Chapter 1372 Fierce Battle
The sounds of metal clashing, the buzzing of runes activating, and the screeching of heavy supply crates dragging across the ground.
Having just arrived from reality through a stable passage and not yet having experienced the battles of Purgatory, the Witcher was still somewhat bewildered, but at the shouts of the veterans, he immediately sprang into action.
Benny walked to the front and sniffed the air.
“The smell of the Corruptor.” He frowned. “And something else… a deeper stench, over here.”
He didn't wait for a response and started walking away.
Sam gestured, and the fifty men, like a silent gray stream, disappeared into the distorted landscape outside the camp.
Dean, with the rest of his men, watched them disappear, spat, and grabbed a heavy bone blade that had just been brought from the human world. It was forged from the entire spine of some kind of large infernal creature and was twice as thick as his previous one.
He walked to the fortifications of the base station and tapped the newly embedded rune plate with the tip of his knife.
"Is it bright or not?" he asked.
The young witcher in charge of the installation wiped the sweat from his brow: "It lights up as soon as it's connected to a power source, but keeping it on now is too energy-intensive."
"Open it now!" Dean interrupted him. "It'll be too late if you wait until you can see the monster. All outer runes, 30% power, keep them constantly lit. I'll take responsibility if they run out of energy!"
The order was passed down.
A few minutes later, pale golden holy light runes lit up one by one on the outermost ring of fortifications. They weren't dazzling, but against the eternal dark red background of purgatory, they looked like a stubborn and warm campfire.
Some low-level infernal creatures that were wandering nearby were stung by the light, let out a hiss, and retreated a little.
Dean nodded in satisfaction and climbed back to his lookout post.
He picked up the binoculars, but could see nothing but fog, so he put them down and touched the communicator at his waist.
"Old Lei," he muttered to himself, "hang in there."
Purgatory, deep within the Pipe Forest.
The shortcut Benny was referring to involved traveling inside a huge tubular structure with a diameter of over five meters.
The tube walls are translucent fleshy, through which you can see dark yellow mucus flowing, and it makes a gurgling sound.
The air inside was stuffy and foul, the ground was slippery, and there were secretions and the remains of unknown small insects everywhere.
But there were indeed no direct attacks from monsters.
“These tubes are the ‘blood vessels’ of Purgatory,” Benny said, walking at the front, his voice echoing in the enclosed space. “Most territorial creatures would avoid them unless they were starving, but the Corruptors don’t care. They are like living strong acid, and this environment is a swimming pool for them.”
As if to verify his words, just as the team rounded a bend, the pipe wall in front of them suddenly bulged violently and then burst with a 'poof'!
A thick, yellowish-green acidic liquid, emitting pungent white smoke, gushed in, followed by three humanoid creatures squeezing in.
"The Infernal Corruptor!"
Sam had seen pictures in the materials, but the actual product was even more disgusting.
They are about two meters tall, covered with a translucent gelatinous layer that drips mucus constantly. They have no facial features, only a slit that occupies most of their face, inside which are layers of bone structure that look like files.
Its limbs are long and thin, with sharp claws at the ends. With each step it takes, it leaves sizzling, corrosive marks on the fleshy tube walls.
"Fire!" Sam commanded, dodging a stream of acid as he dodged.
Borax bullets struck the corrosive, exploding into clusters of pale sparks.
It works, but it's not enough.
The sticky substance seemed to buffer and dilute the purifying effect of borax, only repelling it and making it unlikely to be fatal.
A Corruptor charged into the middle of the group amidst a hail of bullets. Two Witchers, unable to dodge in time, were splashed with acid onto their arms. Their tactical suits instantly began to smoke and melt, the skin beneath emitting a horrifying sizzling sound. The two screamed as they collapsed to the ground. Those nearby quickly dragged them back and sprayed them with emergency neutralizer.
Benny moved.
He didn't use a gun; he just charged forward.
The vampire's speed was maximized in the confined space. He dodged a spray of acid and moved in front of the corrosive creature at the very front.
With both hands outstretched, their fingernails instantly turned jet black and sharp, like ten short knives, plunging deep into the gelatinous layer of the corrosive's chest.
The Corruptor emitted a high-pitched hiss, and something beneath the gelatinous layer was writhing wildly.
Benny tore it outwards with all his might!
"Hey!"
The gelatinous layer was torn open, revealing a pulsating, dark yellow core tumor inside. Benny opened his mouth and bit down without hesitation!
However, he underestimated the corrosiveness of the slime inside the Corruptor's body.
The moment he bit into the core, a large amount of highly concentrated acid gushed out from the breach, splashing onto his left arm and half of his face.
"Hiss—!" Benny let out a suppressed gasp and suddenly pulled back. His left arm was instantly torn open, emitting white smoke, and large burns appeared on his face, leaving it a bloody mess.
But with its core destroyed, the Corruptor's entire body went limp like a deflated balloon, quickly melting into a puddle of bubbling yellow pus.
"Benny!" Sam rushed over, already holding the neutralizing spray.
"Don't worry about me, I'm resilient!" Benny pushed his hand away, his voice hoarse from the pain. "There are two more. Blow them apart with bombs, don't let them clump together!"
Sam breathed a sigh of relief and turned around, saying, "Demolition team, plan three, blast open the passage, everyone else focus fire on the one on the left!"
The well-trained witchers immediately carried out the task.
Two high-explosive borax grenades rolled forward and exploded between the two corrosive beings, using the shockwave and borax dust to create chaos and isolation.
The blast wave blew the corrosive creatures away, and pale borax dust filled the air, temporarily suppressing their acid secretion.
Take this opportunity to concentrate your firepower on the one on the left.
Bullets, enchanted crossbow bolts, and even holy grenades were thrown. Although their effects were weakened by the environment, the continuous attacks finally broke through its defenses. Borax eroded into its core, completely purifying it.
The last Corruptor tried to escape, but its escape route was blocked.
Under the concentrated fire of more than a dozen guns, it quickly turned into a pool of acid that gradually stopped moving.
The battle ended in less than two minutes, but it came at a price.
Benny's left arm was severely injured, with the muscles corroded to the bone, and he was left with terrible scars on his face.
"Can you still walk?" Sam asked the two of them.
Benny moved his bandaged arm: "It's nothing serious, it'll be fine in a bit."
The other witcher nodded in agreement. He had a protective suit, so the cleaning was thorough, though his skin was damaged.
Sam continued forward, waving for the group to catch up.
The Witcher Guild, Command Center.
On the screen in front of Wu Heng, the curve representing the stability of the crack began to decline again: 78%, 77%, 76.5%...
"The disturbance inside the cage is intensifying!" Eileen's voice was tense. "Lucifer and Michael are forming a brief resonance of power. Although it's weak, each resonance impacts the cage's structure!" (End of Chapter)
