Chapter 1347 The Disappearance of the Soul
These two powerful souls let out a silent roar, the sound waves of which were enough to shatter the souls of mortals, but in this completely enclosed space, the roar could only echo in their own consciousness.
Wu Heng opened his eyes.
Two faint lights, one black and one white, flashed deep within his pupils.
He withdrew his hand.
The puppet spirit's tentacles also retracted at the same time.
Inside the cage, the two points of light had shrunk to only four-fifths of their original size, their light dim and their rotation slow, like candles flickering in the wind.
But they are still alive.
Wu Heng did not completely devour them, as doing so would be too risky and could trigger a backlash from the rules, and it would also be too wasteful. Delicious food should be savored slowly.
He only extracted a sufficient amount, like taking a bucket of water from a reservoir. The reservoir is still there, only the water level has dropped.
And that's enough water.
Enough for him to understand their nature, enough for him to utilize their abilities, enough for him... to impersonate them when needed.
Wu Heng turned around and headed towards the room's exit.
The puppet evil spirit followed behind, its tentacles retracting and reforming into a humanoid outline.
Before stepping out of the room, Wu Heng glanced back at the cage.
The two points of light were still slowly rotating, as if nothing had happened.
But he knew that everything had changed.
Three hours later,
The Witcher Guild, third basement level, armory.
The fluorescent tubes emitted a steady hum, illuminating rows of gun racks, knife racks, and medicine cabinets. The air was filled with a mixture of gun oil, metal, and disinfectant odors.
Dean stood in front of the workbench, wiping the demon hunter knife forged by Grayson with a cotton cloth. The blade was damaged in the previous battle, but the core enchantment was still intact, so it was barely usable.
Sam sat in the chair next to him, loading salt pellets into the shotgun.
He carefully inspected each bullet, the casings engraved with subtle balancing runes, a new development by the guild's technical department, which provided extra damage to supernatural creatures.
Both of them moved mechanically, and no one spoke.
The only sounds were the click of metal clashing, the rustling of cotton cloth rubbing against the blade, and the occasional footsteps coming from the distant corridor.
They are able to sit here because they have already contacted Wu Heng.
Dean was the first to speak.
“Tell me,” he said without looking up, continuing to wipe his knife, “what did Lor’s words mean, ‘Casdio’s soul has completely disappeared’? What does ‘completely disappeared’ mean?”
Sam loaded the last bullet and closed the chamber: "It means exactly what it says. If a soul is torn apart and devoured by Leviathan, it will leave behind remnants and the energy will dissipate. But there are no traces of that at the scene. Lor said it's like... someone packed up his entire soul and took it away."
“Who would do such a thing?” Dean finally looked up, his eyes bloodshot. “The old man who died? But he was there at the time, and if he wanted to take him away, he would have done it on the spot.”
“I don’t know.” Sam leaned the shotgun against the table. “But since Lor said so, it means he detected something; he just didn’t tell us everything.”
Dean sheathed the cleaned knife and took a new weapon from the shelf: a pump-action shotgun with an extended barrel and the guild emblem engraved on the stock.
He inspected the bolt, his movements as practiced as breathing.
"Do you think Castio is still alive?" he asked softly, his voice filled with anticipation.
Sam was silent for a few seconds. “I hope so,” he said, “but I’d rather know where Leviathan is now, and what it’s doing. Lor said it would monitor the reservoir, but that thing has escaped, and who knows what it’ll do!”
The monitor next to the workbench suddenly lit up.
It was a communication request from Wu Heng, and Dean pressed the answer button.
Wu Heng's face appeared on the screen, with the guild laboratory in the background, where various instruments and several closed transparent containers could be seen.
The container contained a pale yellow substance that was constantly wriggling.
"Come to the lab," Wu Heng said calmly. "We've made a discovery."
The laboratory is colder than the armory, not in terms of temperature, but in the unique chill of a sterile environment.
The walls were pure white, the floor was made of non-slip epoxy resin, and the air was filled with a mixture of disinfectant and a faint, sweet, putrid smell.
Wu Heng stood in front of the central laboratory table, wearing gloves and holding a scalpel. On the table was a... thing.
It used to be some kind of small creature, perhaps a mouse or a rabbit, but now its entire body is covered with a pale yellow, translucent membrane.
The outlines of bones and internal organs can be seen under the membrane, but all organs are an abnormal yellow color and are slowly wriggling.
The creature's head was cut open, and inside the cranial cavity was not a brain, but a mass of yellow gel that kept changing shape.
“Leviathan larva.” Wu Heng pointed to the gel with his scalpel. “It was captured at the edge of the reservoir. It has just separated from its mother and has not yet found a human host.”
Dean approached, frowning as he looked at the thing: "It's still alive?"
“By definition, it is ‘alive’.” Wu Heng put down the scalpel and took off his gloves. “It has no vital signs in the traditional sense, no heartbeat, no breathing, no nerve signals, but it can move, it can respond to external stimuli, and it can… get infected.”
He walked to the control panel next to him and pulled up a video recording.
The image shows another transparent container containing a live mouse.
There is a small door on the side of the container. After opening it, a clump of yellow gel about the size of a fingernail slides in.
The gel penetrated rapidly upon contact with the mouse's skin, completely entering the body within seconds.
The mouse froze instantly, convulsed, then its eyes turned pale yellow, and it began to circle in the container, its movements stiff but continuous.
“The infection process is extremely fast,” Wu Heng said. “Once it comes into contact with the skin or mucous membranes, it will complete parasitism within 30 seconds. The infected host will retain most of its original memories and behavioral patterns, but all actions will serve one purpose: to collect resources for Leviathan and find more hosts.”
Sam stared at the screen: "How do I kill it?"
Wu Heng turned off the recording and walked to the other side of the lab bench, where several beakers containing different liquids were placed.
“Conventional physical attacks have limited effectiveness,” he said. “Bullets, knives, and fire—unless they completely destroy the host’s entire body, the Leviathan larva will reassemble in the wreckage and seek another host. But we have discovered two effective methods in our experiments.”
He picked up the first beaker.
It contains a transparent, viscous liquid, like diluted glue.
“Soapy water containing borax,” Wu Heng said. “Borax can react violently with the mucus on Leviathan’s body surface, producing high heat and corrosion. Contact with it is equivalent to a third-degree burn, and it will also prevent the mucus from regenerating.”
He dripped a drop onto the remains of the juvenile on the lab table.
Sizzle!
White smoke billowed up, and the surface of the wreckage instantly turned black and carbonized, as if it had been splashed with concentrated acid. The yellow gel contracted violently, emitting a faint hissing sound, and then became completely necrotic.
“That’s not all.” Wu Heng put down the beaker, picked up the scalpel, and walked to the remains. “Physical separation is also necessary.” (End of Chapter)
