Chapter 1369 Abnormal Signals
“I don’t know how long the crack will last.” Castio looked at the dark red fissure held in place by Lucifer’s cage in the crevice. “There are still many of our people inside.”
"So we can't afford to waste any more time." Dean grinned, patting the bone blade at his waist, a souvenir Benny had given him, brought back from Purgatory. "Go on, little angel, go save your bunch of birdmen brothers."
“Here,” he pointed his thumb toward the crack, “is left to our professional ground forces.”
Castio felt a lump in his throat.
He wanted to say thank you, to say sorry, to say so much, but in the end he just looked at the two of them deeply, his eyes filled with guilt, entrustment, and a trust that needed no words.
"Take care." He nodded solemnly.
“You too.” Sam stepped forward and gave him a tight hug, brief but powerful. “Don’t lose yourself again.”
Castio nodded, then turned and walked toward Elijah without lingering.
Elijah couldn't wait to begin channeling energy. A pale golden halo enveloped the two of them, the air distorted slightly, and the next second, they vanished from the spot as if erased by an eraser.
Dean stared at the spot where they had disappeared and spat out a mouthful of bloody saliva: "Damn it, they never stop."
“He’s always been like this.” Sam pulled up his newly restarted ‘internet addict’ communicator, the screen displaying constantly updated signal data and coordinates. “He’s carrying too much on his shoulders. Let’s go, we still have a lot of work to do.”
Without resting or even treating the festering wounds on their bodies, they simply replenished their ammunition, replaced their borax solution canisters, and headed back towards the entrance of the crevice.
Renault tried to let them rest for a while, but Wu Heng stopped him with a gesture.
“Let them go.” Wu Heng stood in front of the monitor screen, his gaze falling on the two fast-moving green dots representing Dean and Sam. “They are the anchor points. With them there, people going in will feel more at ease.”
A new team of witchers is gathering, larger in number and better equipped.
With the establishment of a temporary network by the first batch of base stations, subsequent actions had a direction.
The mission is clear: to carry more and more powerful base stations and plant them deep within the purgatory like seeds, expanding signal coverage as much as possible and guiding all surviving witchers toward the rift.
Temporary communications station, designated Reef-7, second hour after deployment.
This area is approximately 22 kilometers away from the entrance of the fissure in a straight line.
The terrain is a 'forest' made up of countless huge, translucent tubes, with a dark yellow, viscous liquid flowing inside the tubes, making gurgling sounds.
The air was humid and muggy, with extremely low visibility.
The witchers Kyle and Lina are the guardians of this place.
They had just driven the base station tripod deep into a relatively solid, fleshy spot when the crystal ball lit up with a blue light and began to hum as it started working. The communicator screen lit up, showing a signal strength of 81%.
“This place…” Lina wiped the sticky sweat from her face and looked around warily at the slightly pulsating tubular objects. “It’s even more disgusting than those piles of bones we had before.”
"Stop complaining, keep an eye on things, it's dangerous here." Kyle set up his modified sniper rifle, aiming the muzzle into the depths of the forest.
His internet-addicted communicator suddenly vibrated, and a notification popped up on the side screen: Weak life signal detected, direction 215°, distance approximately 3800m, signal characteristics: residual energy from the fibers of a Witcher uniform.
"Found something!" Kyle whispered. "There might be one of our people 800 meters away!" Lina's spirits lifted. "Can we make contact?"
“The signal is too weak; the communicator can’t connect directly, but the base station can detect residual traces.” Kyle quickly operated the system. “I’m syncing the coordinates to the nearest mobile team; they’re about… three kilometers away.”
The message was sent, and the subsequent wait was extremely agonizing.
The tubular forest was not quiet; strange gurgling sounds came and went, and occasionally one could hear the sound of some heavy object sliding across the slime surface.
The two stood back to back, their fingers on the triggers, their breathing very soft.
Twenty minutes later, a crackling sound came through the communicator, followed by a panting but excited voice: "Reef-7 Guard, this is the 'Spearhead' mobile team. We've found them! All seven are alive, but three are seriously wounded and are approaching. We need medical support guidance!"
Kyle and Lina exchanged a glance, both seeing the relief in each other's eyes.
Kyle immediately relayed the coordinates and information about the wounded back to the command center at the entrance of the rift.
A relatively safe withdrawal route was quickly planned and displayed on their screens.
This is the significance of base station networks; they are not weapons that directly kill the enemy, but rather optical cables that connect lives in the darkness.
Each illuminated base station is like a hole punched in the dark curtain of purgatory, allowing light to pass through and enabling lost people to see each other and find their way home.
Command tent at the entrance to the rift, time: 28 hours into purgatory.
On the huge screen, the originally sparse network of yellow dots has become much denser, and the coverage area has expanded from the initial fifty-kilometer radius to a radius of nearly one hundred kilometers.
The green dots represent known Witcher hunters covered by the base station network, which has increased to more than two hundred and is still slowly increasing.
However, the number of red dots, which represent the detected high-energy purgatory biological reactions, is also increasing.
The red color is particularly concentrated in the outer areas of the signal network, like a shark smelling blood.
Wu Heng stood in front of the screen, his gaze calm.
Reynolds quickly reported from the side: "...The signal spread is starting to slow down, and some edge base stations are reporting rapid energy depletion. It is estimated that they can only sustain this for another ten to fifteen hours before needing to be replenished. In addition, unidentified large-scale energy accumulation has been detected in areas D and G, and the pattern is being analyzed..."
Before the words were even finished, two red dots that had been moving slowly at the edge of the screen suddenly brightened dramatically and their speed increased dramatically, like two shooting stars heading straight towards the entrance of the crack!
Their energy readings instantly exceeded the monitoring threshold, and a piercing alarm blared throughout the tent.
"What is that?!" Renault's expression changed.
“The Abyss Chewers, and… the Dream Weavers.” Wu Heng looked at the energy signature spectrum of the two monsters on the screen, his voice still steady, but his speech was a little faster. “High-level native individuals of Purgatory, usually solitary, with extremely strong domain awareness. The energy fluctuations emitted by the base station network, combined with the aura of a large number of living creatures gathered here, attracted them.”
He turned and walked out of the tent.
The witchers outside had already taken their fighting positions, the sound of weapons being cocked echoing, instantly bringing the atmosphere to a fever pitch.
The dark red fog in the distance was violently torn apart.
The first to appear was the Abyss Chewer. (End of Chapter)
