The Glory of the Seven Gods of Ice and Fire
Chapter 267: Beneficiaries of the War of Succession
Chapter 267 Extra: Beneficiaries of the Succession War (18k)
The Wars of the Succession of the Dynasty is perhaps a major event that the history of the known world cannot skip for hundreds or even thousands of years. Although this war did not completely destroy and reshape the world order like the Age of Bleeding and Aegon's Conquest, it still drastically changed the world.
From the death of the King of Conquerors to the time when Tollet took control of the kingship, in less than four years, the fate of many individuals, families and even regions changed irreversibly: many reigns that were once thought to last forever were ended, and replaced by new faces; on the other hand, some ancient emblems still flew on the battle flags, but their owners were completely different from their ancestors.
In this chapter, the author will focus on two parts: "Beneficiaries of the War of Succession" and "Losers of the War of Succession", and give a brief account of those noble families that prospered or declined in the civil war over the Iron Throne, to help readers of this book have a brief and accurate understanding of the subsequent history of these families.
Beneficiaries of the Wars of the Successors
1. House Lannister
Since the marriage with the Baratheons at the end of the War of the Usurper and the decisive move to participate in the Great Expedition early on, the Lannister family not only benefited greatly from the collapse of the Targaryen dynasty, but also became the largest and most powerful family in Westeros during the Age of the Conquerors.
The Lion's achievements were definitely due to a series of actions by the then head of the family, Tywin Lannister, and also because the Lannister family was very different from other Western noble families: a large number of family branches would not become alienated from the main branch as blood ties faded, but would unite around the main branch and form a close protective relationship. Therefore, although the Lannister family unfortunately encountered the worst family leader in its history during the War of Succession and was once on the verge of family division, they eventually stood on the side of the winners like a tumbler when everything settled.
When the deaths of Cersei Lannister and her sons Joffrey Baratheon and Tommen Baratheon were finally confirmed with the excavation of their remains, the Lannister family had already prospered again in the Tollett Dynasty, and the descendants of Tytos' sons had long been spread throughout the kingdom; in the era of King Corronus I, this huge family had split into four branches, ruling over three large territories. These lions who walked out of the mountains in the westerlies had gotten rid of the shadow of the War of Succession and regained their strong momentum in the new dynasty. May they never encounter a head of the family like Cersei Lannister again.
1. The Lannisters of Casterly Rock
As an important head of the Lannister family in its history, Tywin Lannister reversed the weak situation during the reign of his father Tytos and, with the help of his relatives and loyal ministers, pushed the Lannister family towards revival.
However, perhaps due to the influence of his own experience, while leading his family to prosperity, Tywin also sowed the seeds for the family's crisis: due to the influence of family education and living environment, Tywin's sons always tended to act in extremes, such as the long-term incest of the golden twins, Cersei Lannister's series of chaotic politics during the War of Succession, and Tyrion Lannister's patricide.
This series of events is a warning to the world of the importance of proper family education. Fortunately, Jaime and Cersei were not so stupid about the pregnancy issue and did not let the incestuous baby be born into the world. Otherwise, the rule of the Baratheon family and even the current Tollett family would be greatly impacted.
As of the time of writing, Casterly Rock is still ruled by the descendants of Tywin Lannister. After Jaime Lannister died in battle and Cersei Lannister was murdered, their dwarf brother Tyrion Lannister became the new Warden of the West and Duke of Casterly Rock.
However, although Tyrion Lannister was the candidate recognized by Hugo I, the Lannister clan and the westerly nobles in the War of Succession to overthrow Cersei Lannister, and he was also very capable, the shadow of patricide still loomed over him, and many people had seen Duke Tyrion looking unhappy on the Stone Throne. Therefore, when his daughter came of age and her ability was proven to be able to rule, Tyrion Lannister took the initiative to abdicate and handed over the titles of Warden of the West and Duke of Casterly Rock to his daughter.
In the days that followed, Tyrion lived in King's Landing and served as Hand of the King for a period of time. After the rule of King Corron I was consolidated, he left the capital of the kingdom and lived in seclusion in the mountains of northern Ossos with his wife, maintaining correspondence only with a few people.
Tyrion is comforted that his daughter is indeed a qualified ruler, which is also a point he often mentioned in the extant letters. Through the account of Tyrion's old friend Baron Bronn, we can believe that after overcoming the trough, this "little devil" of Lannister did spend the second half of his life peacefully.
2. The Lannisters of Volantis
Kevan Lannister, Tywin's eldest brother and right-hand man, tried his best to support the situation in the kingdom after his brother's death, and united the royal allies to launch the last counterattack of the Baratheon royal family. The time when Kevan controlled the Iron Throne is often considered to be the last chance of the Baratheon dynasty. When he died in the assassination of an unknown murderer, the Stag Dynasty was doomed. Fortunately, Kevan's marriage plan came into effect, and the Baratheon did not completely leave the center of the kingdom.
The tragic news of Kevan's assassination had an immeasurable impact on his branch. Because Kevan's eldest son Lancel Lannister chose to give up secular power during a series of political turmoil during the War of Succession, his branch was temporarily without an adult male to lead it, and had to rely on Kevan's widow Dona Swyft to support it. Cersei Lannister's hostility towards them further worsened the situation. At the most critical moment, this strong lady had to return to her parents' home with her two young sons and take shelter in Cornfort, and she was even almost killed by the invading River Bay army.
Fortunately, in the Tollett Dynasty, Kevan's children finally got their wish: because Kevan was the proposer and leader of the marriage between the Baratheon family and the Tollett family, when the Tollett family obtained the throne, Hugo I gave Kevan's branch generous treatment - his widow and descendants were taken to live in King's Landing, and the two young sons were well educated. When Volantis was captured in the fourth expedition of the kingdom, the adult William Lannister and Martin Lannister were appointed officials of the city, and their families moved here and formed part of the Eastern Lannister family.
3. The Lannisters of Lorne
As a seasoned general and brave knight, Tyget Lannister led the Lannister army to sweep the enemy and bandits in the Rhoyne River Basin during the Great Crusade. With this achievement, he was appointed as the ruler of the Great Domain of Upper Rhoyne by Robert Baratheon. In the following ten years, on the one hand, he continued to receive and settle immigrants from the westerlies, and on the other hand, he continued to fight against enemies from the northern mountains and eastern grasslands, especially the invasion of the centaurs and the counterattack in the east after the death of the King of Conquest. Under extremely unfavorable circumstances, Tyget Lannister still persisted in the middle reaches of the Rhoyne River. It was because of his efforts that the situation of the kingdom in the east was not completely corrupted.
As comrades who fought together during the expedition, Tyget Lannister and the Lannister branch of Rhoan have always maintained a good relationship with Hugo Tollett. In the era of Robert, they worked together with the nobles of Pentos and were wary of the Baratheon royal family's intention to centralize power. When foreign enemies approached the border, they also fought together to resist enemies from all directions. For this reason, when Hugo Tollett was elected as the Lord Commander of the East, he immediately appointed Tyget Lannister as the Governor of the Marches, the Inspector and the Lord of Upper and Lower Rhoan.
During the Tollett Dynasty, Tyget Lannister continued to hold these positions and became the commander of the kingdom's border guards; when the kingdom's fourth expedition ended and the great territories of Upper and Lower Rhoen were merged, his titles of "Lord of Upper and Lower Rhoen" and "Captain of Upper Rhoen" were revoked and replaced by "Captain of Rhoen".
By the time of Corron, the Lannister family of Rhone was still the dominant force along the middle and lower reaches of the Rhone River. Tyget Lannister loyally guarded the kingdom's eastern border. When he was too old to perform this position, his son Tyrek Lannister took over his father's office and title and continued to lead the kingdom's border guards.
4. The Lannisters of Sothoryos
Undoubtedly, since Stannis Baratheon, Gillian Lannister has been the best naval commander and governor of a great territory in the kingdom. His construction in Sothoryos has been recognized by the conquering king and the favored of the gods. Therefore, after the War of Succession, Gillian Lannister continued to serve as the commander of the Southern Fleet and the leader of Sothoryos under the order of Hugo I, and while resisting the front of the Sea Kingdom, he built this wild land into the real territory of the kingdom.
Sothoryos is a continent where diseases are rampant, and is filled with savage tribes and various monsters. Gillian is faced with an especially difficult task. Faced with the heavy responsibility of the kingdom, Gillian is not afraid of risks. He has personally led his troops deep into Sothoryos many times, constantly fighting or trading with the tribes of Sothoryos.
However, even though Gillian was very capable and his territory had a steady supply of supplies and immigrants from the kingdom, the development of Sothoryos was still fraught with difficulties. The local savage tribes often clashed with the kingdom's immigrants, destroying one colony after another. The plague in the Green Hell claimed countless lives.
However, despite the hardships ahead, Gillian never gave up. After paying a lot of blood, sweat and tears, Commander Sothoryos finally achieved his early goal - to establish a firm foothold in the Yi River Basin. Today, fortresses symbolizing the authority of the kingdom have been built on both sides of this warm river, and expeditions and pioneering groups are constantly exploring the interior of the continent. Although most of these activities have returned in vain or even at the cost of their lives, the commander's bounty and the wealth in the interior still attract countless desperadoes to join in.
By the time Gillian was old, immigrants from the kingdom had successfully taken root on the coasts and riverbanks of this wild continent, and the old leader's Lannister branch took root in the Basilisk Islands, remotely controlling everything in the southern continent. Unlike the dangerous Sothoryos, under the wielding of the axes and hoes of the Westeros people, the disease-ridden forests on the Basilisk Islands became smaller and smaller, and the wilderness was gradually replaced by order: this archipelago once occupied by pirates has become an important base for the kingdom to exert influence on the Far East and the South.
Today, Gillian Lannister's descendants still lead the kingdom's immigrants in the southern territories; they follow the path of their ancestors, using fire and sword, blood and sweat to open up new territories for the kingdom, and constantly explore the resources and wealth of this green continent.
2. House Baratheon
The Baratheon family, the victor of the War of the Usurper, was once the lord of the throne. In the War of Succession, because the young King Joffrey and the crown prince Tommen were killed by Targaryen supporters, the succession to the throne was passed on to Robert Baratheon's legitimate daughter Myrcella Baratheon, and eventually transferred to the Tollett family with whom she was married. For the Stag, this war made them lose the throne, but their fusion of blood made them still regarded as a member of the royal family. Baratheon was still the winner of the civil war. In the Tollett dynasty, or the Baratheon-Tollett dynasty, the branches of the Stag are still strong and respectable, and they have an important position in the kingdom that other families cannot match.
1. House Baratheon of Storm’s End
During the Tollert Dynasty, Stannis Baratheon continued to perform his duties. On the one hand, he served as Lord High Admiral in the King's Small Council, and on the other hand, he was also the Duke of Dragonstone, Governor of the Stormlands, and Commander of Tyrosh. He blocked the westward invasion of the Sea Kingdom navy, and did his best to guard the Narrow Sea, the main artery of communication between the kingdoms. Under Stannis's rule, the enemy's naval offensive was contained in the eastern part of the Summer Sea and the Shivering Sea, and the Narrow Sea experienced decades of calm. Even the notorious pirate problem of the Stepstones was solved after continuous crackdowns. Because of these achievements, Stannis was unanimously praised by the people on both sides of the Narrow Sea.
When Stannis was summoned by the Seven Gods due to old age, Hugo I divided Stannis's territory according to his will: the Stormlands were inherited by Stannis' daughter Shireen Baratheon, while the great territory of Tyrosh, which was vital to the kingdom, was designated to Gendry Baratheon, the legitimate illegitimate son of the conquering king. This young man showed his ability in the war in the east, and was therefore highly valued by Stannis and the king, and established his own family branch, the Baratheon family of Tyrosh.
2. The Moon Valley Family of Desletto
Mia Moonvale, the eldest daughter of the King of Conquerors, is a well-known illegitimate daughter, but also an ignored illegitimate daughter. Mia spent her childhood and youth in the valley in obscurity until Robert Baratheon planned to legitimize all his illegitimate children and send them to the east to serve as vassals. Only then did she gain the attention of the Iron Throne and took "Moonvale" as her surname.
As an adult, Mia was allowed to return to her hometown to recruit people and immigrants, thus avoiding Cersei's massacre of Robert's illegitimate children. During her time in the Vale, she was protected by the nobles of the Vale, led by Yohn Royce, and became a banner of the Alliance of the Just, involved in disputes and wars within the Vale - until Petyr Baelish kidnapped a large number of Vale lords under the pretext of negotiation.
At first, Mia Moondale was imprisoned in Gulltown, but the rebels led by the Redford family soon managed to rescue her. In the days that followed, she was forced to hide constantly to avoid Petyr and even the Baratheon royal family. With the help of her husband's family, she had no choice but to flee to the river to hide. It was not until the end of the War of Succession that she finally appeared and proved her identity to Hugo I.
During the Tollett Dynasty, Mia Moondale was the first Baratheon branch to be sent to the east. Her family built a fortress in the wilderness of Desletor and provided support for the kingdom's border guards. Mia herself was not good at fighting, but her husband Michel Redford was brave and made many contributions in the border wars. The marriage of this couple was generally considered to be made in heaven. They had many children, most of whom, except for the eldest son who inherited the title, joined the kingdom's border guards and made outstanding contributions like the children of other border lords in the kingdom.
3. The Baratheons of Matarys
Edric Baratheon, the noble bastard who was supposed to inherit the name Florent. In the original plan of the King of Conquerors, Edric should have stayed in Volantis and guarded the River Rhoyne for Joffrey. Unfortunately, the sudden death of the King of Conquerors and the subsequent War of Succession changed Edric's fate. During the war, he moved between the courts of Renly Baratheon and Stannis Baratheon, always on guard against the danger of being killed. It was not until the end of the war that he was able to settle down.
During the Tollet Dynasty, Edric was initially enfeoffed in the Disputed Lands to help the Kingdom manage the local unruly warlords; when the Fourth War of the Kingdom ended, he was transferred to Mataris, not only becoming an Eastern Border Count of the Kingdom, but also serving as the Governor of the East Frontier. In this border city, Edric Baratheon guarded the border of the Kingdom with due diligence. Although he was in a life-and-death crisis during the 13th Expedition of the Sea Kingdom, he still created many achievements. Many of his descendants also joined the Kingdom's army and held important positions in it.
4. The Baratheons of Vikerena
Bella Baratheon, the daughter of a prostitute, is also the luckiest illegitimate child of Robert. When other illegitimate children of Robert were almost killed by Cersei in King's Landing, she was elected as the first governor in Lys due to a series of coincidences. Although she was later driven out by the Targaryen supporters in Lys, Queen Daenerys did not punish her, but let her go back to Essos to claim her own land and use it to cause some trouble for Hugo Tollett.
However, probably in order to concentrate on dealing with Queen Daenerys, Hugo I did not refuse Bella Baratheon's request for fiefdom, and generously handed over the land of Wickrena that the Conqueror King planned to give her to Bella. Although she was born in a humble family, Bella still established her own rule in this "land of spring hills". With the help of her husband's family, the Rogael family, she won the love of the locals.
However, compared to ruling, Bella Baratheon's most famous deed is probably that she has many children like her father, the King of Conquerors. Perhaps because of her former profession, Bella is keen on socializing, and therefore gave birth to more than a dozen children, both legitimate and illegitimate. Since the Countess's inheritance is obviously not enough for them to inherit, Bella's sons have long been devoted to martial arts and prepared to win military merits in the kingdom's wars - these heirs have indeed created a lot of achievements, and many of them have been rewarded and enfeoffed by the throne of the country in various parts of the kingdom.
Perhaps, even if all other Baratheon branches died out, Bella's descendants would still prosper. This branch might not have inherited the bravery and wisdom of the Baratheons, but it certainly inherited the fertility and luck of its ancestors.
3. House Frey
When Hugo I proposed the idea of the Eastern Expedition, Walder Frey, the head of the Frey family, realized the opportunity to revitalize the family, and facts proved that he made the right choice: as a family that was once just a local lord, the Frey family controlled the great territories of Pentos and the Plains after the expedition, and with the establishment and development of the Tollett Dynasty, the Frey family also reached its peak - at the same time, it controlled the great territories of the Riverlands and Pentos, and its descendants also served as the commander of the royal army and the chief minister, and had a strong voice in the church and the court of Hugo I. With such a strong power, the Frey family has attracted the attention of the world, and the Twins and Pentos are crowded with people who want to get funding from the Two Towers.
There is no doubt that Lord Walder was extremely proud of his decision to invest in Hugo. It was this choice that allowed the Freys to trample underfoot countless families that once laughed at their humble origins. Even the Tully family, once the lords, are now just small trout swimming under the Twin Towers.
In order to show off the merits and achievements of the family, in the year 305 of the Conquest Era, the Freys built the largest tournament in the history of Westeros under the Twins. Due to the powerful power of the Twin Towers, dignitaries from both sides of the Narrow Sea came in droves. At the moment of the opening of the tournament, Lord Walder accepted the respect from all sides like a king from both sides of the Narrow Sea. During the tournament, he rarely showed his bad temper to embarrass people, but received the guests from all corners of the world with a friendly face. In this tournament, the Freys announced to both sides of the Narrow Sea whose era this was.
However, when a family declares itself to have reached the top, it is not far from its own decline. The prosperity of the Frey family relies heavily on the numerous descendants of Walder Frey, hundreds of whom are scattered on both sides of the Narrow Sea, involved in various industries, and manage connections and relationships for the family in different regions. It is precisely because of the concerted efforts of these descendants of Walder that the Frey family has been able to make great strides and leap into the dragon gate.
But under the current prosperous scene, undercurrents are also surging wildly. The sons who were personally taught by Old Frey still put family unity first, taking care of every member of the clan and making good use of every member of the clan. But as Old Walder aged, the descendants who came later could no longer receive such education and no longer had the spirit of striving for the family. Although Old Frey and his older sons have been suppressing the disputes within the Frey family, most of them are old and death is not far away from them.
Truth will come to light sooner or later. Frey's internal conflicts have long been noticed by outsiders. Now that old Frey is still alive, it is difficult for outsiders to take advantage of these conflicts. But as long as he is summoned by the Seven Gods, an opportunity to bring down the mansion will be right in front of them.
Finally, Walder Frey died, and he left with a smile. The funeral was attended by many nobles from both sides of the Narrow Sea, but it was also at the funeral that the internal conflicts of the Frey family began to become uncontrollable. If it were not for the elders who maintained order, some people might have directly torn the curtain that the family had tried so hard to maintain at the funeral of old Frey.
As the heir of Lord Walder, Stevron Frey tried his best to maintain the order of the family, but he was also old and soon followed his father. After Stevron, the eldest son Ryman who took over as the head of the Frey family was an unlearned bastard, which naturally caused dissatisfaction among many Frey branches. So when the gluttonous and alcoholic Ryman died of a glass of poisoned wine, it was not surprising that there was chaos within the Frey family - each Frey branch accused each other of being the murderer and fought for the opportunity to become the head of the family. And when Black Walder, who had rebelled against the family, reappeared after many years and managed to kill his two brothers, the Frey family's succession war could no longer be avoided: each Frey branch raised troops to fight each other, and the river and Pentos lords under the Frey rule also chose sides; for a time, the two kingdoms under the Twin Towers emblem were caught in the flames of war.
Due to the peace brought by the throne, the heartland of the kingdom had not experienced unrest for a generation, so the adverse effects of the Frey Civil War immediately spread to the entire kingdom. When the situation developed to this point, Hugo I could no longer tolerate or wait for the Frey family to solve the problem internally. He quickly dispatched the kingdom's army, first killing Black Walder who made the situation irreversible on the battlefield, and then forcing the Freys to end the war and return to the negotiation table to solve the problem, and finally let the Freys jointly recognize the king's close ally Aenys Frey as the new head of the Frey family.
However, things would not end like this. The internal conflict among nobles in Pentos had lasted for many years, but the Riverlands were different. Even if we did not consider that this was the birthplace of Hugo I and the hub of Westeros, the king could not tolerate a civil war under the capital without anyone watching. Therefore, after careful consideration, Hugo I ordered the revocation of the Frey family's position as the ruler of the Riverlands and the designation of the Riverlands as the crown land. Although the Freys pleaded with the king and begged him to revoke the order, the king had made up his mind. In the end, under the persuasion of old allies led by Aenys and Luchen, Hugo I relaxed the punishment. Although the Riverlands were still designated as the crown land, the Frey family was also appointed as the ruler of the Far North (managing northern Essos centered on Braavos) and real estate in Darry City and other places as compensation.
However, in the years that followed, although the overall strength of the Frey family did not decline much compared to before the direct rule of the Riverlands, due to the clear position of the national throne on the Frey family's succession order, a large number of Frey branches have realized that they will no longer be able to inherit the titles, positions and estates of these relatives, and they began to plan for their own future; finally, when Walder's sons passed away one after another, the huge Frey family was completely divided, and replaced by a series of Frey branch families with complex relationships. Although the head of the Frey family still exists, he is unable to mobilize the strength of the entire family.
Of course, although the Twin Towers emblem has inevitably fallen apart, the descendants of Frey have not forgotten how the family prospered. Many descendants of old Walder are eager to be the one to reunite the family and make Frey prosperous again - even if they cannot do this, at least they cannot let their branch be confined to the small fiefdoms of the new and old Seven Kingdoms and decay and corrupt in vain.
Therefore, inspired by the deeds of their ancestors, the descendants of old Walder began to follow the inertial path of their ancestors. On the one hand, they delved deeply into various industries and established their foundations. On the other hand, they continued to launch expeditions and colonization activities to establish their own rule on lands outside the kingdom, even if it meant their death in one lifetime.
Therefore, in the Tollett Dynasty, there were two sayings that succinctly summarized the Frey family of this era: one was "There are Freys in every 360 professions", and the other was "Wherever people go, there are Freys."
4. Mandalay Family
As one of the initial important investors in Hugo I's career, the Manderly family of White Harbor received a lot of support from the Tollet Dynasty. However, for this family that was exiled to the north, the most important favor from the king in their eyes was to allow them to regain influence in the south.
After clearing the river bend, in order to stabilize the local situation, Hugo I made an opening for the Mandalay family: the Mandalays could take back their family castles and territories on the Mandalay River, and if the family castles had been abandoned, the king would allow them to rebuild them. In this way, the Mandalays, who had been away from their homeland for nearly a thousand years, were able to return home and rebuild everything their ancestors had.
Of course, although the Mandalays rebuilt their territories in the south and assisted the king in controlling the situation in the river bay, they did not shift the family's focus back to the south: the mermaid emblem had been engraved on the walls of White Harbor for nine hundred years, and the family roots had long been moved to the north. For the Mandalays, the symbolic significance of their homeland in the south was greater than its practical significance - of course, it would be great to own a territory in the south again.
Today, Manderly has risen to become a big family on par with Stark and Bolton. In the future North, the situation of Stark, Manderly and Bolton coexisting will continue for a long time, perhaps for another nine hundred years.
5. The Bolton family
Since the Rebellion of the Usurper, thanks to their participation in the Crusade and their correct stance in the Wars of Succession, the Bolton family has regained its former status, and the former territory of the Red Kingdom has been basically recovered. Those areas that were once cleared and destroyed by the King of Winter have now rebuilt towns and ports. At the same time, their previous conversion to the Seven Gods has also enabled the Bolton family to gain a large number of support from the Seven Gods who intend to educate or fight against pagans. If it weren't for the Manderly family's gratitude to the Starks, which restricted the Bolton family's actions, the descendants of the Red King might have suppressed the descendants of the King of Winter long ago.
The throne had no intention of intervening in the three-family coexistence in the North. For Hugo I, this wild land had only one function for the kingdom, which was to provide support to the Night's Watch. Apart from this, the kingdom did not have many requirements for the North - as long as the roads and ports were kept open and a certain amount of taxes and goods were paid every year. Even the spread of the Seven Gods in the North was led by the princes and civilian forces.
It can be predicted that in the last world of the old faith, the seven-pointed star will eventually gain the upper hand. Unless the kingdom falls apart, the confrontation in the north will not change drastically.
6. Florent Family
During the Wars of Succession, restricted by the general trend of the Reach, the Florent family of Brightwater first stood under the Straw Crown to fight for Renly Baratheon. When Renly died in battle, the Florent family immediately turned to his relative Stannis Baratheon - this was originally a brilliant move, but with the great changes on other battlefields, Stannis' offensive on the continent ultimately failed. Next, as a defector from the Reach, the Florent family immediately faced fierce revenge from the heirs of the Greenhand: the family's army was surrounded and annihilated on the battlefield, and Brightwater was once surrounded by a large army. It seemed that the rule of Flores' descendants was about to end.
However, perhaps God was still on this family's side. With Euron Greyjoy's invasion of the Reach and the fall of Oldtown, the Tyrell army evacuated Brightwater, allowing the Florent family to catch a respite. Even though Brightwater was besieged again after Queen Daenerys's westward expedition, this time it was no longer as critical as the first siege. King Hugo I sent the Lannisport fleet south to rescue the Florent family and their subjects back to the north. Although Brightwater later fell to the Tyrells, they saved the most important people. When the Tyrells declined after the Dragonfall, the Florent family finally got their reward.
During the Tollett Dynasty, the Florent family assisted Hugo I in clearing out the Targaryen supporters in the River Bay, and during this period they received rewards from the king and their territory was greatly expanded; and when the direct governance of the River Bay began, Earl Alister Florent also served as the governor of the River Bay for a period of time because of his meritorious service to the dragon, and he had the momentum to become another Tyrell. However, Florent's dream soon disappeared, because the River Bay soon ushered in the division of the kingdom: Hugo I knew what a complete and united River Bay meant within the kingdom, and he would never let his descendants face this situation - so, with an order from the national throne, the large territory of the River Bay was divided into Highgarden, Oldtown and Bitterbridge. Although the Florent family still serves as the chief minister of the High Court, the power contained in this position has shrunk significantly as two-thirds of the jurisdiction has been taken away; of course, compared to the Florent family in the past, Florent's current power and status are still a step up, ranking among the first-line nobles of the kingdom - no matter how small the territory is, it is still a large territory.
Since the founding of the Tollet Dynasty, the Florent family has been embedded in the local system set up by the national throne. They have almost inherited the position of Chief of the High Court, and have also provided many officials, generals and knights for the kingdom. By the time of Coerlon, the Florent family had grown into a great river family that no one in the kingdom could ignore, and their glory would continue for many years.
7. The Tollett Family of the Valley
As the main branch of the Tollett family, the Tollett family of the Vale was surpassed by its side branches. However, because of the unique blood relationship between the family and the current royal family, they naturally obtained many privileges. Especially in the context of many old nobles in the Vale being injured or even extinct in the turmoil caused by Petyr Baelish, the Tollett family of the Vale has become one of the three pillars of the kingdom to stabilize the Vale.
Although the throne of the country announced a direct rule policy for the Vale, in practice, the officials and garrisons sent by the Tollet royal family only controlled many properties in the Blood Gate and the Vale of Arryn. Other areas were still under the rule of nobles who had close ties with the Tollet family. Among them, as the main branch of the Tollet family, the Tollet family of the Vale obtained many mountain territories that lost their lords after the turmoil in the Vale. However, compared to these territories, the Tollet family of the Vale has an official position in the kingdom that is more important than the territory, that is, the High Mountain Governor in charge of the mountains in the Vale. As the name suggests, the kingdom established this position to manage the Bright Moon Mountains, the edge of the kingdom's hinterland. Not only do they have to appease those unruly high mountain clans, but they also have to try to seize various resources in the Bright Moon Mountains for the kingdom.
As the captain of Hugo I's guard, although Addison Tollett was not the eldest son of Baron Uther Tollett, he was still the first governor of the mountains as expected. Addison achieved remarkable results in his tenure. During his tenure, the relationship between the kingdom and the mountain clans was no longer as bad as in the previous era. With the continuous trade between the lowlands and the mountains, the attitude of the mountain clans towards the "lowlanders" was not friendly, but the looting and killing in the past was unlikely to happen.
After completing this great task of appeasing the enemies, Addison was able to go to the King's Landing court and handed over the position of Governor of the Mountains to his brother. In the following time, the Valley Tollets headed by Addison Tollets often had a seat in the royal council and assisted the kingdom of his relatives.
8. The Hatton Family of the Valley
Due to the dwindling number of members of the Arryn family, although his Arryn bloodline comes from his mother's side, Harold Hatton is still the legal heir of Lord Robert Arryn. If Lord Robert encounters an accident, Harold will inherit the position of Lord of the Eyrie and the Guardian of the Vale. For this reason, when the young Duke was taken away from the Vale by Petyr Baelish, Hugo I appointed Harold Hatton as the Guardian of the Vale, thereby stabilizing the inheritance dispute of the Vale.
In the early years of the Tollett dynasty, Harold Haton participated in military operations including the Dorne Expedition, but due to the continued existence of Lord Robert Arryn, he was unable to take a further step to become the true Warden of the East and the Duke of the Eyrie. In the end, when the main branch of Arryn died without an heir due to the early death of Lord Robert, Harold finally obtained the titles he should have obtained many years ago and officially took over everything of the Arryn family.
9. The Graveson Family of the Valley
As one of Hugo I's earliest investors in the Great Crusade, the Graveson family established a deep connection and business alliance with the Tollett family in the following decade. For this reason, when the Gravesons were stripped of their titles and territories by Petyr Baelish, Hugo I quickly accepted the exiles among them and tried to rescue the hostages controlled by Petyr. After Petyr abandoned the valley, the Graveson family was also the first family to be restored with the help of Hugo.
During the Tollet Dynasty, the Grafson family still managed Seagull Town. As the key point of the valley's external sea route, the throne of the country attached great importance to this port. With the support of the royal family, the Grafson family recovered early. Not only did they continue to trade in the narrow sea, they also cooperated with their relatives in the east to establish a set of trade routes to the sea country and even the Far East - of course, this was achieved after the final peace talks between the two countries.
10. The Baik Family of the Valley
During the Targaryen dynasty, the Bayke family was just an unknown knight family in the Vale. Its head, William Bayke, once participated in the Battle of the Ninepenny Kings and fought side by side with Orc Tollett, the father of Hugo I. They eventually formed a deep friendship. For this reason, after Orc's death, Sir William assisted Hugo in dealing with his father's funeral and promoted Hugo from a squire to a knight.
Perhaps at the time, Sir William only thought that this was the best he could do to help his old comrade, but when the War of the Usurper ended and the Great Crusade began, he would be surprised to find that the taciturn young man in front of his father's grave had become a man favored by the common people, and in the miraculous Eastern Expedition, he recovered the Andas and became a powerful duke. Hugo Tollet was a man who knew how to repay his kindness. With the help of the Duke of Andas, the Byker family gradually became a well-known valley family from an ordinary knight family.
During the Tollett Dynasty, as a family that had done a favor to the king, the Bykers rose from a knight family to a noble family, and gained a lot of power and privileges in the Vale. As Earl William was old, Hugo I appointed his son to manage the kingdom's garrison in the Vale, and later conferred him the title of Knight of the Bloody Gate; and when the king returned the governance of the Vale to Duke Harold Hatton, the Warden of the East, the Bykers, in addition to governing their own fiefdoms, were also responsible for managing the Bloody Gate and the remaining properties of the royal family in the Vale of Arryn. Therefore, although the Bykers were not among the "three pillars", they still had a high status in the Vale.
11. The Holt Family of Riverbend
Before the War of Succession, the Holt family of the River Bend was just an inconspicuous northern branch of the descendants of King Greenhand, ruling only a few towers, mills and a village, quietly continuing their lineage in the northern part of the River Bend. On the eve of the War of the Usurper, the then Lord Holt hired Hugo Tollett from the Valley to serve the family. When the war broke out, this noble and honorable lord took the initiative to dissolve his relationship with Hugo Tollett and gave him an additional reward; when Hugo Tollett decided to fight to protect the civilians in the river, this bounty was the initial fund for him to purchase supplies and organize the rebel army.
When Lord Holt sent away the knight who served him, he would never have expected that this would be the beginning of a change in the fate of his family. When Hugo's expedition plan was approved by King Robert, he soon wrote to Lord Holt and invited him to participate in the expedition, but the latter was focused on recovering his territory due to the aftermath of the war, so he failed to go; however, even so, after Hugo Tollet successfully established himself in the Andas in the east, he still generously repaid the small family that had helped him, not only sending a large amount of wealth and oriental specialties, but also specially gifted them a Valyrian steel sword seized from the Holy Army of Qohor. With this wealth and reputation, the Holt family not only got rid of the sequelae of the War of the Usurper, but also took the opportunity to purchase some new properties. When King Robert decided to go on an expedition himself, the family organized and hired an army of hundreds of people to follow the king eastward and received some rewards in the east. With this, this border family entered its own prosperous period.
In the War of Succession, out of gratitude to the Baratheon royal family, the Holt family stood on the side of the royal family. Even when Cersei Lannister was blinded by greed after Robert's death, this family cooperated with the Lannister and Stark families to gather an army to fight against the aggressive Renly Baratheon in the south after the chaos subsided, and still remained loyal to the royal family after the Lion and Wolf Alliance broke down again.
The change in the attitude of the Holt family towards the royal family occurred during the Long Night. In order to resist the invasion of the White Walkers, the Holt family, like many Westeros families, actively participated in the preparations for the war with the White Walkers. During this period, Lord Holt's eldest son also participated in the Battle of Glory and died heroically. At this time, the royal family was focused on taking the opportunity to invade the land of the "enemy" in the south. After witnessing all this, the Holt family no longer supported the royal family, but turned to support Hugo Tollett together with many Westeros nobles.
During the Toret Dynasty, as a family that had done favors for the king and was also the first family in the Reach to respond to Hugo I, the Holt family rose from a small local lord to a great noble in the northern part of the Reach, and also gained a lot of power and privileges. When the Reach was divided into three parts by the throne of the country, Lord Holt served as the governor of the Bitterbridge Territory, and his family truly became one of the first-line nobles in the kingdom. After the direct control policy of the Reach was adjusted, the Holt family became the hereditary lord of this great territory, and was authorized to assist in the management of a large number of royal properties in the Reach.
12. The Horald Family of the King's Territory
During the reign of King Aerys II of the Targaryen Dynasty, due to a series of power disputes involving Duskendale, the Darklyns eventually imprisoned King Aerys II who came to negotiate, and tortured him inhumanely; therefore, when the rebellion ended with the surrender of the Darklyns, King Targaryen's punishment of the rebels was extremely cruel. Not only was the Darklyns spared, but the families loyal to it or married to it were also affected. The first to bear the brunt of this was the Horald family - this Not only was the family married into the Darklyns, but family members also served as Darklyns' stewards and coaches, and during the Darklyns' Rebellion, they killed the king's Kingsguard - so, with the exception of the young Dontos Hollard, whose life was saved due to Ser Barristan Selmy's pleading, the other members of the Hollard family followed their master's family; even Dontos, who survived, could only live cautiously under Barristan's protection, and when he came of age, he immediately left King's Landing.
With the outbreak of the War of the Usurper, Dontos Hollard immediately joined Robert's rebel army due to his deep hatred for the Targaryens, but he did not achieve any brilliant achievements in the war. He just got the nickname "Red Knight" for unknown reasons. Therefore, although Dontos was one of the first knights to respond to Robert, he did not receive any considerable rewards, but just got a job in the Red Castle of the new dynasty.
The turning point for Dontos and the Hollard family came from the Rebellion in King's Landing. After the current lords of Duskendale, the Ryker family, were all exiled to the Wall for participating in the rebellion, Dontos of the Hollard family, as a victim of the Targaryen dynasty and a family that had been married to the Darklyns for generations, became the newly appointed Earl of Duskendale by King Robert. The young Earl then participated in the Second Expedition as King Robert's supervisor, and followed the king's footsteps in the Third Expedition.
Although the Hollard family did not gain any land from the East during the expedition, Dontos still received many rewards from the royal family for his contributions. In the following time, Dontos Hollard lived a luxurious and superior life in King's Landing, and transformed himself from a "Red Knight" to a "Fat Earl" and "Banquet King", becoming a notorious hedonist on both sides of the Narrow Sea; on the other hand, Dontos also used these banquets he hosted to contact people from all parties and help the Iron Throne distribute some interests and affairs, which was undoubtedly a responsibility that only the royal confidants could undertake.
Therefore, on the eve of the death of the King of Conquerors, Dontos and Eddard Stark were the only two important ministers summoned by the king. During the War of Succession, the Earl of Duskendale also did his best to maintain the throne of the Baratheon family. He was close to Stannis Baratheon, and first cooperated with Tywin Lannister and Kevan Lannister to stabilize the order of the crown and fight against Renly Baratheon and the Tyrell family. After the two backbones of the Lannister died one after another, Dontos kept trying to drive Cersei Lannister and even the Lannister family away from the political center of the kingdom, and finally achieved the former point after the Long Night.
During the Tollett Dynasty, as the war subsided, the Tollett, Baratheon, Lannister and other families finally reached an agreement, and Earl Dontos believed that he had completed the mission entrusted by the previous king; after that, although he still lived a luxurious life in King's Landing and Duskendale, he no longer interfered in the kingdom's political affairs.
In the middle of Hugo I's reign, Count Dontos's health gradually deteriorated due to the side effects of a long-term extravagant life. He once performed disgraceful activities for the king in exchange for wealth. It was precisely because of this overly extravagant life that he eventually got a not-so-gentle ending. After being tortured by illness for a period of time, Count Dontos Hollard quickly lost weight due to complications from a series of diseases and died suddenly in Duskendale one summer day. Among his peers, his death was considered very early.
In short, the death of Dontos Hollard not only provides an excellent example for the church to oppose extravagant life, but also rings the alarm bell for many nobles who live luxuriously. After Dontos' death, his eldest son inherited his father's title and completely abandoned his father's lifestyle. Thanks to his healthy lifestyle, the Earl of Duskendale is still in office and in good health at the time of writing, and has even accompanied the kingdom's army to fight in the east.
13. The Mopatis Family of Pentos
As descendants of the Blackfyre family, the Mopatis family climbed to a position that was unimaginable for previous Blackfyre dynasties during the Baratheon and Tollet dynasties. This was undoubtedly a great irony - in fact, the entire kingdom did not expect this.
Perhaps, during the War of Succession, Hugo I had already noticed something, but he chose to help the Mopatis family conceal it all. It was not until the time of Corlon that the Blackfy bloodline of the Mopatis family and the relationship between this family and the former intelligence minister Varys, who died peacefully, became known. By then, the Mopatis family had been completely integrated into the kingdom's system.
As the only heir to the emerging House of Mopatis, Rocus Mopatis defeated the rebellion in Pentos during the Wars of Succession, and as a result became a squire of Hugo I, and was later knighted by the king himself. With his close relationship with the king, Rocus not only participated in military campaigns such as the War of Glory, Dragonfall, Reckoning at the Reach and Dorne Expedition, but also held important positions in the national throne at an early stage, eventually serving as Hand of the King and Speaker of the Kingdom's Grand Council, and had the right to display both the Blackfire Emblem and the Mopatis Emblem at the same time during the Corrond Age.
Similarly, because of Hugo I's emphasis on cultivating Rocus and the Toret royal family's preferential treatment of the Mopatis family, there was a rumor that in Hugo I's conception of the Fourth Expedition, he had no intention of annexing those lands that were too far to the east and almost reached the limit of the kingdom's administrative scope. On the contrary, it was safer to support a king loyal to the Toret royal family in the local area - and this candidate was Rocus Mopatis, or Aegon Blackfyre. Of course, with the termination of the kingdom's Fourth Expedition in Mataris and the death of related figures, we have no way of knowing the truth of this statement.
During the Corron period, as many wise ministers and generals had aged, Rocus Mopatis, as the representative of the new generation of the kingdom, took on the heavy responsibility of assisting the new king. During the 13th expedition of the Sea Kingdom, when Corron I went to Essos to supervise the war, it was Rocus who led the Royal Council to assist Queen Myrcella who stayed in King's Landing; and in the reconciliation process between the two kingdoms in the twilight years of King Corron, the descendants of Blackfyre also mediated. Therefore, in the following period, the Tollet family and the Mopatis family also entered into a marriage to consolidate the relationship.
It can be predicted that in the coming era, the Mopatis family will still play an important role in the political arena of the kingdom - the Blackfire family ultimately failed to seize the throne, but their descendants still obtained the power and status that their ancestors had longed for.
14. The Teeter Family in Peaceful Land
There is no doubt that as the former minions of the Pentos slave owners, the early history of the Tet family was not glorious in the eyes of the kingdom and the Andals. In order to integrate the family into the Pentos system, Gleichel Tet did everything he could, not only working hard to squeeze the compatriots in the valley, but also expanding the conflict with the hill Andals. However, although Gleichel worked so hard, the nobles of Pentos still regarded him as a tool that could be abandoned at any time, and calculated him in the actions he personally planned, forcing the Tet family to spit out all that they had accumulated over the years. With no other choice, Gleichel returned to his territory to assemble the army, but was captured by the surprise attack of the Swan Hill army. Finally, after all the twists and turns, he pledged allegiance to Hugo Toret, and told the expeditionary army about the scam of the valley, which made contributions to the expeditionary army's successful capture of Andals.
During the period when the expeditionary army and the Baratheon dynasty ruled Andas, Grachel Tite gained great importance in the Kingdom of Andas by relying on her loyalty, merits, and most importantly, her various means of controlling the grassroots. As a long whip that was always wielding, the Grachel family did many things on behalf of the expeditionary army that were not conducive to dealing with the local people, used thundering means to collect supplies, stabilize the people's hearts, and assisted the expeditionary army in resisting the offensive of the northern cities.
During the Wars of Succession and the Long Night, the whip was not only swung again, but also expanded its range to cover the entire Seven Eastern Kingdoms. In order to raise supplies for the rebels, Grachel squeezed the manpower and material resources of the Seven Eastern Kingdoms to the limit. She made great contributions to Hugo I's leadership in defeating the White Walkers, and inevitably bore many infamy.
During the Toret dynasty, the Gleichel family was still valued by the Toret royal family for their ability and loyalty, but they no longer had to bear the king's infamy. Unlike Gleichel, his son Gleichel the Younger was a pious and noble knight, and joined the most prestigious Seven Star Knights in the East, accumulating many honors and reputations. When Gleichel the Younger left the Knights, Hugo I arranged for him to take over the position of Captain of the Guard of Addison Toret. In the middle and late period of Hugo's reign, Gleichel the Younger was appointed General of the Kingdom's Guards. With this, the Tit family finally completed its transformation.
15. The Valanciennes of Swan Hill
On the road of the "Great Man" Chorron to unify all of Andal, a mountain lord of Swan Hill surrendered to the king and offered Chorron the mountains surrounding the Little Rhoyne River. However, when the king of All Andal decided to pursue the victory and completely expel the Norvos people, the lord who had heard of the power of the dragon was shaken. On a stormy night, the lord led his mountain people to leave the army, returned to Swan Hill to proclaim himself king, and watched coldly as the dragon king destroyed the "Great Man's" kingdom.
This king ruled the mountains for many years. When he was old, he divided his territory between his two sons, one named Haji and the other named Valanli. On his deathbed, the old king told his sons to live in harmony and govern the kingdom together. However, perhaps it was the curse of betraying the previous king, or perhaps it was human greed. Soon after the old king's death, his sons began to fight for his inheritance. Even after the brothers died in battle one after another, the war in the mountains did not stop.
From then on, the world entered history, and history evolved into legend. Over a long period of time, the names of the two princes evolved into two surnames, and the reason for the killing was forgotten. For hundreds and thousands of years, the Haji clan and the Valanli clan killed each other in the valley generation after generation. Even if one side killed the other, the defeated side would always have a branch emerging from somewhere in the mountains, taking over the flag and emblem of the main branch and continuing to fight the enemy in front of them. No matter how the mountains changed, the endless feud continued in this mountainous area. Even if one side was stronger than the other at some point, it was just an unsustainable strongman rule. It was not until another kingdom extended its influence deep into this inland area that the situation became different.
Before the Great Crusade began, wars within the Andals, especially in the Swan Hill area, began to become increasingly fierce. At some point in the early and middle period of Aerys II's reign over Westeros, the conflict between Og of the Hager clan and Baerlich, the "Lord of the Wood Tower" of the Valanli clan, intensified. After a long and bloody war, Baerlich killed Og, declared himself the Lord of the Highlands and the Lord of the Swan Hill, and established his own rule among the mountains - which usually only lasted for one generation.
However, with the arrival of the expeditionary force of Westeros, the fate of Swan Hill also changed: after careful consideration, Behrish stood on the side of the expeditionary force like the other two lords of the hills, and because of this choice, Behrish and even the rule of the Valanli clan in Swan Hill was recognized by the expeditionary force and the kingdom, and was finally thoroughly established during the tour of the Conqueror King.
For Behrich, after several critical moments during the expedition era, the most gratifying reward he received was the opportunity to completely destroy the Haji clan's possible revival: because Behrich led the Valanli clan to stand on the side of the expeditionary army, the remaining Haji clan naturally joined the northern cities' siege of the Andas Principality. When the siege was thwarted and the Andas Principality was integrated into the rule of the Iron Throne, the Hajis naturally became "rebels". Taking this opportunity, after the end of the kingdom's expedition, Behrich ruled in the name of the kingdom inside Swan Hill, spending nearly ten years to eradicate the remaining Hajis. The survivors also fled from Swan Hill and completely left the mountains. Thanks to the internal pacification, Behrich was able to turn his attention to the mountains. In order to obtain the fertile plains under the mountains, Behrich became more obedient to Duke Hugo in the following time, and finally obtained part of the Darry family's territory because of his military exploits in the War of Succession and achieved his goal.
During the Toret Dynasty, the rule of the Valanli clan in Swan Hill was completely stable. At the same time, due to his age and poor health, this hill lord who was already famous before the expedition chose to hand over all specific government affairs to his son, and spent his later years in peace in the territory outside the mountain. Shortly after the end of the Kingdom's Fourth Expedition, Berich Valanli passed away peacefully in his sleep, and his son inherited the title of Lord of Swan Hill. This may be the most peaceful power inheritance in Swan Hill in hundreds of years.
Perhaps one day, the descendants of Berich will also be divided into several clans and fight against each other, but as long as the rule of the national throne still exists in Andas and Swan Hill, this will not happen.
16. The Gurtlo Family of the Triangle
When the Valyrian Freehold ruled all parts of the eastern continent, they not only established colonies and colonial cities everywhere, but also built military camps in various important places and sent garrisons to control these areas. These large military garrisons often clamped the fragmented societies of various remote areas of the empire together like iron clamps, forming a regional society that was closer to their southern homeland. This transformation did not come to an abrupt end until the destruction of the Freehold: Valyrian culture relied on Valyria's resources, wealth and lifestyle. When the empire's brain was destroyed and its body collapsed in chaos, its borders naturally could not continue to support themselves, so the local people's lifestyle and culture began to dominate again, gradually screening and integrating these southern outsiders - the Triangle of Andas is such an area.
As the most northwestern remote territory of the Freehold, the Triangle of Andals was originally just an inconspicuous area in the dragon kings' territory. It was not until Braavos announced its existence to the world that its value was noticed by the dragon kings. So a garrison was sent here to build fortresses and cities in this valley surrounded by countless Andal tribes, and to be vigilant about the possible activities of the illegitimate daughter of Valyria.
When the Freehold collapsed, the land had been deeply influenced by Valyrian culture. Although some people fled to the south and some died in the conflict, more people stayed and began to engage in more comfortable careers. The Dragon King's garrison gradually disintegrated over the long years, officers became small lords, soldiers and military families formed villages, customs and outposts on the border became fortresses of the nobles, and the city that was once the garrison of the legion became the capital of the ruler. Apart from the practice of electing leaders and the technology of breeding horses, the descendants of these Valyrian soldiers were no different from the "barbarians" everywhere. After that, they didn't need to defend anything, they just needed to take care of themselves.
After the collapse of the Freehold, the Andals were not at peace. The Andal lords often fought for land and population, and the Valyrian women also waited for opportunities to exert their influence on this vast river valley. However, all this had nothing to do with the Triangle. Thanks to the relatively closed geographical environment and the inheritance of the army, the residents of the Triangle repelled foreign invasions several times. Even the army of Pentos could not completely conquer them, and could only make them surrender in name.
During the Great Crusade, the Grand Lord of the Triangle was Saier of the Gultlo family. He actively responded to the great uprising launched by the Saint in the valley, and personally led his army to join the rebels. Saier was one of the few people in the upper echelons of the rebels who was truly loyal to the Saint, and he cooperated with the expeditionary force from afar to thwart the conspiracy of the Pentos people. During the subsequent siege, Saier also fought side by side with the expeditionary force to resist the siege from all sides of the city-state army.
In the following years, the Triangle healed the scars of the war and restored its original peace. Lord Sayre focused on defending against possible Northern Confederation offensives along the Edge Mountains. During the War of Succession, he followed Duke Hugo to control the Braavos River Valley and manage the many Andal tribes in this wild land. During the Long Night, he led the Triangle army to participate in the War of Glory. In the early Tollet Dynasty, Sayre continued to manage the Braavos River Valley until the Far North took over this part of the power. After that, he continued to govern the Triangle for the king and provide the kingdom with high-quality war horses and soldiers.
Lord Sayre died in the middle of Hugo I's reign. He was a diligent and people-loving hill lord who was committed to reconciling the relations between the various villages and lords within the Triangle. When the Iron Throne's power entered Andas, he also actively introduced external materials and technology, greatly improving the situation in the region. As a result, he was mourned by the residents of the Triangle, and had a high-standard mausoleum in the local area. Some people even asked the church to canonize him.
However, despite the high reputation of Sayre in the Triangle, people did not choose Sayre's son to succeed the throne when selecting the new great lord. On the one hand, this was because most of Sayre's descendants died young, and the eldest son was not yet 30 years old. On the other hand, the residents and lords of the Triangle were still willing to continue the tradition of selecting wise men and were unwilling to let one family sit in the city of Noor and rule the land. Therefore, the Gultero family left the city of Noor and returned to their own territory.
In the time of Corron, the Andas Triangle was still famous in the East for its horses and disciplined troops, and the Toret royal family formed several infantry and light cavalry teams here and incorporated them into the Praetorian Guard.
After leaving the city of Nore, the Gultero family continued to expand their influence in the Triangle, and on the other hand, turned their attention back to the outside of the hills. They were no longer satisfied with being confined to a corner of the Triangle; therefore, several members of the Gultero family, including the son of Searle, joined the king's guards as officers and achieved some military exploits in the long border conflicts in the east.
17. The Talamante Family of Gray Valley
In the local historical materials and legends of Andas that have been handed down, the origins of the Talamante family of Greyenvale are not very clear. There are all kinds of theories, from ancient lords to immigrants from Lorras. Only one thing is certain: as a family of great lords who control the key passes and trade routes between the two mountains, the Talamante family not only communicates with Andas and Lorras, but is also influenced by Andas and Lorras. Not only do they have relatives and relationship networks on both sides of the mountains, the heirs of the family are also sent to Lorras for education, and these people often dye their hair red and white in the Lorras style.
During the Great Crusade, Lord Carral Talamant of Greyenvale was the last Hill Lord to respond to the expedition. Perhaps knowing the Pentos' plan in advance, he chose to remain neutral during the Great Rebellion in the Valley, and only chose to lead his troops down the mountain to meet Hugo until the expedition defeated the Pentos' minions.
Afterwards, the army of House Talamante accompanied the expeditionary force in the Battle of Overlook and the Battle of Sheephorn. When the northern cities turned their spearheads towards the expeditionary force's Andas, Kelar followed Duke Hugo's orders to guard the pass of Greyenvale until the Norvos people broke into Andas from the Triangle, and he was forced to end the defense of the pass. Although the territory and castle of House Talamante fell to Norvos during this period, the Dorne expeditionary force later took them back from the northern cities.
During the Baratheon dynasty and the War of Succession, Lord Kelar was not active among the Andalese families. Most of the time, he and his family loyally guarded the important pass of Greyenvale and resisted attacks from the Northern Confederacy for the kingdom.
During the Toret Dynasty, the Kelar and Talamante families still fulfilled their responsibilities of guarding the pass. At the same time, due to their good relationship with Lorras for generations, the family also served as the "Valley Supervisor" of the kingdom, responsible for communicating with the northern city-state on behalf of the kingdom. In addition, with the end of the long conflict in the mountains of northern Essos, the trade route through the Grey Valley Rush has also prospered again, and the Talamante family has also gained a lot of wealth.
With the help of official positions in the kingdom and the trade routes it controlled, the Talamante family became richer and more powerful than ever before in this era. The family's influence also expanded to several large cities on both sides of the Narrow Sea. The Talamante family's already stable lineage inheritance also continued in this peaceful era.
