Chapter 1564 Free Will and Determinism
If their previous understanding of Ye Zhen's strength was limited to the fact that Ye Zhen was very powerful.
Like a god.
But that was until the last time the calamity star appeared.
After Ye Zhen resolved the disaster that could have destroyed the entire planet, the catastrophe was averted.
Only then did everyone realize the tip of the iceberg of Ye Zhen's true strength.
It turns out that Ye Zhen, who is usually so approachable, is actually as powerful as a god.
They had imagined countless times just how powerful Ye Zhen really was.
But when Ye Zhen reappeared in front of them.
They then realized that their previous assumptions about Ye Zhen's strength had been a gross underestimation.
Even the projection of a higher-dimensional life form couldn't do anything to Ye Zhen.
"I know everyone really wants to know the truth about all of this."
The existence of ancient civilizations should be known to everyone by now.
Regardless of which civilization left behind these traces.
Or let's talk about what I said to everyone on the show.
All of this demonstrates that we humans are not the only intelligent civilization on this blue planet.
Countless intelligent civilizations have emerged on Earth before us.
These civilizations intertwined and overlapped on our blue planet.
Every civilization may start from scratch.
It is also possible that they inherited the legacy of the previous civilization and continued to develop.
The earliest civilizations I mentioned, whether they were dinosaur-men or underwater civilizations.
In fact, they all existed in the past.
It's just that this has been repeating itself endlessly on Earth.
The change of civilizations is a perfectly normal thing.
But then civilizations were discovered, and everything they experienced was revealed.
Everything in this world is predetermined.
Just like a pre-written script in a movie.
A script? Everything pre-arranged?
What does it mean?
Some viewers seemed not to understand what Ye Zhen was saying.
However, some people did think of it.
"The existence of free will?"
"Is our world actually a pre-prepared script?"
"I've always felt this way, otherwise why would there be such a thing as fate?"
Some viewers had a background in philosophy.
It is the understanding of the existence of free will.
In other words, do we actually have free will?
You might think, of course we have free will.
Do I want to eat? And what do I want to eat?
Isn't it a decision I make myself?
However, neural determinism tells us that the brain makes a decision 350ms before conscious perception.
In other words, we make a decision first, and then the brain develops its own perception.
Simply put, let's take the action of drinking water as an example.
In most people's understanding, we first develop the awareness that we want to drink water.
Then it drives our brain neurons to perform such an action.
The brain gives commands to the hands to move, and then it lets us drink water.
But actually, this happened before we even had the awareness that we wanted to drink water.
The brain has already made the decision; the decision to drink water comes later.
In fact, this idea has already been discussed in physics.
The most famous one is Newton.
Newton was one of the biggest supporters of mechanical cosmology back then.
They believe the world is a cold, mechanical system.
Everything is perfectly precise, everything is predetermined.
Knowing the initial conditions, the laws of physics are completely determined.
That future is unique and entirely predictable.
This is actually the existence of Laplace's Demon.
That's what physicists thought back then.
Because of Newton's three laws of motion in classical mechanics.
Everyone felt that physics had reached its limit. There were no more secrets in the entire universe.
Some Western audiences are the most aware of this.
"Everything is God's arrangement; I've known all along that the Bible is right."
"Everything is arranged by God; it's all just a test for us."
"Was that projection God himself? I knew it was God."
That strange phenomenon happened to different people.
Different people will have different thoughts after seeing it.
Whether humans possess free will has been debated for thousands of years.
Although humans are reluctant to admit it, they have always believed that free will truly exists.
Otherwise, everything we do will be meaningless.
Because if everything is a script, if it has already been set up.
Does that mean all my efforts are meaningless?
Later, as physics developed, it entered the microscopic realm.
Particles in the quantum world possess true randomness.
In other words, we cannot confirm the existence of a particle while also knowing its momentum.
This is Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.
The state of particles is fundamentally uncertain, and the future cannot be fully predicted.
Microscopic particles are probabilistic.
This was something that Einstein could not accept back then.
The underlying nature of the entire world is uncertain randomness.
That's why Einstein said something so classic.
"God doesn't play dice!"
It is clear that Einstein also had limitations.
It has now been proven that the quantum world exists and is indeed full of randomness.
In other words, God likes to roll dice.
However, some people now believe that...
Even if the microscopic particles in the quantum world are random.
This does not mean that humans possess free will on a macro level.
Some people, however, felt that Ye Zhen was talking nonsense.
How could humans not have free will?
"Are you trying to say that everything we've done has been in vain? Meaningless?"
"Knowing the will of Heaven is easy, but defying it is difficult. Is this what the ancients wanted to tell us?"
This is something they absolutely do not want to admit.
Ye Zhen knew that this was very difficult for them to accept.
But that is the harsh reality.
"Do you all think that what I said was too absolute?" Ye Zhen seemed to know what everyone was talking about.
"Personal will is actually not important at all."
Throughout history, countless people have been nothing more than nameless nobodys.
Nobody cares what you've done or what you've eaten.
Individuals seem to be completely unimportant.
You feel you have the power to decide what you eat today.
What kind of cup should be used?
You feel like you made the decision yourself.
In fact, everything was predetermined.
These minor personal actions are completely insignificant.
The important thing is the overall direction of civilization.
Human free will has its limits.
Why is free will so important?
From an ethical and legal perspective, is it reasonable to punish crime if free will does not exist?
After all, this wasn't his wish?
If life is a pre-written script, do efforts and responsibilities lose their value?
Is everything we have meaningless?
It was all destined.
At the level of artificial intelligence, if humans lack free will, is it possible for strong AI to possess "will"? (End of Chapter)
