Chapter 2622 A makeshift troupe (Second update, please subscribe)
Over the next few days, this special operations team, comprised of KGB and Stasi personnel, continued to operate near the air force base.
Through East German Stasi personnel inside the base, they were able to pinpoint the patrol shift changes to the minute and unexpectedly discovered a crucial piece of information—the base was scheduled to implement a comprehensive rat extermination plan on Saturday. To prevent police dogs from accidentally ingesting poison bait, all police dogs would be temporarily confined to their kennels, which were located far from the maintenance hangar. This undoubtedly presented an excellent opportunity for action.
"It's Saturday!"
Andrei immediately made the decision, and then they began preparations for Saturday's operation.
Lanming drove a dilapidated truck under the guise of transporting agricultural products, repeatedly scouting the evacuation route and confirming that there were only two people on duty at the checkpoints along the way in the early morning, which was easy to deal with.
On Saturday evening, the four met again at the operation's rendezvous point—a temporarily rented warehouse. "Everything has been confirmed. The base will carry out rat extermination as planned today. To prevent the police dogs from accidentally ingesting poison bait, all the police dogs will be put into their kennels before 10 p.m. tonight, as is customary."
The kennel is a full 800 meters from the maintenance hangar, separated by two walls, which will not hinder movement in any way.
Nop placed a hand-drawn map of the base's interior on the table, lightly tapping the markings for the kennels and hangars twice with his fingertip, and then introduced:
"This means that we don't have to worry about being tracked by police dogs throughout the entire process of infiltrating and transporting the goods, which reduces the risk by half."
In addition, the patrol team changes shifts between 1 and 2 a.m., creating a ten-minute window of opportunity during which we can infiltrate.
As a Stasi agent infiltrated within the base, Noop had an intimate knowledge of the situation inside. He paused, then added:
“I’ve already made a copy of the key to the hangar’s back door. We can cut the barbed wire fence on the west side. It’s close to the road, which is perfect for both transporting planes and evacuating. Plus, it’s a blind spot for surveillance.”
Andrei nodded, his gaze sweeping across the map before finally settling on the location of the kennel. Then he said:
"That's it."
Then he pointed to the structural disassembly diagram of the drone and said:
"This 'Searcher' drone weighs about 600 kilograms. The main body of the aircraft is not large, but the wingspan is ten meters, making it impossible to move directly."
We must first remove the wings, and then load the fuselage and wings onto the trolleys separately.
Linnowski, you are in charge of operating the disassembly tools. Make sure to complete the disassembly within half an hour, and be careful not to damage any core components. Nop and I will be responsible for the transportation. During the window period, quickly move the disassembled parts out of the hangar.
"Lanming, arrive at the rendezvous point outside the west fence at 1:50 AM sharp, start the vehicle and wait. We will transport the drone components out before 2:30 AM, taking advantage of the gap between patrol shifts."
After the tasks were assigned, all that was left was preparation: specialized dismantling tools, hydraulic shears to cut through barbed wire, miniature communicators hidden in collars, and several silenced pistols—although the police dogs had been put out of service, they still needed to be prepared for unexpected personnel patrols.
Nop, a logistics worker at the base, was the first to enter the base. He passed through the gate smoothly with his pass and went straight to the maintenance hangar. After confirming that everything was normal in the vicinity, he first patrolled around the hangar to make sure that the patrol team had changed shifts and the new patrol team had not yet arrived. Then he quickly used the key to open the back door of the hangar and slipped inside.
At 12:30 a.m., under the cover of darkness, Andrei and Linowski sneaked into the base through a gap in the western fence. Following the route marked by Nop, they avoided surveillance and patrols and successfully reached the back door of the maintenance hangar.
Nop was already waiting behind the door. The two exchanged a glance and then walked into the hangar together. Inside the hangar were three Searcher drones, their black and gray paint gleaming coldly in the dim light.
They selected the aircraft closest to the back door, and Linowski immediately took out his dismantling tools and began disassembling the wings. The sound of the tools was muffled by the pre-prepared soundproofing cloth, so it barely carried. Andrei, meanwhile, kept watch at the hangar entrance, keeping a close eye on the patrol's location information coming through the communicator—Lanminger was lying prone in the grass outside the base with a silent sniper rifle, providing them with cover.
A dozen minutes later, the drone's wings were successfully removed. The three men lifted the fuselage and wings onto a trolley that had been hidden in the corner of the hangar. Although the drone was heavy, the trolley made no noise when it was pushed.
"The patrol will be here in ten minutes. We need to get out of here immediately," Andrei whispered a reminder.
The three pushed the cart quickly along the path behind the hangar. Ranger was already waiting at the end of the path, holding a silent rifle to protect them. He would fire immediately if there was any unusual movement.
The three men proceeded cautiously, avoiding several patrol routes, and successfully reached the western fence. Andrei gently pulled with hydraulic shears, creating a gap in the loosened wire mesh large enough for a cart to pass through. They quickly pushed the cart out, then re-secured the wire mesh with thin wire, leaving no visible signs of damage.
Outside the fence, Lanminger was already waiting there in a large truck.
"Quick, get the stuff onto the car!"
Lanming urged in a low voice.
The four men worked together to use the lift next to the truck to lift the fuselage and wings onto the truck. Because the wings were too long, even when placed at an angle, half of them still protruded outside the truck bed.
Lanminger took out a dark carpet, wrapped the exposed part tightly, and secured it with rope. From the outside, it looked like ordinary cargo loaded on the truck.
By this time, the sky was beginning to lighten, and soon pedestrians would appear on the road; they would have to leave as soon as possible.
Lanminger started the truck, and the vehicle slowly drove away.
Andrei and Linowski changed into pre-prepared civilian clothes and left in two separate taxis, while Nop returned to the base to continue playing the role of his logistics manager, covering up all traces.
The truck was traveling on the highway in the early morning when it encountered a checkpoint where two officers stopped the vehicle for inspection.
What's on the truck?
"A staff member on duty asked. Lanmingge calmly took out the forged shipping document and said with a smile, "It's some industrial parts, this is the shipping document."
The staff on duty checked the documents and then looked through the window at the tightly wrapped goods inside the truck. Finding nothing amiss, they waved for the truck to pass.
Lanming secretly breathed a sigh of relief and gently pressed the accelerator, increasing the vehicle's speed. Around noon, the truck arrived at an abandoned factory, which served as their temporary transfer point.
Hans and Linowski were already waiting there. The four of them worked together to unload the drone parts from the truck and put them into a hidden warehouse inside the factory.
Over the next few days, they packaged the drones in the warehouse, simply putting them into wooden crates. Each crate was labeled "Commercial Sample".
They then transported the wooden crates to East Germany through the KGB's secret smuggling channels. The transport went exceptionally smoothly; because the labels indicated they were commercial samples, they were not subject to rigorous checks along the way.
Thus, the wooden crates labeled "commercial samples" arrived smoothly in East Berlin and were subsequently loaded onto a special train bound for Moscow.
It wasn't until this point that a military doctor accidentally discovered a hole in the barbed wire, which drew their attention. After investigation, they discovered that one of their "Searcher" drones was missing!
While the intelligence and security services of the Federal Republic of Germany were involved, investigators from the SEA Security Service stationed in Bonn also joined the investigation.
After arriving at the military base and investigating the hangar and surrounding area, the two men stood speechless before the large hole in the barbed wire that hadn't been discovered for several days.
"This world is a fucking shoddy operation."
Li Yonghui couldn't help but curse. Zhao Fei, standing next to him, couldn't help but agree.
"You know, the most absurd thing about this isn't that someone cut such a big hole in the barbed wire and it wasn't discovered until several days later, but that a plane went missing for several days and nobody even knew about it."
When Zhao Fei said these words, his expression was very amused.
Some things were completely beyond their imagination.
"Can you imagine? It was a military base. A few thieves brazenly came in and stole an airplane, loading it onto a bomb cart and swaggering out of there."
I can hardly describe it... You have to understand, that was an airplane over 6 meters long and weighing several hundred kilograms.
Li Yonghui really didn't know how to describe his inner thoughts.
"Although it's a drone, it's still an airplane after all."
"So, just like you said, this world is a makeshift operation. Hmm... They just let someone brazenly steal a drone, and even a huge plane disappeared from the hangar for days without anyone noticing. Does that mean no one cares about public property?"
Zhao Fei shrugged helplessly. Sometimes the whole world is the same, whether it's the East or the West.
Most of the time, people only care about their own things, and as for public property—very few people care at all.
"So what do we do now?"
Li Yonghui frowned, then lowered his voice and said:
"Those who infiltrated such a military base to steal the drones are definitely not ordinary thieves; they must be KGB spies. In other words, our drones are now in Russian hands."
As the head of the Security Bureau's Bonn office, Li Yonghui was well aware of the seriousness of the matter.
Although those drones were sold to West Germany and thus became West German assets, they still involved military secrets, and even SEA military secrets.
This is the fundamental reason why the Federal Republic of Germany invited them to participate in the investigation.
It wasn't to get them to catch each other, but to show them – look, I've invited you all to come and investigate together, we're doing our best in this matter.
The subtext is that we are powerless to do anything about losing the plane.
"Well—only God knows. Several days have passed already. If nothing unexpected happens, the plane should be in East Berlin by now."
As Li Yonghui said this, his brows furrowed. If the items reached East Berlin, there was no way they could prevent them from falling into the hands of the Soviets, and thus no way they could stop the Russians from obtaining a large amount of information through that drone.
"Has it been reported back home?"
"It has already been reported, and the military should be aware of the situation, but we don't know how they will respond."
Just as he finished speaking, a West German intelligence officer hurried over and said directly to them:
"Gentlemen, something has happened in East Berlin."
