Chapter 1776 The rich rely on technology, the poor rely on mutation
The waves were no longer ordinary ocean waves.
They are no longer water, but mountains that have come alive, carrying billions of tons of fury from the abyss, and rushing toward the sea with a will to destroy everything.
Between the crests of the waves, occasionally a massive, terrifying silhouette of a back is revealed, or a jagged dorsal fin like a giant mineral vein. Each collision sends up a column of water shooting into the sky, accompanied by a roar from the ancient wilderness powerful enough to shatter steel.
The viscous seawater, emitting a faint, eerie light, churned like boiling ink, completely turning this area into a chaotic quagmire that swallowed all light.
Above this boiling abyss, a golden-red light is tearing through the rolling waves with an almost suicidal resolve.
"Jarvis, lock onto Rumlow's coordinates! Calculate the optimal dive path! Squeeze every last bit of thrust from the thrusters! Chang Wei... I hope you can get there in time!"
Tony Stark's voice, transmitted through the internal communicator of his Iron Man suit, was instantly crushed by the deafening roar of the engine.
Mark's armor transformed into a burning meteor, crashing headlong into the darkness below, its trail instantly swallowed by the raging waves.
The higher horizon, almost hidden in thick, leaden-gray clouds, was where Changwei hovered.
The sea of clouds beneath our feet was like a huge, filthy wad of cotton, blocking out the hellish scene below, leaving only the muffled roars like thunder and the faint whistling of engines.
He looked down at the golden-red afterimage crashing into the rolling, dark waves, as if watching a pebble thrown into boiling water.
His face remained expressionless, his eyes calm to the point of being indifferent.
"Captain, you're still too weak."
Chang Wei's voice was deep, as if he were talking to himself, yet it seemed to pierce through the clouds and the raging sea, landing directly in the ear of the man struggling in the deep sea.
"How can a weapon be made without tempering? The Avengers are gone, but your lessons are not over yet."
He gently raised his hand, and his invisible will, like the most precise probe, silently pierced through thousands of meters of seawater, locking onto the escape pod struggling and tumbling in the raging current—Steve Rogers' last stronghold.
-
"Ugh!"
Another violent impact struck, as if an invisible giant hand had gripped Steve's escape pod and slammed it against the abyss's rocky wall.
The immense force transmitted through the bulkhead, making Steve feel as if his internal organs had shifted. A mouthful of metallic sweetness rose in his throat, which he then forced down.
He was thrown violently into the air, his back slamming heavily against the cold metal wall with a dull thud.
The communication channels inside the helmet had long been occupied by various sharp alarms and ear-piercing electrical noises, eventually plunging into a deathly silence of static.
Darkness, coldness, suffocating darkness. Only a few emergency red lights inside the escape pod were still stubbornly flashing, like the struggling heartbeat of a dying creature, casting flickering, ghostly shadows on Steve's sweat-soaked face.
Each flash of the red light illuminated the distorted lines of his face, contorted by pain and exertion, and his blue eyes, burning with an indomitable spirit even on the edge of despair.
"Sir, the structural integrity of the escape pod continues to decline...60.44%...60.13%..."
Jarvis's signature, yet now strangely cold, electronic synthesized voice became the only "life" signal in this steel coffin. Each reading was like a cold guillotine falling, cutting away the little time left.
Icy, bone-chilling seawater was gushing in through a grotesque crack in the bulkhead.
The crack resembled the gaping mouth of a demon, the twisted and rolled metal gleaming with a cold, broken light.
The water pressure was so immense that the seawater rushed in at an astonishing speed, instantly forming a small puddle on the bottom of the hold, emitting the distinctive salty smell of the deep sea, a mixture of sulfur and decaying organisms.
"No!" Steve growled, and almost without thinking, he jerked his body to the side, using his broad back to press against the fatal gash!
The cold metal edge instantly embedded itself into the flesh beneath his protective suit, sending a sharp pain through him, but he gritted his teeth, his muscles taut like steel.
He tried to use his own flesh and blood to stop the torrent from the abyss.
However, the impacts did not stop.
The escape pod was like a leaf in a storm, tumbling and colliding amidst the raging water and constantly collapsing rock fragments.
Each violent tremor subjected Steve's body, perched atop the crack, to unimaginable pressure and impact.
He could clearly hear the cracking sound of his bones under the heavy pressure and feel the burning pain of his muscle fibers being torn apart.
Stark Industries' prized high-strength, hygienic, sealed deep-sea protective suits may be excellent at isolating contaminants, but they prove extremely fragile when it comes to withstanding such brute force impacts and deep-sea pressure.
"Warning! A new stress crack has appeared in the port hull!"
Jarvis's voice rang out again, coldly announcing a new disaster.
Steve's heart sank.
He turned his neck with difficulty, looking over his shoulder at the other side of the bulkhead.
A new, spiderweb-like crack was spreading across the metal surface at a visible speed, accompanied by a teeth-grinding "crunch".
The cold, viscous seawater seeped in through the tiny cracks, carrying a bone-chilling cold and an indescribable, sweet-smelling odor.
The air grew thinner and thinner, and each breath carried the metallic, bloody smell of his own blood.
The oxygen level displayed in his mask was slowly but steadily decreasing, and even more deadly was the pervasive, extreme cold of the deep sea, which was slowly eroding his body temperature and strength through the gaps in his tattered protective suit.
Sweat mixed with the seeping seawater soaked through his underwear, sticking to his skin in a sticky, cold way.
Exhaustion felt like a heavy lead weight, dragging down every nerve in his body. Gray spots caused by lack of oxygen began to appear at the edge of his vision, and the tinnitus grew louder and louder.
"Bucky..."
A name flashed vaguely through his mind, carrying with it endless longing and a sense of helpless sorrow.
Is it really... going to end here? In this way, swallowed by darkness?
He struggled against the ever-spreading cold and dizziness, his back pressed tightly against the crack, and the excruciating pain from each impact became a stimulus to keep him conscious.
"The rich rely on technology,"
Chang Wei muttered to himself, "The poor rely on mutation... Captain, that's an irrefutable truth in the Marvel Universe. I gave Tony a push on his path of evolution, now it's your turn. How boring would it be if the Civil War were one-sided?"
His thoughts, like invisible tentacles, had already penetrated deep into that chaotic deep-sea battlefield.
On a level imperceptible to ordinary people, a subtle yet powerful force is enveloping the seawater surrounding Steve's escape pod.
