees Carl's tombstone again, he always feels a phantom pain in his head. He was nearly killed by this aftereffect a while ago, and he is still in a state of lingering fear.
As for Nero, he was no different from before, dressed in a formal suit and leather jacket, smoking a cigar and leaning on a cane.
This guy is the only one Milo has ever seen who actually uses his cane; everyone else just plays with it. Only Nero is a real cripple.
"Inspector."
"Here you are." Nero looked Milo up and down. "Why does this enforcer's uniform look so righteous on you?"
"Huh? You picked this idol?" Milo looked down to check his badge and tie to see if anything was missing, and found nothing. "Our team leader said I look pretty much like one."
"Your appearance is a bit off, and your skin is in bad shape," Nero commented.
"Are we two grown men really going to be discussing skincare in the wild?" Milo muttered.
"Then let's get down to business."
Nero then habitually used his cane to scrape the weeds off the ground.
"Your assessment results are pretty good. I was going to offer to use my connections to change your scores, but it turns out I was just being a busybody."
His tone wasn't entirely one of praise; it also contained a hint of teasing.
Milo grinned, knowing full well that Nero's words were a warning to him.
Nero had said at the time that his original intention was to have Milo take over Carl's job after entering the law enforcement system. If things went well, Milo would probably be assigned to the Solomon gang as an undercover agent on his first day of passing the law enforcement test, since he had an innate advantage: almost no personal information.
However, Milo knew this, and by taking advantage of Carl's talent, he directly achieved first place in the assessment, completely thwarting Nero's original plan.
When everyone knew that Milo Valrocan was the top performer in this year's law enforcement assessment, the whole undercover operation was basically over.
After all, this had been proven earlier; everyone at the pleasure house knew Milo's identity. If he were to go undercover, forget about three years later, he'd be dead in three days.
"Well, you have to prove yourself, right? You got the extra spot, and you came in first place. You'll be proud of yourself, won't you?" Milo chuckled.
Nero didn't seem to mind much and chuckled along.
Although everyone knows the truth, there's no point in bringing it up again now that things have already come to this.
Nero's laughter stopped abruptly, and he changed the subject:
"But I will never be able to let go of Karl's death."
"Should we continue the investigation?" Milo asked, his hands in the outer pockets of his trench coat, staring at Karl's tombstone.
“After his death, everything about Solomon was shelved. No one investigated anymore because all the leads went cold, and all the other people who knew about it disappeared.” Nero shook his head.
Milo didn't turn his head, but shifted his gaze and glanced at Nero discreetly to the side. He didn't see any trace of emotion on Nero's face.
So... what do you mean?
“I want to transfer all the existing information on this case to you so you can take over. Since going undercover isn’t working, let’s investigate openly.” Although Nero used the word “hope,” there was no room for negotiation in his tone.
Milo nodded readily. "You're the boss, you're in charge."
“I must remind you that the Solomon Gang is a very complicated organization. It involves far more than just the city of Nanwei. Its influence extends to most of the country, so don’t let your guard down,” Nero cautioned.
“I want to confirm something first. Since its sphere of influence is so vast, there must be many people investigating them. At least you shouldn’t be the only one doing this,” Milo said thoughtfully.
This is something he cannot understand.
Nero's status is certainly significant enough within Nanwei City, but it's not enough when viewed from a national perspective.
Milo didn't quite understand why a city's law enforcement inspector would clash with a military-backed force like the Solomon.
"Is that so? You're already suspecting me before you've even started investigating?" Nero glanced at Milo with a half-smile.
Milo gave an awkward smile:
"It's not that serious, it's just simple curiosity."
“That’s good.” Nero nodded. “Before I hand over all the information to you, I can tell you that this case is definitely not something that can be solved in ten days or half a month. Be prepared for a long battle. Once the investigation begins, our lives will become very rich.”
"Actually, life is already quite fulfilling now."
As Milo recalled what he had seen and heard yesterday, and then thought about the scenes from Carl's perspective as an undead, he had a bad feeling.
“I chose you to handle this matter because I saw your potential, and you have proven your abilities to some extent so far… As Karl’s teacher, I must find out the cause of his death. The more help you can provide, the more I will give you in return.” Nero’s words were quite straightforward.
Milo thought for a moment, then nodded and said, "It seems you're a good teacher."
"Are you being sarcastic?" Nero raised an eyebrow.
“I’m telling the truth,” Milo shrugged.
Karl's death was too bizarre and suspicious. How should I put it... even with Milo's perspective as an undead, he still couldn't figure out what had happened.
Karl died in a state of confusion and uncertainty.
From that perspective, Milo saw too many strange and bizarre things. He couldn't distinguish between what was real and what was not, but the emotions he perceived in Karl through Karl's perspective were absolutely real.
Calvin's feelings for Nero were not entirely friendly...
However, Nero states that he and Karl have a mutually trusting master-disciple relationship, which contradicts the previous statement.
This suggests that Nero is definitely hiding something, but this is something Milo is currently unaware of.
Therefore, he could not possibly give Nero his complete trust.
……
Milo was wearing a mask, and Nero didn't detect anything unusual in his eyes, only nodding:
"Then I'll take that as you accepting this task."
“I’m waiting for your information,” Milo replied.
“Let’s talk about something else.” Nero took a deep drag of his cigarette and exhaled through his mouth and nose before saying, “As for the Sherman family, I don’t think anything unexpected will happen for the time being. The Earl will be back next Monday. That old man values the family’s reputation very much. With him around, the Sherman family members won’t do anything to you or your family, whether openly or secretly… unless you take the initiative to do something.”
Yes, things might change once Harrison confirms he is the heir to the title.
Milo muttered to himself.
It's clear that Nero doesn't want any friction with the noble forces at all. His words sound reasonable, but he's only telling Milo not to cause trouble, without explaining the potential dangers in the future.
Yesterday at the hospital, Milo overheard Harrison promising his sister-in-law that he would kill the entire Valrocan family.
Milo just listened casually to Nero's criticisms.
He knew exactly what he needed to do.
……
Similar to their previous meeting, Nero left early, while Milo needed to stay at the cemetery for a while before leaving; traveling together always attracts attention.
Milo lingered in the spot for a while, but after Nero left, he did not immediately leave the cemetery.
Instead, they turned around and entered another area of the park.
He found a grave belonging to a woman named Anna.
I stood there thinking for a long time.
He even took out his notebook from his pocket to confirm that he had not remembered the name wrong.
In the notebook, in the family tree of the Sherman family members, there is a line that starts from the name of Lady Grace, deviates from the whole family tree, and finally falls on the name Anna.
The two names indicate a mother-daughter relationship.
Anna is the first wife of the current Earl Sherman, or more accurately, the mother of his first child. Because they were not legally married, Grace has always been considered an illegitimate child.
"I'm here anyway."
Milo considered it for a long time, and finally painted that hideous upside-down golden tree totem on the tombstone.
……
...
The next day, Milo found Yan.
In exchange for paying him to go to a pleasure house when he gets his salary next month, Yan will skip work for a few days and go on a long trip.
"Remember, Merlin Town. Here's the address and map. Also, this is my law enforcement officer's badge. When you get there, find the local civil affairs office, show them your badge, and ask them to help me find something..."
