Chapter 938 Changing Mindset.
They said they'd think about it some more, but there wasn't really anything to think about.
After returning home, I realized that Liu Tianxian had gone to great lengths to get me there, so I couldn't just be heartless.
Sun Yi is determined to be a model husband. Now that he's already reaped the benefits, he absolutely won't do something like this again; he needs to take things slowly and steadily.
Then, in the last few days of the month, he began a busy life of going back and forth between two points.
Liu Yifei was the same. From her wedding to her honeymoon and then to her filming trip to the United States, she basically disappeared from China for more than two months.
She has various events to attend, whether for different media outlets or for the major brands she has signed contracts with.
As the brand's top spokesperson, although she doesn't have any mandatory tasks except for specific new product launch events, there are still regulations regarding the number of events she can attend each year.
Perfect timing, I'll take advantage of this time to do a little busy work.
Sun Yi, on the other hand, was shuttling between Starry Sky Digital and Senior Sister Yu.
Although filming for "Superman" was finished, special effects production remained a top priority. He would go to the company every two days to check on the production progress and preview the final special effects.
Currently, the special effects are being done according to his requirements; the rest is just a matter of time.
Aside from checking out the special effects, he basically went to Yu's "Feihong" studio.
Although he is not the director, given his current fame and status, as long as his name is on the credits, fans and moviegoers will inevitably rely on him, which will raise their expectations for the film. Especially since he will be playing the male lead, the demands on the film will be even higher.
Therefore, Sun Yi participated in the film's preparation as much as possible.
Fortunately, he and Senior Sister Yu had a long-standing friendship, and the latter was not at all resistant; on the contrary, she readily accepted his shortcomings in directing.
Of course, in some aspects, Senior Sister Yu still firmly adheres to her position.
For example, Sun Yi was not satisfied with the script's plot, which included a very Korean drama-like storyline about the male lead getting a terminal illness. The reason was simple: it was just too awkward.
This is also one of the main reasons why he didn't plan to make this movie in the first place.
Unfortunately, when Senior Sister Yu heard that Sun Yi wanted to change this part, she was vehemently opposed, saying that she wanted this kind of extreme sadomasochistic love story.
It has to be torture, otherwise it won't work.
Sun Yi was quite helpless, but there was nothing he could do.
However, looking at it from another perspective, there are fundamental reasons why Korean dramas have remained popular throughout Asia.
Korean dramas are known for their three classic themes: amnesia, terminal illness, and car accidents. While these tropes are often overused, a well-executed drama can be truly captivating, with strong plot conflicts that easily evoke emotional resonance in the audience. If the actors deliver convincing performances, the immersive experience can be incredibly powerful, making it a true tearjerker.
That's how the script is.
Of course, even though Sun Yi used the words "that's it" to describe it, that was his inner complaint, and it doesn't mean that Senior Sister Yu's script wasn't good enough.
After several months of polishing, Yu's version of "When a Man Falls in Love" is completely different from the outline version that Sun Yi initially put into the company's script library.
The basic structure remains unchanged, but the characters are more fleshed out, many details are handled more delicately, and the characters' motivations are more reasonable and fluid. It can be said that it is an authentic Chinese love story. Not only the script, but also the specific location scouting in the early stages of filming, were all taken care of by Senior Sister Yu during the two months that Sun Yi was away from the country.
In her studio, Sun Yi saw a map of a small town in Northeast China. It was marked with different colored pins, indicating many filming locations that matched the scenes in the script. There were even photos of the actual locations, as well as the planned filming times and seasons.
It can be said that she has taken care of most of the pre-production work for the entire production team.
Sun Yi was very curious at the time and asked Senior Sister Yu why she chose to film in Northeast China.
Senior Sister Yu's answer was very insightful.
She said, "In the end, I chose the Northeast because I felt that only that once glorious land could have the kind of resilience and helplessness of struggling to survive in the bitter cold that the script needed, as well as the unique charm of a middle-aged man who has failed, mixed with the rust of steel mills and cheap beer. Beijing is too glamorous, and Jiangnan is too delicate. Neither is right."
As Sun Yi looked at the familiar city names on the map, imagining the story unfolding on the land where he had grown up, a mysterious sense of destiny and reality welled up within him.
He had to admit that Senior Sister Yu had a keen eye; this location choice immediately laid a solid foundation for the story.
The script and the location shots are all set; all that's left is the actors.
Besides the male and female leads, Sun Yi and Liu Yifei, there is also the male lead's father, who is considered a relatively important character.
The script wasn't changed by Sun Yi, so Yu Feihong naturally gave the role of the father to Sun Yi.
The latter didn't stand on ceremony and directly pointed out Mr. Li Xuejian.
In his view, the male protagonist's father in the script is a taciturn old worker who has spent his whole life dealing with steel and has a deep estrangement from his son, which is in line with the common situation of families in Northeast China during that era.
Upon hearing that it was Professor Li Xuejian, Senior Sister Yu agreed almost without hesitation, and even offered to personally visit and invite him along with Sun Yi.
Things progressed unexpectedly smoothly. After meeting the two, Li Xuejian warmly welcomed them, inquired about their purpose, carefully read the script, and became deeply interested in the complex and inarticulate old father character. Without much hesitation, he readily agreed to join the project.
In less than a week, the main creative team and core actors of "When Men Fall in Love" were basically finalized, the script was polished and matured, the crew was ready, the filming locations were identified, and filming could begin as soon as the order was given.
However, this "order" had to be delayed slightly.
Since it will be May soon, Sun Yi will be heading to France around the middle of the month to attend the 66th Cannes Film Festival as a jury member for the main competition section.
This was a pre-arranged trip, concerning personal honor and representing the image of Chinese filmmakers on the international stage, so it could not be compromised.
Looking at it this way, at most he can only film for about ten days before leaving the crew, which is too much of a hassle.
Director Yu waved her hand and gave Sun Yi and Liu Yifei a long vacation, saying that they would participate in the filming after they returned from Cannes. As for herself, she and the crew went ahead and would go there to set up the film crew as soon as the May Day holiday was over, waiting for them.
And so, "When a Man Falls in Love" came to an end. Sun Yi went from being reluctant at first to passively accepting it, and finally actively participating. Although there were some sweet words and tricks in between that cannot be discussed in detail, he completely changed his mindset.
To be honest, the sugar coating is still quite sweet.
