Chapter 1584: The factory manager who doesn’t understand technology is good at making cakes

Li Feng doesn't understand technology.

But he had seen many kinds of radars in later generations, such as those in the shape of a big pot cover, a half-moon shape, a spherical shape, and even in a certain chicken-eating game, there was a huge, real-life super-large radar in a military base.

Of course, there are more than just these fixed on the ground. For example, when a fighter jet opens its nose, there is a radar inside, a flat radar made up of small squares. There are also rod-shaped radars that rotate continuously on the top of ships in the ocean.

There are many types of radars, and Li Feng doesn't understand their operating principles, but he knows that this thing is very useful. For example, the U2 that was shot down in the suburbs of Shanghai must have been inseparable from the early detection by radar.

If fighter jets and missiles are regarded as sharp spears, then radar technology can be called a shield, one for attack and the other for defense.

His requirements did not seem high. There was no need to detect fighter planes of unknown location in the sky, nor was there any need to search for ships in the sea. Artillery reconnaissance radar was only used for the game between the two armies.

When the two armies were fighting, the battle lines of both sides were undoubtedly very clear. If one side was on this side, the other side must be on the opposite side, which was the known enemy garrison position.

But what is unknown is where exactly the enemy's artillery positions will be deployed.

Artillery positions must be concealed, whether it is a camouflage net or a semi-underground bunker, which will undoubtedly be difficult for reconnaissance personnel and reconnaissance aircraft.

Moreover, the current artillery range is within the range of ten to twenty kilometers, and very few are actually deployed at the forefront of the battle line. Most artillery positions are located behind the frontline positions, allowing the front-line infantry to play a certain defensive role.

This means that if you want to scout the enemy's artillery positions and obtain their coordinates, you need to send out reconnaissance personnel to pass through many checkpoints before you can succeed. It is also possible that the positions have already been moved due to time delays.

Artillery detection radar does not require the above steps. It only needs to wait for the enemy's artillery to fire and then reversely infer the trajectory of the warhead. Within 20 seconds, it can directly obtain the coordinates of the enemy's artillery, assemble its own artillery group, and immediately launch fire counterattack.

Even if it is just a rough coordinate, the overall coverage of a dozen artillery pieces in an artillery battalion greatly increases the probability of hitting the target. It is equivalent to adding a pair of eyes for the artillery. The faster these eyes can discover the target, the greater the benefit will be.

You know, on the battlefield, the most common thing is not gunfire and bullets, but artillery shells of various calibers. After a round of firing by the enemy, the artillery position is gone and there is a lack of fire support, which will greatly increase the difficulty of defense for the enemy and greatly reduce the death rate of your own soldiers.

Li Feng understood the principle of the rise and fall of one thing. The advancement of science and technology and the lighting up of the technology tree will undoubtedly play a decisive role on the battlefield. Nuclear weapons cannot be used in warfare, but conventional wars are fought based on the technological gap.

"Artillery reconnaissance radar~!"

Chai Yiyuan muttered the name of this radar which had not yet been born. He had a high level of education. If it was according to Director Li's description, this radar would indeed have a lot to do with artillery once it was born.

In his eyes, the Red Star Factory is currently mainly engaged in the production of vehicle-mounted artillery. Director Li came up with the idea of this artillery reconnaissance radar from the operating principle of radar, which does not seem too strange. However, there is currently no such radar in the country.

At least, as far as Chai Yiyuan knows, the radars currently under development are basically designed in accordance with the requirements put forward by the Air Force and partly in accordance with the requirements put forward by the Navy. The Army artillery does not really have any design requirements in this regard.

The first to propose this design requirement was not the military, nor the radar factory that proposed the research and development direction on its own, but rather the manufacturer of vehicle-mounted artillery.

"Well, do we have any of this at the moment?"

Li Feng looked at Chai Yiyuan, whose eyes were confused, excited, and depressed at times, and he didn't know how much harm he had caused to his heart in just such a short moment.

"No, as far as I know, there is no such type of radar. You are the first one to mention it~!"

Chai Yiyuan looked at his new factory director with a strange look, feeling unspeakably uncomfortable in his heart. It seemed that his factory director really did not understand technology, but the idea he proposed was a new research direction that no one in their industry had ever thought of.

It's so terrifying, and maybe this is why Director Li, who is so young, can become the head of the factory. If this conjecture can be realized, it will undoubtedly greatly improve the combat effectiveness of the artillery.

“Is it difficult to develop?”

As expected, Li Feng remembered that the introduction of British products into China had to wait until after the 1980s.

"Yes, it's quite difficult~!"

"The radar has very little time to react, the reflection area of the shell is too small, and the amount of data required to calculate the trajectory is huge~!"

Chai Yiyuan lit another cigarette. The planes in the sky and the ships on the sea reflected the electromagnetic waves emitted by the radar over a much larger area than the artillery shells.

The circular reflection area of a conical shell may only be about 0.1 square meters on the front, and even the reflection area on the side is estimated to be only 0.23 square meters. In comparison, the reflection area of a fighter plane or a warship is tens of square meters or hundreds of square meters. The reflection area of a shell warhead is too small.

You should know that in the normal working environment of the radar, this scattering cross-section will usually be regarded as ground clutter, ocean waves, and birds in the sky, and the signal is weak, which will be automatically filtered out by the instrument.

The smaller the reflection area, the weaker the signal. The weaker the signal, the closer the radar detection distance is, which is similar to the human eye observing objects. The smaller the object, the easier it is to be ignored by the eyes and brain.

This is only one-third of the problem. Even if the radar wave reflected from the warhead is successfully intercepted, the amount of data for subsequent ballistic calculations will not be a small number.

How to simulate the trajectory of a fired artillery shell and calculate the coordinates based on the trajectory is another difficult problem. Some veterans can judge the approximate distance based on the sound of the fired artillery shell, but the radar has no ears.

Chai Yiyuan's brain was calculating furiously at this moment, and he even forgot to smoke his lit cigarette for a moment. The floating white mist enveloped his head, as if the CPU was about to smoke.

A cannonball is not like an airplane. As long as it is in the sky, the airplane will continuously transmit electromagnetic waves to locate the airplane's current altitude and position.

After a shell is fired, it can stay in the air for only 20 seconds at a long distance. If the distance is closer, it may only stay in the air for 10 seconds, or even just a few seconds. The current machines cannot meet the computing requirements of the deduction.

"In theory, yes, but in practice, no. It's difficult to achieve with our current technology. This requires a calculator. Do you know what a calculator is?"

When the cigarette burned to the end and Chai Yiyuan's fingers were burned, he quickly threw away the cigarette, picked up a pencil, and began to draw different trajectories of the shells.

Straight line, arc, parabola, each has a different calculation formula, conic section, geometry, opening, and the formula L = n×π× r÷180...

"Look, different curves~!"

"Well, I haven't been to college, so I don't understand?"

Chai Yiyuan's face was flushed with excitement as he wrote down various professional calculation methods on the drawings. However, Director Li was very honest. He was terrible at math, not only in his past life but also in this life. He could recognize every letter and symbol on the drawings, but when they were combined together, it was a bit difficult for him.

"Hoo~!"

Chai Yiyuan, who was still excited and impatient, suddenly widened his eyes after being hit hard by his own factory director. He looked at Li Feng, then looked at what he had written. The pencil lead was almost broken by him.

"I'm not a professional technician, nor an expert professor. I'm just a factory manager~!"

The ideas proposed by unprofessional people are more sharp and far-sighted than those of professionals like him, but they are also more unacceptable.

"I know what a calculator is. It's hand-cranked, click-click-click, and it can calculate the results. What you mean by a large amount of calculations is that after interception, different trajectories may require different calculation formulas. If the machine cannot complete the calculation, what if a person does it?"

"As long as the radar can intercept the reflected wave of the warhead and display the real-time height of the trajectory on the screen, the subsequent calculations can be completely handed over to humans. There are millions of troops, so there must be a lot of top students, right?"

"Although there are not many hand-cranked computers at the moment, if you want to apply for one or two, I can apply for them. Anyway, our vehicle-mounted artillery will have to conduct shooting experiments, and we can get first-hand data. I can even apply for shooting data of other types of artillery for you~!"

Li Feng spread his hands. Problems can be solved step by step. He has been working for a long time and knows that one cannot achieve everything in one go. For vehicle-mounted artillery, it is still a gradual process from the initial combination of the gun and the vehicle, to manual operation and finally to automation.

With the ballistic data of different artillery, as long as the radar can complete the preliminary work and the later calculation work, the current machines cannot do it, so people will be asked to solve it, apply the ballistics, and then apply the formula. The only difference is that the calculation time of people will be slower than that of machines.

The formation of anything requires a process, from nothing to something, from something to precision. Even if it is just data calculated by personnel, it lays the foundation for the subsequent accumulation of technology.

Integrated circuits and chips can solve problems that vacuum tubes cannot do. The current hand-cranked computers are definitely not comparable to the electronic computers of the future.

Li Feng just wanted to take this first step. It was only 1966, so he was not in a hurry. There was still plenty of time. If five years were not enough, then ten years would do. Even if it took fifteen years, it would only be the 1980s.

"Chai Yiyuan, I believe you can figure it out. I'm not in a hurry now. You are our factory's expert in radar. I'll give you this idea. You can do preliminary research first. Once you have a detailed report, I can help you apply for personnel and set up your own research room~!"

"You have to believe that I will help you no matter what difficulties you have. Think about it again. Once you get it out, in this direction, when the artillery reconnaissance radar is mentioned, that will be your name. Everyone in the artillery will thank you~!"
