Chapter 1267 The Compensator
Wu Heng's figure arrived at the top of a hill of bones.
He looked down at the locator on his wrist, which had completely stopped working, and then looked up at this desolate place that even high-level demons were unwilling to linger in.
“The place closest to the abyss,” he murmured. “A good choice.”
Almost as soon as he regained his footing, the temporary rift that had pulled him into this place flashed in the distance, then quickly closed and disappeared.
Further away, several powerful auras subtly fluctuated, belonging to the great demons guarding the vicinity to ensure the trap was closed.
In another direction, a pure yet icy aura of holy light appeared for a fleeting moment like a lighthouse before disappearing.
The watchers of Heaven and Hell exchanged a glance across the blood-soaked plain, confirming the success of the first phase of the plan.
In their view, the prey had fallen into the deepest cage.
Wu Heng did not try to find a way out, nor did he touch the demonic tides that lingered in the distance but dared not approach because of the dangerous aura emanating from him.
He walked to a sheltered spot on the hill, squatted down, and the grayish-white balance energy on his right glove gathered at his fingertips.
Instead of attacking, he began to locate and summon arrays.
The inscription was completed quickly. Wu Heng placed his left hand on the edge of the array, closed his eyes, and let his consciousness sink into the depths, passing through the balance barrier of the glove, and touching that carefully concealed abyssal imprint originating from his own essence.
Buzz--!
The space at the center of the array began to distort, rippling like a stone thrown into water, and a very thin, dark crack quietly opened up in the center.
Through the crack, a deeper, more ancient, and extremely terrifying aura suddenly emerged, frantically squeezing out along the fissure, as if trying to break through to hell.
The mere wisp of aura that was leaked caused the surging tide of demons in the distance to retreat in terror as if they had encountered their natural enemy, and even the great demons and high-ranking angels who were hiding and monitoring felt an instinctive tremor.
And it seems that something in the depths of the abyss on the other side of the rift has noticed the crack and is looking at it, trying to get closer and widen the passage.
Wu Heng remained expressionless and swiftly retrieved an item from his personal space with his right hand.
It was a complex mechanical structure, about the size of a basketball, made of dark metal and flowing light paths, with a constantly pulsating dark red crystal embedded in its center.
The prototype of the 'Compensator'.
Without hesitation, the prototype was precisely launched into the tiny crack.
"Go, that's where you should be working."
On the other side of the crack, the enormous, cold entity seemed to hesitate for a moment at this sudden 'gift,' and in that instant, Wu Heng clenched his left hand.
The array shone brightly, and the cracks closed and disappeared as quickly as wounds healed.
Everything returned to calm, with only the gradually fading rune marks on the ground serving as proof of what had just happened.
"It seems that although the names are the same, the actual forms are still different. It's not time for you to come out yet," Wu Heng thought to himself.
He stood up, dusted the sulfur ash off his hands, as if he had just completed a routine task.
Then he took things out of his personal storage space.
One after another.
There were a dozen or so metal devices of different sizes but with a unified style.
The base is heavy, the outer shell is made of corrosion-resistant dark alloy, and the surface has large pipes and valve interfaces. In the center is a pressurization chamber similar to a boiler, and the chamber is inlaid with energy storage crystals treated with balancing forces. These things look like steam engines from the Industrial Revolution, yet they flow with extraordinary energy light paths.
They are all compensatory machines, but they lack the sophistication of the one previously thrown into the abyss.
Wu Heng carried the first device, walked to a spot 7 meters east of the hill, placed it on a relatively flat ground, turned on the seven valves on the base, adjusted the angle of the upper array, and then pressed the start button.
"Buzz. Crack. Boom."
A deep, rhythmic hum emanated from inside the device, like a giant heart beginning to beat.
Inside the pressurization chamber, a dark red and grayish-white light shone, and the sulfurous ground around the device turned gray and lost its energy luster at a visible speed, as it drew in chaotic energy from the hellish environment.
Wu Heng didn't stop, and headed to the next designated point to install the second and third units.
At that moment, he was like a farmer setting up an irrigation system in the wilderness, patient and methodical.
The placement of each engine was precisely calculated, and their energy fields subtly resonated with each other, ultimately connecting this hilly area into an invisible, slowly operating, and vast system.
In the distance, the demonic tide was still surging, but it dared not approach the area where a dozen or so 'metal hearts' had suddenly appeared.
Further away, the observers of Heaven and Hell could only sense that Wu Heng was constantly setting up some kind of equipment, but they were unable to detect the details due to the energy interference field that was gradually forming in that area.
They felt uneasy, yet also took it for granted.
When faced with such a desperate situation, setting up defenses and attempting to establish a foothold are things that any capable prisoner would do.
What they didn't know was that the vast majority of the energy drawn by these 'engines' was not used for defense, but rather flowed through the hidden underground runic lines to the center of the now-vanished summoning array on the leeward side of the hill, where a deeper connection was quietly being established.
Wu Heng finished setting up the last device and looked up at the night sky, which resembled an eternal hell.
“The stage is set,” he murmured to himself. “Now it’s time for the actors to take the stage.”
Those guys on the periphery seemed to think they had the cat in the bag, so they continued to probe, looking for a suitable opportunity.
This, in turn, caused them to miss the best opportunity.
Wu Heng raised the balance glove he was wearing on his right hand.
Around the bone hill, a grayish-white balancing force emanated from the glove, spreading outwards like a thick fog, forming a semi-transparent barrier.
Wu Heng stood in the center of the barrier, the glove on his right hand emitting an unprecedentedly intense light.
“It seems he’s trying to escape with his gloves on. Let’s go and distract him,” the angel commander exclaimed excitedly.
Outside the barrier, six four-winged angels and a three-headed demon appeared in an instant, hovering in mid-air and launching their attack.
Holy spears, hellfireballs, and corrupting curses rained down on the balance barrier, but only caused ripples.
With the continuous attacks, the balance of power fluctuates constantly.
Half an hour later.
"His power is overloaded!" An angel's eyes flashed with excitement. "The strength of the barrier is fluctuating violently. Lord Raphael is right. Maintaining this level of balance for too long is causing the glove's backlash to accumulate!"
A monstrous demon with bone spurs on its back and a head resembling a goat let out a hoarse laugh: "When he can't hold on any longer, I'll personally tear off that arm of his that's wearing the treasure."
Wu Heng stood with his back to them, his movements appearing somewhat sluggish. The light from his gloves would occasionally dim abruptly for a moment before forcibly brightening again, all of which was observed by the observers outside. (End of Chapter)
