Chapter 1296 The Rampant Hybrid
It was obvious that Wu Heng knew they were driving too slowly, so he had the butler bring the boat over to give them a ride.
Meanwhile, out of sight of them, the city of Grantspass had descended into chaos.
On the streets, hybrid monsters transformed by Eve are spreading like a virus.
Police sirens blared everywhere, but gunshots rang out even more.
In the city center, Eve stood on the roof of a building, looking down.
Behind her stood dozens of 'new children,' all elites she had personally transformed. Some were hybrids of ghouls and werewolves, others were crossbreeds of vampires and shapeshifters. Each of them had a ferocious appearance, but their eyes were gentle and devout when they looked at her.
“Not enough,” Eve said softly. “We need more. We need to spread at least a hundred times more before we can welcome the true return.”
The wind blew her golden hair, making it sway and creating a beautiful scene.
She looked up at the sky, and behind the clouds, it seemed as if something enormous was moving.
Crowley, far away in the Rocky Mountains, suddenly felt a pang of heart palpitation.
He stopped, pressed his hand to his chest, and the three hidden bone fragments vibrated simultaneously, emitting a buzzing sound.
"They're here." He recalled the words of the werewolf progenitor, his face grim. "They've really come."
On the front lines of hell, Wu Heng, seated on the tentacle throne, opened his eyes.
His perception transcended dimensions, revealing the dark information spreading through the real world, and also something deeper: the engine hidden within purgatory was emitting a signal, indicating that the seal of purgatory was loosening.
"Time is running out," he muttered to himself, then connected to all the Witcher channels. "All personnel on alert, the battle is about to begin again."
The land in western Texas is relatively dry.
Dean stared at the seemingly endless road ahead, while Sam flipped through the printed documents sent by Gwen.
The Grim Reaper's butler dropped them off nearby and then left; the rest was up to them to investigate.
"Connorfen Ranch, the owner is Ben Colt, 62 years old, has been running the ranch for 40 years, his wife died early, and his two sons work in other places. The information shows that his financial situation is not very good, and he mortgaged part of the land last year," Sam read aloud.
“So he’s short of money,” Dean said. “If he’s short of money, that makes things easier.”
Sam glanced at him. "We're going to buy something, but we can't let ourselves be ripped off."
“I know,” Dean grinned, “but if he won’t sell, we’ll probably have to consider other options.”
Two hours later, they turned off the main road and the taxi entered a dusty dirt road.
In the distance, you can see fences, windmills, and an old white house.
A man with gray hair and a cowboy hat was sitting on the porch in front of the house, repairing a saddle.
The car was parked in the yard. The two people got out, paid the fare, and asked the driver to leave.
Ben raised his head, squinted at them for a moment, then lowered his head to continue his work.
“Mr. Colt?” Sam stepped forward.
“If you’re trying to sell something, get out of here now.” Ben didn’t even look up. “Otherwise, I’ll show you what a shotgun is.”
“It’s not a sales pitch,” Dean said, walking over as well. “We’d like to buy something.”
When he heard that they were buying something, Ben stopped what he was doing, looked up at them, his face was tanned dark red by the sun, his wrinkles were deep, but his eyes were sharp.
"I sell cattle and horses here, nothing else."
“An old thing,” Sam said. “It’s probably been passed down in your family for a long time, a lead box filled with something that looks like ash.”
Ben's expression changed.
He slowly put down his tools, stood up, and was about the same height as Dean, but thinner, like an old log. "Who are you? What are you doing here?"
“The Witcher,” Dean said directly, “that ashes can save many people.”
"I don't want to save anyone." He seemed to be very averse to witchers.
“What if it involves the whole world, including your ranch?” Ben stared at them for a long time, then turned and walked into the house.
"Come in."
The room was dark, and the furniture was old but clean.
Ben led them to the fireplace, took an iron box from the shelf, opened it, and inside was an even smaller lead box, about the size of a palm, its surface oxidized and darkened.
He opened the lead box, which contained half a box of grayish-white powder that looked no different from ordinary ash. But upon closer inspection, each grain of powder was faintly glowing, as if tiny sparks were smoldering inside.
“It was left to me by my great-great-grandfather,” Ben said. “It’s said that this thing is very important, but it doesn’t say what it’s used for. My father tried to burn it, but it wouldn’t burn; he tried to splash water on it, but it wouldn’t get wet, so it’s been in the box ever since.”
“We’re going to buy it,” Dean said.
Ben closed the box and shook his head. "Not for sale, it's an heirloom."
“Ten thousand dollars,” Dean said.
Ben paused for a moment, but quickly shook his head.
"Twenty thousand."
Ben tapped his fingers on the box.
“Fifty thousand,” Dean said. “Cash, I can give it to you right now.”
Ben's Adam's apple bobbed.
He glanced out the window; the pasture was deserted, the grass wasn't growing well, and the windmill was broken and hadn't been repaired.
"What do you want this thing for?"
“Kill a very, very old monster,” Sam said. “An immortal monster.”
Ben remained silent for a long time before finally placing the lead box on the table: "I was originally going to just give it to you guys, but you insisted on asking for $1. Fine, I really do need the money."
"Well then, I also have a diary, I'll give it to you both."
"journal?"
“Samuel Colt’s Diary.” Ben went into the inner room, rummaged around for a while, and took out a notebook wrapped in oilcloth.
“It’s not just the part about hunting the phoenix, but also his experience in making guns, as well as notes on methods for dealing with various monsters. My grandfather said that this should have been passed down, but in our family…” He smiled bitterly, “no one was willing to do these things.”
Dean and Sam exchanged a glance. "Deal."
Ben took the cash Dean offered, his fingers trembling slightly, and pushed the lead box and diary towards him.
"Take it. I hope you can actually use it. No returns, because this money has to be used up by tomorrow."
"Don't worry," Dean reassured the old man. Now that he had Wu Heng's Witcher Guild backing him, he wasn't short of money at all, unlike in the storyline.
A few monster materials can be exchanged for a large amount of money in the guild.
After leaving in a rideshare, Dean opened the lead box, touched the ash with his finger, and felt its warmth, like freshly extinguished charcoal.
"Does it really work?"
"That's what the record says, we'll just have to give it a try." Sam flipped through the diary. "There's also a recipe in there: mix the ash into a special solvent, apply it to weapons, or make bullets."
“Let’s do it.” Dean started the car. “Back to the nearest safe house.”
At the same time, in Grantspass, the city no longer resembled a city.
The streets were littered with burning vehicles, shattered shop windows, and dark stains splattered on the walls. Pedestrians had vanished, replaced by roaming monsters.
They are no longer simply cannibals or werewolves.
These hybrids have human upper bodies and insect arthropod lower bodies; some have eyes all over their faces and arms that can extend into tentacles; and some are covered in scales and can spray acid from their mouths.
They didn't attack each other; instead, they patrolled the streets like an organized group, searching for something. (End of Chapter)
