Chapter 365 What's wrong with you?

This time, however, the unexpected happened before tomorrow.

When Shen Manzhi was woken up, she was drenched in sweat, as if she had been pulled out of a nightmare, and she was still somewhat dazed.

Qin Yanfeng had already sat up, the light from his phone screen reflecting on his somber face. "Something's happened to the Shen family."

Her eyes flickered slightly, and her mind went blank for a moment.

I then received two messages.

An anonymous text message said the Shen family's house was on fire.

One message was sent by Shen Duanwen: "Manzhi, Dad wants to see you."

At four o'clock in the morning, half of the Shen family villa was engulfed in flames. Two fire trucks were parked by the roadside. Kind neighbors nearby called the police and vividly described the situation to a few scattered people around.

"I got up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night and saw the house across the street on fire. At first, I thought I was seeing things, so I quickly woke up my husband and we went to the balcony to take a look."

The neighbor who called the police was an auntie who was nearly sixty years old, but she spoke with a strong voice, "Oh my, in just a short while, the fire suddenly shot up really high, starting from the west corner of the first floor, and then it quickly spread to the second floor. I was so scared that I immediately called the police!"

"Is there still an old lady living here?" The woman standing next to her asked with a worried expression. "With such a big fire, I wonder if anyone was hurt."

"The ambulance is here!"

Accompanying the ambulance was a black Bentley.

Before Qin Yanfeng had even brought the car to a complete stop, Shen Manzhi, the passenger in the front seat, unbuckled her seatbelt and ran out.

The fire truck arrived in time, and although the fire had spread to the second-floor bedroom, they were still able to bring the people out.

The fire commander turned around and saw a blur of motion flash past him. He hesitated for half a second before chasing after it, shouting, "Hey, we can't go in!"

"Duan Wen...cough...Duan Wen, hang in there, the ambulance is here!"

The woman's cries were filled with sorrow, making those around her feel sorry for her. "Cough cough..."

A figure rushed up, grabbed her, and asked, "Is there anyone else inside?"

Xie Yulan looked up, her eyes brimming with tears. In the firelight, she paused, recognizing the person before her. Her face instantly twisted with resentment. "Shen Manzhi!"

Shen Manzhi only turned her head to confirm that the man on the firefighter's back was Shen Duanwen, then turned around and tried to rush inside, but was pushed by Xie Yulan, "You jinx, how dare you come back!"

Supported by the firefighters beside her, she used the momentum to slap Shen Manzhi hard, but a strong force grabbed her wrist and dragged her outside. Shen Manzhi coldly questioned, "Where is Grandma?"

Xie Yulan's expression was a mixture of fear and resentment as she raised her chin and said, "With such a big fire, why don't you go in and find her yourself!"

Shen Manzhi pushed her away and tried to run inside, but another force grabbed her wrist. She broke free abruptly, her eyes turning back with a icy look. "Let go!"

"Calm down!"

Qin Yanfeng pulled her back and held her close, gently patting her back. "There's no one inside anymore. The old lady moved into a nursing home before the New Year. It's just the two of them living here, so don't worry."

He overheard people talking about it when he caught up, so he made a phone call to confirm.

Shen Manzhi pursed her lips and remained silent, but her body turned to the side of the stairwell entrance. If Qin Yanfeng hadn't stopped her, she would have rushed in the next second.

"A family member, please!"

The doctor from the ambulance called out anxiously. Shen Manzhi took a step forward, but Xie Yulan shoved her away. The woman replied in a hoarse voice, "Coming!"

Choked by the smoke, she coughed and ran a few steps, then turned back and glared fiercely at Shen Manzhi, "You ingrate!"

Qin Yanfeng frowned. He turned to look at Shen Manzhi, who was standing still, looking up at the direction from which thick smoke was billowing.

The last spark flickered in the depths of the villa. As the thick fog dissipated, the villa's attic was reduced to ruins. Black water mixed with charcoal ash flowed down the white walls and over the lawn, submerging the few clusters of primroses that had just bloomed in the yard, leaving only scattered white petals.

Just then, the fire commander came looking for the person in question. Qin Yanfeng raised his hand to signal them to move to the other side to cooperate with the fire department's investigation.

The fire started in the kitchen on the west side of the first floor of the villa, initially suspected to be caused by a gas leak. Flames shot out of the window and spread to the storage room on the second floor, then to the adjacent study, the master bedroom, and finally to the third floor.

Only the couple was at home. Shen Duanwen collapsed in the bedroom, while Xie Yulan escaped unharmed in the master bedroom.

Qin Yanfeng put down his pen and turned his head to look.

If I remember correctly, the storage room on the second floor was originally Shen Manzhi's room, and he had been inside it once.

The slender figure in his field of vision turned around calmly, and paused when she met Qin Yanfeng's gaze.

He walked quickly over, stepping across the damp waste liquid on the lawn, and stood in front of Shen Manzhi.

The last remaining white primrose at her feet was completely stained and submerged by the waste liquid, just like all the traces Shen Manzhi had left here were erased.

"Should we go to the hospital?" he asked.

Shen Manzhi snapped out of her daze and nodded.

She appeared calm; the fierceness she had displayed when she first grabbed Xie Yulan and questioned her had vanished completely, leaving only the chill of the night or some unknown coldness enveloping her. As she approached him, she tilted her head slightly and said, "Let's go."

The last syllable of her voice was so soft it was almost inaudible, and Qin Yanfeng looked down at her quietly.

Shen Manzhi's breathing became heavier, her shoulders drooped slightly, and she leaned closer to him, nestling in his arms.

It wasn't just her who was erased; everything, good and bad, from her youth was buried in this charred mess.

Qin Yanfeng gently wrapped his arms around her waist and rubbed against her.

The kind neighbors outside the courtyard and along the roadside had all dispersed, and a black Phaeton with ordinary license plates was parked in the distance.

Qin Juan watched the two figures slowly frown, recalling what he had said to Shen Manzhi that afternoon, and suddenly felt that he had gone a bit too far.

He rolled up the car window and drove away from the scene, heading towards APS in the city. The private room was unusually welcomed by its owner, who then relayed the message to the shop's owner.

Qin Juan had just opened a bottle of wine when he turned his head and saw Qin Deyang push open the door and enter.

He unbuttoned a few buttons on his collar, leaned back on the sofa with a rather dashing air, propped one leg up on the crystal tabletop, and, holding a bottle of wine in one hand and a glass in the other, poured himself a drink and downed it in one gulp. Qin Deyang watched silently as he finished half a bottle of red wine. "What's wrong with you?"

Qin Juan stared at the crystal chandelier overhead. "You think A Yanyan won't get a divorce?"

They came over at 5 a.m. to do this.

Qin Deyang's expression gradually faded.

nerve.

The sky was still dark, but the city center hospital was brightly lit, and the red lettering on the ceiling of the emergency room was particularly glaring.

Shen Luo was out having a gathering with friends and was resting at a hotel at night when she was summoned directly to the hospital. She sat with Xie Yulan on a caregiver chair in the corridor, looking dejected.

Hearing footsteps, she turned around and saw two people standing side by side.

"Shen Manzhi?"

Xie Yulan saw the person coming out from around the corner after hearing the sound. Her expression twisted for a moment before she stood up and quickly walked up to the person. "What are you doing here?"

Shen Manzhi remained expressionless, not even glancing at her.

"I haven't seen you come back for a year, but now that something's happened at home, you're pretending to be all friendly and coming over."

Xie Yulan became more and more agitated as she spoke, but her years of being a wealthy housewife made her maintain her composure, which only added to the sarcasm in her words, "Are you secretly hoping something happens to your father so you can rush back and claim your inheritance?"

The sharp and vicious words stunned even Shen Luo, who was standing nearby. She grabbed her mother's hand and whispered, "Mom, what are you saying! Dad will be fine. Don't talk nonsense."

Perhaps due to her unstable emotions, Xie Yulan spoke without thinking, only concerned with provoking Shen Manzhi. Now that she realized what was happening, the anger in her chest turned into a flushed face. However, she couldn't lose her composure in front of the younger generation, so she stiffened her neck and said to Shen Luo, "The fire tonight was suspicious. If something happens to your father, Shen Manzhi will be the first to be implicated!"

Qin Yanfeng shielded Shen Manzhi behind him, his tall figure standing in front of the woman, his eyes lowered, his imposing aura intimidating, "Be mindful of your words."

Shen Manzhi glanced at her.

Somewhat wary of the person before her, Xie Yulan pursed her lips and remained silent. Shen Luo glanced at the man, not in the mood for further conversation, and simply pulled Xie Yulan aside, asking, "Mom, what exactly happened?"

Xie Yulan turned her head and looked coldly at Shen Manzhi, "If it weren't for her, your father wouldn't have suddenly investigated that filthy past, and it wouldn't have led to his death!"

Shen Manzhi looked over with her cold eyes, took a step forward to Xie Yulan, and said with suppressed hostility, "Explain yourself, what are you investigating?"

Xie Yulan was pressed closer, her voice caught in her throat. Thinking of the man lying in the emergency room, she squeezed Shen Luo's hand and said, "Of course it's about your mother!"

Shen Manzhi frowned, wanting to ask something more, when the door to the emergency room was pushed open, and medical staff pushed out a stretcher.

"Duan Wen!"

Xie Yulan ran over and saw Shen Duanwen lying unconscious with a pale face. She cried out, "Doctor, what happened?"

The head nurse, perhaps unable to bear it any longer, hurriedly said, "Family members, don't get agitated. The person is fine. Just keep an eye on them for the next couple of days."

Shen Luo's eyes were red. She glanced at the ambulance bed and helped Xie Yulan up. "Mom, Dad has been saved. Let him rest for a bit. Don't worry."

The doctor took off his mask and came out from behind. Upon learning that the person was alright, Xie Yulan quickly went over to inquire about the situation.

Qin Yanfeng turned his head to look at the person beside him.

When Shen Duanwen was wheeled out of the emergency room, Shen Manzhi moved slightly, then stood still and watched as Xie Yulan and her daughter embraced him, expressing their deep affection.

Then the family followed the medical staff to take Shen Duanwen to the ward, and the corridor returned to silence.

Qin Yanfeng hooked her hand with his.

Shen Manzhi turned to look at him, lightly brushing her fingertip against the back of his hand. "I'm fine."

He pursed his lips, walked closer to her, and looked worried.

"I'm really fine," Shen Manzhi breathed a sigh of relief, but her gaze was slightly fixed. "It's just that I don't feel anything. Logically speaking, I should be as sad as they are after something like this happened."

After all, he was her father.

Qin Yanfeng didn't say anything, he just pulled her into his arms.

"Shen Manzhi."

Shen Luo stood at the corner, clutching her handbag, her expression somewhat unnatural when she saw the two embracing. "Dad wants to see you."

Shen Duanwen fell into a coma due to excessive smoke inhalation. Even after being rescued, his mental state remained poor. He had difficulty even lifting his eyelids, and when he called Shen Manzhi's name, he could only utter a breathy sound before coughing.

She stood in front of the hospital bed without getting close.

My impression of older people is that they are always dressed in suits and ties and are full of energy.

At this moment, he seemed to be hanging by a thread, wanting to see her more closely.

She pursed her lips slightly, not intending to stay any longer. "You should take good care of yourself."

"Manzhi, your mother... cough cough!"

Shen Duanwen tried to get up by supporting himself with his hands on his sides, but he couldn't muster the strength.

He always knew what she cared about.

"Stop investigating your mother's affairs..."

Shen Manzhi stopped in her tracks as she was about to turn and leave, looking at him indifferently.

Recalling what Xie Yulan had just said, I roughly understood the cause of the matter.

Was the fire caused by human intervention?

Shen Duanwen's gaze faltered slightly. He leaned back and looked at a point in the void, a bitter smile on his face. "After all these years, they still... refuse to let anyone go."
