Chapter 1066 Choice
She had to come here, for herself and for her mother.
Upon hearing this news, Dean's eyes showed even greater pain; there were some things he had to do.
Wu Heng remained seated in the corner, his expression indifferent and cold.
Su An stood beside the pastor, seemingly calm, but her sharp eyes swept across the entire room, especially in the direction of Dean and Sam. She noticed that their gazes were not quite right, and she also felt a sense of unease and oppression.
The ceremony begins.
Reverend Le Granger pointed to Leila, who walked to the center of the stage amidst applause and blessings from the crowd, making her appear even smaller and more helpless.
The priest opened his arms, ready to begin the familiar procedure. Su An also turned around, covering the dome-shaped cross pendant on his chest with both hands, preparing to communicate with Death and lock onto the distant sacrifice, Karl Reid.
Just as the priest's hand touched Leila's forehead, the treatment began.
"Fire! Run! The tent is on fire!" Dean's rough shout, like a thunderclap, suddenly rang out from the back of the venue.
He lit the smoke device he had prepared beforehand, and the acrid smoke quickly spread around the edge of the crowd!
Panic instantly replaced piety.
The crowd hurriedly stood up and rushed towards the exit like ants in a pot that had been set on fire. The pastor, Le Granger, on the platform was taken aback by the sudden chaos and his outstretched hand froze in mid-air.
"Don't panic, everyone. Keep order and leave in an orderly manner."
His shouts were drowned out by hurried footsteps, and Su An quickly led him away.
Dean rushed forward at that moment.
“Mrs. Su An, you can’t leave yet.” He blocked their way.
"You did this?" Su An's eyes widened, and she instantly realized what was going on. She didn't understand. "We just healed you, and this is your reward?"
Her eyes were practically spitting fire.
"Get away! Stay away from me."
But at this moment she was more worried about her husband's safety, so she had to forcibly break off her connection with death. She grabbed her bewildered husband and, under the cover of a devout believer, hurriedly retreated backstage.
With two large followers guarding him, Dean felt he was at a disadvantage and did not take any forceful action. He needed to find the core that controlled the dark magic.
Mrs. Luke desperately protected her daughter amidst the chaos, but the expression on her face had plummeted from the heaven of ecstasy to the hell of despair.
Her eyes were vacant, staring intently at the direction of the tent shrouded in smoke, as if her soul had been ripped out.
Again!
Another opportunity that was within reach slipped away right before our eyes.
Leila leaned against her mother's chest, her body trembling slightly. Her face showed no fear, only a blank and helpless expression. She didn't even look at Dean, who had caused the chaos.
"Enough, Su An, stop all of this!" Dean growled, his eyes sharp as knives. "You have no right to decide whose life should be taken!"
Su An stopped and turned to face Dean. His face showed no panic, only the coldness of someone thoroughly enraged, and a look as if he were looking at an ungrateful person: "Stop?"
She first told the believer to leave with her husband, and then questioned him:
"Then I watched innocent children like Leila die, watched more people like you despair. What did I do wrong? I cleaned up the trash, I saved lives worth saving!" "You, who only stands here because of the lives I stole, what right do you have to judge me?!"
Dean's chest heaved, clearly hurt, but he persisted: "Nobody has that right. This isn't justice, this is murder. You'll kill that Carl Reid!"
“Karl Reid?” Su An’s eyes sharpened instantly. “You’ve been to my basement?”
“Carl Reid was a man who deserved what he got.”
“He is guilty, but you shouldn’t be the one to judge him.” Dean’s voice was firm, but his eyes held a deep contradiction; he himself felt a sense of ingratitude.
But it must be done.
Just then, a calm, completely undisturbed voice broke in:
"I don't think so."
"But it seems there are other friends as well."
Wu Heng emerged from the shadows of the tent, his gaze falling on Leila, who had suddenly appeared, being tightly supported by her mother, her eyes vacant. In the chaos, Mrs. Luke had instinctively sought refuge with the pastor, but had mistakenly wandered into this place.
Wu Heng pointed at Leila, but his gaze was fixed on Dean: "Are you really going to do this, Dean? Are you going to insist on stopping it?"
Dean instinctively glanced at Leila, but didn't dare look directly at the expressions of the mother and daughter. He could only forcefully turn his head to meet Wu Heng's gaze and say again:
"It is unfair to exchange someone else's life for your own. It is against both law and morality, no matter who that person is!"
"Is that so?" Wu Heng's lips curled into a slight smile, as if he already knew the answer.
Then he slowly pulled a thin brown paper document bag from his inside suit pocket and handed it to Dean: "Law and morality, huh? Well, take a look at this."
Su An, who had initially thought Dean had found help and was about to leave when she saw Wu Heng appear, suddenly realized that this gentleman did not seem to agree with Dean's opinion, so she quieted down, but still looked at Dean angrily.
Dean took it with a puzzled look and quickly pulled out the documents inside.
It was a hospital diagnosis report and a clipping. The diagnosis report clearly stated: Carl Reid, advanced pancreatic cancer, metastasis throughout the body, estimated survival: <24 hours.
The clipping was an old news article from several years ago, reporting a vicious robbery. The victim was a pregnant convenience store clerk, and the perpetrator was Carl Reid. The man in the photo had a ferocious expression.
"I have reservations about your view that you cannot exchange someone else's life for your own, but given the current situation..."
“As you can see,” Wu Heng said calmly, “is a person whose life countdown is less than ten hours and who is burdened with serious sins.” He turned his gaze to Leila, who seemed frightened by the somber atmosphere and instinctively shrank into her mother’s arms. “The other is a girl who is close to you and can only live for about half a month.”
Wu Heng's gaze locked onto Dean again, each word striking his heart like a hammer blow:
"To exchange his inevitable ten hours of agonizing suffering for this girl's healthy life for the next few decades—is this exchange still unfair in your eyes, still morally intolerable?"
"Or are you saying that, just because of that one unyielding principle in your heart, you're going to stand by and watch these two people, one rotting away in agony on their hospital bed, the other waiting in despair for their brain tumor to devour them, both heading towards death in the next two weeks?"
"You keep saying you want to stop private judges like Su An, that she's violated the law and overstepped her authority, so what are you doing now?" (End of Chapter)
