Chapter 286: Extra: Nether's Scroll
A mostly destroyed artifact from the Forgotten Realms Canon, one of the official Dungeons & Dragons canon collections.
NetherScrolls: 100 golden scrolls found by the Netherese in the ruins of Erewandare. Two sets of NetherScrolls exist, each containing fifty scrolls. A complete set is located deep within the Windsong Tower in the ruins of Myth Drannor, in the form of golden beech wood, named Ques-ya-Teransvar (Golden Grove of Hidden Knowledge).
PS: This set is also confirmed to be destroyed in 3R's official mod. Another set has been broken up and most are lost. At least until the Year of Moonfall, three scrolls were located in the Hall of Mists beneath the Grandfather Tree in the High Forest. Another two were located in the Hessak Vault, which lies beneath the sands of the western part of the Savage Bison Desert. A few of the remaining scrolls have been destroyed, and the location and current status of those that remain are unknown.
Each scroll is an 8" by 10" page of thin gold foil, as flexible as paper. Silver magic writing moves slowly across its surface, as if alive. The scroll's small size belies the vast amount of information contained within. Once a "page" is read, the writing swirls and shifts across the page, reorganizing into the next page. Overall, it takes about a month of focused study to read a single Nether scroll.
The Netheric scrolls form the basis of modern Faerûn's magical theory. Although not directly, virtually all wizards who have specialized in any area of the mystical arts since the rise of Netheril have learned their knowledge from the Netheric scrolls. Of course, much of the information contained in these scrolls is already considered common knowledge by the magical community of Faerûn. Nevertheless, the Netheric scrolls still contain a wealth of information that is helpful to all students of the mystical arts.
Simply reading a Nether scroll grants a profound understanding of the mystical arts. Any character who reads one immediately gains one level in his or her chosen mystical spellcasting class (that is, his or her total experience points are at the midpoint of his or her new level).
The Nether scrolls are divided into five chapters, each covering a different aspect of the secret arts. A character who manages to read the ten scrolls in a chapter gains additional benefits, the nature of which depends on the subject being read.
and the benefits provided are described below.
Arcane Principles (Basic Principles of Magic): +30 talent bonus on observation spell checks; +1 to the saving throw DC for all arcane spells.
Magical Creation (Spells of Creation): Three additional item creation feats; the XP cost to create any magic item is reduced to 75% of the original amount.
Greater Creation: Gain Craft Construct (see page 303 of the Monster Guide) as a bonus feat; any golem or other construct created has maximum hit points.
Realm Mechanics (Realm Research): Can use plane shift as the spell of the same name, once per day; ignore any harmful or debilitating environmental effects of the realm.
Arcane Discourse (Artifact Creation): Unknown. It is generally believed that this section of the Nether scrolls teaches how to create artifacts. However, some additional key is required to unlock this set of scrolls, and the spellcasters of Windsong Spire have never found it.
The benefits gained from studying a particular chapter apply only to the character's arcane spellcasting class. For example, if a 15th-level cleric/5th-level wizard studies a scroll of greater creation and attempts to create a golem with divine spells, the golem will not have maximum hit points.
Dazzling Aura, school of transmutation; CL 40th; Weight 1 lb. (per scroll). (End of chapter)
