Solving the case: Combining the police dog's olfactory genes at the beginning
Chapter 1148 It's all over now, nothing's wrong.
"So, genitals are cut off."
"An eye for an eye."
Luo Fei's voice was as cold as ice.
"Now, we need to find that girl."
There was a brief silence in the conference room.
Wang Tiezhu and Li Jianguo exchanged a glance. They had to admit that Luo Fei's reasoning was impeccable.
Luo Fei stared at the blurry figure on the monitor screen, his fingers unconsciously tapping on the table.
The man on the screen was completely wrapped in a black down jacket, with the hood pulled down low and a mask covering most of his face. His only visible eyes were also covered by the shadow cast by the brim of the hood.
But what's most striking is the reflective object he's gripping tightly in his right hand. Under the streetlights at five in the morning, it's clearly the metal handle of a knife.
"Section Chief Deng, play this part again."
Luo Fei squinted and leaned forward.
Deng Yunzhou clicked to replay the video, which showed a man quickly crossing the road, his movements unusually agile.
Luo Fei's "genius eye" caught a detail: the man's left leg seemed slightly uncoordinated, with an almost imperceptible pause with each step.
"That walking posture."
Luo Fei muttered to himself, a strange sense of familiarity welling up in his heart, yet it dissipated like wisps of smoke that he couldn't grasp.
"Captain Luo, do you think this person is the murderer?"
Deng Yunzhou adjusted his glasses.
"It's a pity I can't see their faces clearly."
Luo Fei did not answer immediately; instead, he took out his phone and dialed the monitoring team's number.
"Xiao Zhang, monitor all roads within a three-kilometer radius of the crime scene, focusing on vehicles that passed through between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., especially taxis and ride-hailing vehicles."
After hanging up the phone, Luo Fei turned to Deng Yunzhou.
"Send this video to all teams and let them notice this feature: the left leg may have an old injury, and there may be a slight limp when walking."
Deng Yunzhou raised an eyebrow in surprise.
"Captain Luo, how did you tell he had a problem with his leg?"
Luo Fei pointed to the screen.
"When the right foot lands, the body's center of gravity will naturally shift to the right. This is a habit formed from long-term protection of the left leg."
He paused.
"However, people usually can't even see this level of injury."
As he walked out of the technical department, Luo Fei rubbed his temples.
He hadn't slept for more than 30 hours, and even his "genius eyes" began to feel dry.
The main office at the end of the corridor was brightly lit. Through the half-open door, he saw several team members dozing off, some lying down and some lying up, while Chen Xuanran was still typing on the keyboard in front of the computer.
As soon as he pushed open the door, Chen Xuanran looked up, his eyes bloodshot.
"Captain Luo, have you found anything?"
Luo Fei nodded and briefly explained the surveillance situation.
Chen Xuanran immediately perked up.
"I will contact the transportation department immediately to retrieve the vehicle information."
"Not urgent."
Luo Fei stopped her hand as she reached for the phone.
"Let everyone rest for half an hour first, including you."
His gaze swept across the office and landed on Li Ya, who was sleeping in the corner.
As a support staff member, she didn't have to stay up all night, but she insisted on staying to take care of everyone's daily needs.
Luo Fei walked over and gently tapped the table in front of her.
Li Ya suddenly looked up, a strand of hair stuck to the corner of her mouth, her sleepy appearance completely unlike the capable logistics supervisor she usually was.
"what time is it?"
She asked in a hoarse voice.
"six thirty."
Luo Fei pointed to the wall clock.
"You should go back now; the child must miss his mother."
Li Ya stretched and gave a tired smile.
"It's okay, the little guy is more attached to his dad. As long as he's home, the child doesn't even think about me."
Luo Fei raised an eyebrow.
"Your husband is really capable; he can handle such a small child."
"He."
Li Ya's eyes were filled with tenderness.
"Besides writing books and watching movies, she's quite good at taking care of children. She even won the Jiangcheng City Chess Championship last week."
Luo Fei's heart suddenly skipped a beat.
The keywords "chess champion," "writing books," and "raising children" collided in his mind, and that familiar sense of incongruity returned.
Just like the way that person walked in the surveillance footage, you should be able to remember it, but you just get stuck on a certain point.
What kind of books does your husband write?
Luo Fei asked casually, while subtly observing Li Ya's expression.
"Detective novels, a niche genre."
Li Ya was tidying up the documents on the table.
"He said he wanted to write a series of novels based on real cases."
Luo Fei's eyes widened slightly.
"That's perfect. I also enjoy reading crime stories. How about we introduce ourselves sometime? Maybe I can provide him with some material."
Li Ya suddenly burst out laughing.
"Coincidentally, he's quite interested in you too. He said your unconventional way of solving cases would be perfect for a 'feel-good' novel."
"A wish-fulfillment novel?"
Luo Fei's face darkened.
Li Ya realized she had said the wrong thing and quickly waved her hand.
"He was just saying it casually, don't take it to heart. I think you have a very personal style in handling cases. Police officers are human too, and everyone has their own way of handling cases."
Luo Fei stared at Li Ya for a few seconds, then suddenly asked.
"Has your husband injured his left leg before?"
Li Ya was visibly taken aback.
"How do you know? He broke his leg playing basketball in college and it left him with some aftereffects."
She looked at Luo Fei with a puzzled expression.
"Captain Luo, do you know my husband?"
“No, just.”
Luo Fei swallowed his words back.
"It's a professional habit, and he has a strong sense of observation. Last time he came to pick you up, I noticed that he walked a little unnaturally."
Li Ya's expression relaxed.
"I see. But his injury is no longer a problem, it just a little sore on rainy days."
Luo Fei nodded and changed the subject.
"Go buy some breakfast for everyone, it's on me."
Li Ya responded and hurriedly packed her things to leave.
Luo Fei stood at the office door, a smile unconsciously creeping onto his lips.
Li Ya had just left, and the faint scent of jasmine from her still seemed to linger in the air.
He shook his head, thinking that this girl was indeed likable, speaking softly and acting efficiently. No wonder everyone in the bureau praised her highly.
"If only Chen Xuanran were half as gentle as Li Ya."
Luo Fei muttered something under his breath as he pushed open the door, then froze in shock.
In the office, Chen Xuanran was leaning back in his chair, his head tilted back, his mouth slightly open, emitting soft snoring.
Her police badge was askew, and the collar of her uniform was wrinkled from being rubbed.
Luo Fei tiptoed over, took out his phone, and turned on the video recording function.
"Tsk tsk, even our Officer Chen has moments when he's so unguarded."
Luo Fei suppressed a laugh, focusing the camera on Chen Xuanran's sleeping face.
Her eyelashes cast a small shadow under the light, and her lips, which were usually tightly pursed, relaxed, revealing even a hint of glistening at the corner of her mouth.
The snoring suddenly grew louder, and Chen Xuanran unconsciously smacked his lips, tilting his head to the other side.
Luo Fei almost burst out laughing, then quickly covered his mouth.
Just then, Chen Xuanran suddenly jolted awake and abruptly opened his eyes.
"Luo Fei!"
She sat up straight reflexively and hurriedly wiped her mouth.
"When did you get back?"
Luo Fei quickly stuffed his phone back into his pocket, pretending nothing had happened.
"Just got back. What's wrong? Did you dream about catching a criminal?"
Chen Xuanran rubbed his eyes, the red marks from the chair back still visible on his cheek.
"How long have I been asleep? Where did you go?"
"Network Technology Department".
Luo Fei pulled over a chair and sat down.
"We've made a discovery over Deng Yunzhou's side; the suspect's video has been found."
"what?"
Chen Xuanran suddenly stood up, the chair making a screeching sound.
"Have you found the suspect?"
Luo Fei waved his hand.
"Don't get excited, it's not completely certain yet, we're still investigating." He yawned.
"I've been working non-stop these past few days, I'm going to lie down for a bit."
As soon as he leaned back, the chair creaked under the weight.
Chen Xuanran frowned.
"Be gentle, this chair is about to fall apart."
She picked up the folder on the table and fanned herself with it.
"I'll go check with the technical department."
Luo Fei closed his eyes and hummed in agreement. Only after hearing Chen Xuanran's footsteps fade away and the office door close did he breathe a sigh of relief. He took out his phone to watch the video he had just recorded and couldn't help but laugh again.
"I absolutely have to show this to her later."
As he thought about it, his eyelids grew heavier and heavier, and he soon fell into a light sleep.
After an unknown amount of time, Luo Fei suddenly opened his eyes, his heart pounding.
What did he just dream about? No, it wasn't a dream, it was a flashback. The way the suspect walked, that slightly outward-pointing gait, the way his right shoulder was slightly higher than his left.
"Jiang Xia!"
Luo Fei blurted it out.
The time Li Ya's husband, Jiang Xia, came to the police station to give her the car keys, Luo Fei happened to meet him in the parking lot.
At the time, Jiang Xia was wearing a dark gray trench coat and had a unique walking posture, which made Luo Fei take a second look.
Looking back now, the man in the black down jacket in the surveillance footage walked in the exact same way as Jiang Xia!
Luo Fei immediately closed his eyes and activated his almost abnormal "super memory".
In my mind, the image of Jiangxia that day gradually became clear.
He took the keys from Li Ya, turned and walked towards the parking lot, his right shoulder slightly hunched, his steps steady but somewhat pigeon-toed.
"Yes, that's him."
Luo Fei opened his eyes; his palms were already sweaty.
He needs to confirm this.
As soon as Luo Fei stepped out of the office, he bumped into Li Ya, who was carrying two bags of steamed buns.
"Captain Luo? You're awake?"
Li Ya smiled and held up the bag.
"I bought steamed buns, I'll eat them while they're hot."
Luo Fei took the bag and asked casually.
"Li Ya, where do you live again?"
"What's wrong with the Shanshui International complex next to Central Park?"
Li Ya tilted her head, a strand of hair falling down to her cheek.
"Oh, I've been thinking about buying a house recently, and I think the Central Park area is nice."
Luo Fei said nonchalantly.
"What's the environment like over there?"
Li Ya smiled.
"The environment is quite nice, but there are many residential buildings and few people, so it feels a bit deserted. The supporting facilities are not yet fully developed."
She glanced at her watch.
"Captain Luo, would you like to eat something first?"
"Go back and rest first. You've worked hard these past two days."
Luo Fei patted her on the shoulder.
"I'll take the steamed buns to the technical department."
Li Ya nodded and left.
Luo Fei watched her retreating figure, his brows furrowed.
Shanshui International is not far from the crime scene; it's a ten-minute drive away.
In the technical department, Deng Yunzhou was staring at the computer screen, with Chen Xuanran standing behind him, both of them looking serious.
Luo Fei placed the steamed buns on the table.
"Eat something first."
"Captain Luo!"
Deng Yunzhou turned his head, his eyes bloodshot.
“We investigated for three hours; the suspect’s movements were too bizarre.”
Luo Fei picked up a steamed bun and took a bite.
"Check the video footage of the entrance and exit of the parking garage at Shanshui International Parking Lot."
"Shanshui International?"
Chen Xuanran frowned.
"Isn't that the neighborhood where Li Ya lives?"
Deng Yunzhou was already typing rapidly on the keyboard.
"I've got it! There's a telescope that's diagonally facing the parking garage of Shanshui International."
Luo Fei leaned closer to the screen.
"Retrieve the video footage from about ten minutes after the suspect disappeared from the intersection."
The scene quickly shifts, and a few seconds later, a black Mazda appears in the frame.
Luo Fei's heart raced. The person in the driver's seat was wearing a mask, but the posture, the curve of their shoulders...
Luo Fei's voice was a little hoarse.
The image gradually became clear, and the license plate number was clearly visible.
There was dead silence in the office.
“This is Li Ya’s car.”
Cheng Yunchuan stammered.
Chen Xuanran gasped.
"So that person at the intersection is...Jiang Xia?"
All eyes turned to Luo Fei.
He stared at the screen, his expression grave.
"It's almost certain."
Just then, the door was pushed open, and Li Ya walked in.
"Are there enough steamed buns? Should I go get some more?"
Her words trailed off as she sensed the eerie atmosphere in the room.
"what happened?"
Luo Fei.
"Li Ya, come and take a look at this."
Li Ya approached with a puzzled look, and when she saw the image on the screen, her face turned pale instantly.
"This is my family's car. When has Jiang Xia ever gone out in the middle of the night? How come I didn't know?"
"In the early hours of the day the incident occurred."
Luo Fei said calmly.
Li Ya covered her mouth with her hand.
"You mean Jiang Xia went out on the day the case happened?"
Her voice began to tremble.
"Impossible, he clearly..."
"Find out exactly when Jiang Xia went out."
Luo Fei said to Deng Yunzhou.
Li Ya had already taken out her phone, her fingers trembling as she dialed.
She practically shouted it out after the call connected.
"Jiang Xia! Did you go out in the middle of the night the night before last?"
A muffled voice came from the other end of the phone, and Li Ya's expression gradually softened.
"You couldn't write, so you went out for a walk? What time? Four o'clock? You came back at six?"
She breathed a sigh of relief and turned to Luo Fei.
"He said he couldn't write anymore in the middle of the night, so he drove around for a while, leaving at four o'clock and returning at six o'clock."
Luo Fei nodded.
"The deceased was murdered around 2 a.m.
"So when Jiang Xia left, the person was already dead."
Chen Xuanran reacted quickly.
Li Ya spoke into the phone.
"You scared me to death! Why were you running around in the middle of the night? Is our son awake? Okay, I'll be right back."
She hung up the phone and looked at everyone with a sigh of relief.
"Jiang Xia said he just drove around and didn't go anywhere else."
Deng Yunzhou has retrieved new surveillance video.
“Look, Jiang Xia did indeed come out of the garage at 4:03.”
Luo Fei stared at the timestamp and nodded slowly.
"The timing doesn't match up; he just happened to be there by chance."
"But."
Chen Xuanran bit her lip.
"If he wasn't the murderer, why would he appear dozens of meters away from the crime scene, carrying something that looked like a murder weapon?"
Silence fell in the office once again.
Luo Fei rubbed his temples. The case seemed to have returned to square one, even more perplexing than before.
The atmosphere in the office had just relaxed when Li Ya, who was helping her husband Jiang Xia pack his things, finally smiled.
Jiang Xia patted his wife's shoulder and whispered words of comfort.
"It's okay, it's all over."
Just then, a series of hurried footsteps came from the corridor. (End of Chapter)
