Chapter 1291 Purpose
"You think what you've said will make me feel validated? Sorry, I'm human."
The basilisk opened its mouth as if to say something, but in the end only made a series of gurgling sounds like bubbles bursting.
Her body began to disintegrate, her skin peeled away, revealing the true form of a reptile, and finally she turned to ashes.
Silence returned to the cave.
Sam calmly ejected the spent cartridge and reloaded; he was no longer the naive college student he once was.
“The mother of all things,” he repeated the word. “It sounds like a lot of trouble; these days, all sorts of monsters and demons are coming out.”
Dean wiped the dirt off the broken sword and sheathed it. He looked into the depths of the cave, as if he could see the mountains to the southwest through the rock strata.
“Go back and report first,” he said. “But this matter is not over.”
The two turned and left the cave, leaving the flames, ashes, and secret behind.
The night sky was filled with low-hanging clouds, as if something enormous was slowly moving behind them, casting an invisible shadow.
The front lines of Hell's Gate, the Tentacle Throne.
Wu Heng tapped his fingers on the armrest.
Dean and Sam's report came through the communicator, with the sound of sirens in the background.
"After investigation, we've discovered that it's a being called the Mother of All Things who's summoning monsters." Sam's voice was tense. "The reason is said to be that someone is capturing those old monsters and using their blood."
"This matter may involve the dark forces of evil, and no connection with Heaven has been found so far."
Wu Heng didn't speak immediately.
A screen of light floated in the air in front of him, displaying various data scrolling across it. After a while, he said, "Crowley."
"That King of Hell?" Dean asked, "one of Lucifer's men?"
“It used to be.” Wu Heng pulled up another set of images. “He wanted to open the gates of purgatory.”
Three things appeared on the light screen: a broken stone slab, a bottle filled with gold dust, and a piece of bone.
“These are all things left behind by those monster progenitors,” Wu Heng said. “Three bones, corresponding to three old monsters. It seems he has found some clues, but he has also attracted trouble.”
Dean swore.
Wu Heng began issuing orders: "'Internet Addiction', investigate all the places where the old monsters have disappeared, see where the energy is going. Bobby, strengthen the defenses of all strongholds, the monsters are about to riot, you two."
He looked at Dean and Sam: "Go find out where Crowley was last seen. There are clues in the Basilisk's memories."
Communication was lost.
In the real world, half a day later.
Bobby stood in the command post, his tablet constantly beeping with alarms. He yelled into the communicator, "Sector Seven, respond!"
There were only gunshots and screams over there.
Then a woman's voice gasped, "We're still holding out, but we're running out of ammunition. Requesting permission..."
Immediately following was the sound of an explosion and a busy signal.
Bobby slammed his fist on the table and changed the channel: "Where's the plane?!"
"We can't get through!" the pilot shouted. "Something that's spewing corrosive substances is coming out of the ground and shooting down both of our helicopters!"
Bobby looked at the map. There were more than twenty red dots on it, one of which had just disappeared. He clicked on the last transmitted image.
The town streets were teeming with monsters.
Six witchers fired from behind the barricades; when a bullet hit a monster, it would explode in a white light and collapse.
But there are too many monsters.
One person was tackled and had his throat bitten through, while the other's head was smashed.
In the final thirty seconds, the captain yelled into the camera: "These monsters were lured here, something is controlling them!"
Then a giant worm crawled out from underground and swallowed him and the rest of the people whole.
The screen went black. Bobby closed his eyes briefly, and when he opened them again, there was no emotion in them.
He pulled up the resource list and began issuing orders: "All the remaining operational strongholds, allocate half of their ammunition to the ones most in dire need, abandon the outer perimeter, and everyone retreat inside the barrier."
"Tell the guild command center that we can't hold out any longer and request to use the 'purification protocol' to flatten the already hopeless areas."
The order was passed down.
No one spoke, only the sound of keyboards clicking and distant explosions.
Another half day passed, deep in the Rocky Mountains.
Dean and Sam are climbing a mountain that has no name.
The mountain's cliffs are very steep, and the fog lingers.
They didn't need ropes; Dean's fingertips gleamed as he dug into the cracks in the stone; Sam moved abnormally fast, traversing the almost vertical wall.
An hour later, they found a hole.
The opening looked like the air was distorted in the heat, but Dean's eyes could see through it; the surface was an illusion.
“Right here.” Dean drew his exorcism blade, its surface gleaming faintly.
Sam checked the gun: "Let's go in together."
The two stepped inside.
The illusion spread out like ripples on water, revealing a man-made tunnel with smooth walls covered in writing. The air smelled of sulfur, old books, and blood.
The passageway went down, completely dark, with no lighting whatsoever.
However, this did not obstruct their view of each other.
They didn't speak, they just walked forward. Dean's eyes were clear even in the darkness, and Sam sensed that the energy around them was too still, unnaturally still.
After walking about two hundred meters, the passageway widened and turned into a large round hall.
In the middle of the hall was a stone platform, on which were placed three things: a broken stone slab, a bottle of gold powder, and a bone fragment.
There were six pillars standing around, each with a desiccated corpse tied to it. Judging from their shapes, they were not human, but old monsters, all of whom had been drained of their life force.
“Looks like we’re too late.” Sam crouched down and touched the ground. “The ritual’s over, and the power in our bones has been taken away.”
Dean walked toward the stone platform and reached out to touch the stone slab.
A gunshot rang out immediately afterward.
Dean lunged to the side, the bullet grazing his face before striking a pillar behind him and exploding in a flash of gold. He looked up in the direction the bullet had come from and froze.
There was a person standing at the entrance of the cave.
He was around seventy years old, with gray hair, a thin face, wearing old hunting clothes, and holding a double-barreled shotgun with smoke coming out of the muzzle.
Dean recognized the face; he had seen it in photographs and heard about it in his father's memories.
Samuel Campbell was his maternal grandfather.
“Leave the stone tablet,” Samuel said, his voice flat as a machine, “or die.”
Dean stood up, his exorcism dagger hanging down.
He looked into Samuel's eyes, trying to find something familiar, but there was nothing. Samuel's eyes were like glass beads, with a dark red light shimmering deep within the pupils.
“Grandfather?!” Dean’s throat went dry. “It’s me, Dean, John’s son.”
“I know,” Samuel interrupted him, the gun pointed steadily at Dean’s chest, “but I only care about my daughter. The Winchester family has nothing to do with me.”
Sam moved next to Dean and whispered, "Something's wrong with him."
Dean looked over and saw a ring of dark red runes around Samuel's neck, like a tattoo, which glowed slightly with his breathing.
“You’re affected, but we can help you break free,” Sam said to Samuel, his voice lowered. “Only if you trust us first, put down your gun, and we…” (End of Chapter)
