Chapter 1383 Bar
“We’re waiting for the target to appear, and at the same time, we’re waiting for the ‘supplier.’” Metatron took a sip of his drink, his gaze slowly scanning the crowd like a scanner. “Based on the information I’ve gathered and some intuition, tonight here, a specific mortal’s mental vulnerability will reach its maximum, making it perfect for being struck by Cupid’s arrow.”
“Cupid, or one of his agents, will not miss this opportunity. Our target is the chosen one named Dwight. We need to intercept Cupid before or immediately after the arrow is shot and seize the bow and arrow.”
"No need... to hurt that person or Cupid?" Castio asked again, the tension in his heart easing a little.
“Theoretically, no.” Metatron gave him a reassuring look. “Our goal is a tool, not a life. We just need to subdue it, disarm it, and leave. I will try to keep a low profile, after all, this is just acquisition, not execution.”
Castio nodded and sat up a little straighter.
He began to observe the people in the bar, just like Metatron did.
His gaze swept over the faces of those laughing, flirting, drinking, and spacing out, trying to find the man named Dwight, and perhaps the Cupid hiding somewhere.
Time passed slowly amidst the noisy music and the pervasive smoke.
Castio saw a middle-aged man in a plaid shirt, with slightly balding hair, drinking beer alone at the bar. His eyes kept drifting to a group of young men and women not far away, filled with longing and timidity.
Is it that person? He wondered.
Then I saw a well-dressed but lonely-looking young woman sitting in the corner.
A nearly untouched cocktail sat before her, and she stared at her phone, seemingly waiting for a message that would never come.
The real world seems to be filled with such loneliness and longing.
These fragile emotional fluctuations, in Castio's now sensitive perception, flickered like faint fireflies in the darkness, constantly flashing.
"Watch out!" Metatron suddenly whispered, his gaze fixed on the bar entrance.
A man walked in.
He looks... ordinary.
He was around thirty years old, wearing a cheap polo shirt and jeans, with messy hair and an unremarkable appearance—the kind of person who would disappear into a crowd immediately.
His face showed restraint and hesitation, and his eyes looked somewhat lost and bewildered in the noisy bar.
He stood at the door for a few seconds, then, as if he had made up his mind, walked to the bar, sat down not far from the middle-aged man in the plaid shirt, and ordered a beer.
“Dwight,” Metatron confirmed. “An ordinary accountant who has just gone through a terrible breakup, is insecure, desperately wants to socialize but is also afraid of getting hurt—a perfect target.”
Castio looked at the man named Dwight.
His knuckles turned white as he gripped the beer glass. He took a sip and then stiffly tried to strike up a conversation with the middle-aged man next to him, but the man only nodded perfunctorily.
Dwight's disappointment and embarrassment were obvious.
Just then, a discordant, extremely subtle ripple appeared in the chaotic flow of emotions that filled the bar.
It was neither sound nor light, but an energy fluctuation that was almost playful, with a sweet and seductive frequency.
It was very well hidden, almost blending into the bar's own hormonal and alcoholic atmosphere, but it did not escape Metatron's conscious search, and even caught the attention of Castio.
The fluctuation is coming from... the shadow of the ceiling?
Do not,
He's more like a elusive figure moving through the crowd. "He's here." Metatron put down his glass and leaned forward slightly. "Cupid, or rather, some manifestation of him, loves games and drama. He strikes at the most opportune moment."
They waited.
Dwight took a few more sips of beer, seemingly mustering his courage, and left the bar, walking to the edge of the dance floor. He awkwardly swayed to the music, but his gaze involuntarily drifted to a red-haired woman sitting alone at the other end of the bar, flipping through a magazine.
His desire and his fear had almost materialized in Castio's eyes.
That mischievous fluctuation became active and began to gather in Dwight's direction.
“Get ready,” Metatron suddenly said.
His hands were seemingly placed casually under the table, but Castio sensed a subtle energy gathering at his fingertips.
Suddenly, the air above the rotating colored lights above the dance floor distorted slightly.
A figure appeared briefly, not the chubby baby of legend, but a teenager with a face so exquisite it was almost unreal. He had curly blond hair, strange violet eyes, and behind him were a pair of almost transparent, shimmering butterfly wings.
With a mischievous smile on his face, he held a small, exquisite bow in his hand, which seemed to be made of pink crystal and golden vines, and a quiver hung at his waist, containing several heart-shaped light arrows.
He appeared quickly and disappeared just as quickly, like an illusion.
But both Castillo and Metatron caught it.
Cupid hovered diagonally above Dwight's head, completely undetectable to ordinary people.
He licked his lips, like a child choosing the most delicious candy, and pulled a luminous arrow from his quiver, nocking it on the bowstring.
The arrow was aimed at Dwight below, the bowstring was slowly drawn back, and the light arrow began to gather a dazzling pink and gold interwoven energy.
It's now!
Metatron slammed his hands together under the table!
An invisible, heavy, silent force field instantly spread out from him, precisely covering an area with a radius of about five meters centered on Dwight and Cupid's location.
The music and voices in the bar suddenly became extremely distant and indistinct within this small area, as if separated by a thick layer of glass.
Several people who were chatting and laughing in the area suddenly stopped, their eyes glazing over as if they had been put on pause.
Cupid's bow movement froze!
His mischievous smile froze, turning into astonishment. His violet eyes snapped towards Metatron and Castio, clearly not expecting anyone to be able to interfere with him or even see through his concealment.
"Attack! Seize the bow!" Metatron shouted, and he shot out of the booth like an arrow.
Castillo followed closely behind.
The two moved with incredible speed, instantly passing through the crowd whose movements were slowed by the field of silence, and pounced on Cupid!
Cupid was quick to react as well.
The shock lasted only a moment. He immediately abandoned shooting at Dwight, turned the bowstring around, and the fully charged pink-gold arrow shot towards Metatron, who was charging ahead!
The arrow, a pure condensation of energy, hurtled forth with an intense aura of 'adoration' and 'desire'. If struck, it would likely instantly instill an irresistible infatuation in the caster. (End of Chapter)
