Chapter 1737 Supervision
Chapter 1737 Supervision
Finally, Fury's gaze shifted to Rumlow in the shadows.
"Agent Rumlow."
"Sir."
Rumlow's voice was deep and steady, like a stone thrown into deep water.
“Your task is the most direct. As S.H.I.E.L.D.’s top containment and countermeasures expert, I need you to master the external security systems of the ‘Core’ device, the physical layout of the energy delivery network, and the execution details of all emergency shutdown and physical isolation protocols as quickly as possible.”
Fury's words sounded perfectly in line with Rumlow's "professional" identity: "I need you to make sure that once Captain Rogers gives the order, or Agent Romanov raises the alarm, you can cut or disable the critical nodes of this device in the shortest time and in the most effective way. Any hesitation could result in the deaths of millions. Understand?"
"Understood, sir."
Rumlow's answer was crisp and decisive, with an almost cold confidence: "I will ensure absolute physical control over the device."
His gaze swept over the energy conduits and force field generator interfaces again, this time with a "legitimate" focus on carrying out a mission.
Tony's alarm bells instantly spiked to their highest decibel level—Fury had essentially handed over a spare key to open Pandora's box to the person who made him extremely uneasy!
"very good."
Fury glanced around at everyone, finally fixing his gaze on Tony's pale face. "The four of them will be on 24-hour shifts, stationed here. That's the bottom line, Stark. Either accept supervision, or I'll issue a maximum alert to the World Security Council right now, order the carrier strike group into the Pacific, and have the UN peacekeeping forces take over the entire ten-kilometer radius of the area. The choice is yours."
The color drained from Tony's face instantly, replaced by a desperate rage and pallor.
He clenched his fist tightly, his knuckles turning white from the force, and leaned forward slightly, like a trapped beast whose territory had been invaded: "Permanently stationed?! Fury! Are you fucking kidding me? This isn't a summer camp! This is a cutting-edge physics containment lab!"
He practically roared it out, his voice torn with rage and trembling with undisguised exhaustion.
“Every cubic nanometer of space here has undergone quantum-level precision calculations! Every energy beam, every tiny pulsation of the zero-point field, has been calibrated using a dynamic balance algorithm I personally wrote! An incorrect parameter, a millisecond-level delay, or even a fraction of a microgram of non-standard dust brought in by your damned boots, could trigger a chain reaction of collapse! The result—”
Tony's voice suddenly rose, carrying an almost desperate mockery, "—You're turning the entire Pacific Ocean, no, maybe half the planet, into a quantum soup of dregs! And you! Now! You're going to cram four...tourists into this place?!"
"They are the most elite tactical response and high-risk facility protection experts in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s security department! They are not tourists!"
Nick Fury's voice also struck like a hammer blow, showing no sign of backing down.
His single eye, illuminated by the core glow, gleamed with a cold, unquestionable authority, like a black diamond embedded in steel.
He stepped forward, almost nose to nose with Tony, his trench coat hem moving even though there was no wind.
“They’re here, not to serve you coffee and hand you a wrench, Stark! They’re here to make sure that when your priceless, genius brain, which has been running for 72 hours straight, short-circuits due to damn fatigue, your infamous arrogance, or any 'accident' we can’t predict—” Fury’s finger almost poked Tony’s chest, “—they won’t make all of human civilization a casualty of your failed experiment! They won’t open the gates of hell on everyone’s doorstep!”
Captain America Steve Rogers stepped forward and stood slightly to Fury's side.
He didn't look at Tony, but instead cast his calm and worried gaze toward the core, as if weighing the weight of this ball of destructive light.
His voice wasn't loud, but it carried a rock-solid firmness: "Stark, Director Fury's words, though harsh, are correct at their core."
"The danger of this thing... it has exceeded the limits of individual ability, no matter how talented that person is. We are standing here not to interfere with your research, not to steal your results. We are here to provide an extra pair of eyes, an extra layer of insurance. For the billions of lives outside who know nothing about this but will bear all the consequences."
He looked at Tony, his eyes filled with understanding, but even more so with an undeniable sense of responsibility.
He paused, letting his words carry weight, his gaze fixed firmly on Tony's eyes, which burned with rage: "We need to know everything. All the details of existing security protocols, every pre-set emergency response plan, and..."
Steve's tone became unusually serious, and he spoke slowly and deliberately, "...In the 'worst-case scenario,' activate the 'highest-priority backup control mode.' It must be ensured that, in any moment when you... are unable to perform your duties, someone can take the reins and stop the disaster. This is the bottom line, 'just in case.'"
He spoke the words "just in case" with particular heaviness.
Tony's chest heaved violently as exhaustion, anger, a sense of territorial intrusion, and intense unease over Rumlow's undisguised "professional scrutiny" battled fiercely within him.
He looked at Fury's unquestionable single eye, then swept over Steve's serious face, Natasha's unfathomable calm, Clint's wary gaze, and finally settled on Rumlow's face, which was as hard as a rock but with eyes as sharp as a hawk.
He felt a tremendous sense of powerlessness, as if he were tightly bound by a giant net called "global security," a net that was being held in the hands of Fury and that suspicious Rumlow.
He slammed his fist on the edge of the cold control panel, the hard alloy making a dull thud.
"Fine!"
He forced the word out through clenched teeth, his voice hoarse and filled with humiliated rage, “But remember, Fury, this is Stark Industries territory! This is ‘my’ lab! They—”
He pointed at the monitoring team, "—They are guests! Visitors! Not hosts! Their authority is strictly limited to 'observation' and 'defense'! They are limited to 'seeing'! They are limited to 'protection' within the security framework I set!"
He took a deep breath, his eyes flashing with an almost crazed light: "Any operation command not directly authorized by me or confirmed by my biometrics! Any attempt to bypass me and directly touch the core of the system—even the outermost redundant nodes! Any, I mean any, action that exceeds the preset boundaries of 'observation' and 'passive defense'! My butler, Jarvis—"
